The study was conducted as additional services to our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Vail Recreation District dated March 12, 2010. The data obtained and our recommendations based on the subsurface conditions encountered are presented in this report. We previously performed a subsoil study for grading of the 7'Tee Box and presented our findings in a report dated March 30, 2010, Job No. 110 052A. Proposed Construction: The proposed stabilization consists of a two or three tier stacked boulder slope with a total height between roughly 10 to 15 feet. The stream bank stabilization will be about 100 feet in length and located below the cart path. The site is shown on Figure 1. The final effective slope is proposed to be roughly 2 horizontal to 1 vertical with temporary cuts of 1(h) to 1(v) for construction of each tier. Cut depths are expected to range between about 2 to 6 feet. Transition slopes to the ends of the stacked boulders will be graded at 3 horizontal to 1 vertical. The on-site alluvial soils are proposed as backfill behind the stacked boulders where needed. The existing cart path is II proposed to remain in place. If construction conditions are significantly different from those described above, we should be notified to re-evaluate the recommendations presented in this report. Site Conditions: The 7Th Tee Box is located on the south side of Gore Creek and north of Vail Valley Drive. The cart path is located below the tee box near the top of the stream bank. Vegetation along the river bank consists of scattered evergreen trees, brush, grass and weeds. The ground surface slopes steeply down from the cart path to Gore Creek. Several layers of sand bags have been placed along the river bank at the proposed stabilization area in an effort to limit stream bank erosion. Parker 303-841-7119 • Colorado Springs 719-633-5562 • Silverthorne 970-468-1989 - 2 - Subsurface Conditions: The subsurface conditions at the proposed stabilization area were evaluated by drilling one exploratory boring at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The log of the boring is presented on Figure 2. The subsoils encountered, below about 2%z feet of man-placed fill, consist of 2%z feet of loose silty sand overlying medium dense to dense, silty sandy gravel with cobbles. Results of gradation analyses performed on samples ofthe sand and gravel (minus 1 1/2 inch fraction) obtained from the boring are presented on Figure 4. Free water was observed in the boring at a depth of 7 feet at the time of drilling. The upper soils were generally moist. The natural soils encountered at the 7'Tee Box consisted of silty sandy gravel similar to the gravel soils encountered in the boring for the current study. Conclusions and Recommendations: The natural gravel soils encountered in the exploratory boring at a depth of 5 feet should be adequate to support the stacked boulder slope. The existing fill, silty sand and loose disturbed soils encountered at the bearing level within the excavation should be removed to provide bearing on the undisturbed natural, relatively dense gravel soils. The stability of the natural gravel soils can be based on an assumed moist unit weight of 130 pcf, buoyant unit weight of 80 pcf, internal friction angle of 34° and cohesion of zero. We expect that the dry natural soils can be excavated at a 1 horizontal to 1 vertical temporary slope for placement of boulders. Dewatering and a flatter cut slope will probably be needed below creek level. Backfill should be placed in uniform lifts and compacted to at least 95%of the maximum standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Required backfill can consist of the on-site alluvial soils devoid of vegetation, topsoil and oversized rock. Prior to backfill placement, the subgrade should be carefully prepared by removing all vegetation, topsoil and loose silty sand soils. Structural fill should be benched into slopes that exceed 20% grade. Permanent unretained cut and fill slopes should be graded at 3 horizontal to 1 vertical or flatter and protected against erosion with rip rap or other means. Limitations: This study has been conducted in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices in this area at this time. We make no warranty either express or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon the data obtained from the exploratory boring drilled at the location indicated on Figure 1 and to the depth shown on Figure 2, the proposed type of construction, and our experience in the area. Our findings include interpolation and extrapolation of the subsurface conditions identified at the exploratory boring and variations in the subsurface conditions may not become evident until excavation is performed. If conditions encountered during construction appear different from those described in this report, we should be notified at once so re-evaluation of the recommendations may be made. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use by our client for design purposes. We are not responsible for technical interpretations by others of our information. As the project volves, we should provide continued consultation and field services during construction to review and monitor the implementation of our recommendations, and to verify that the recommendations have been appropriately interpreted. Significant design changes may require additional analysis or modifications to the recommendations Job No.110 052A GecPtech - 3 - presented herein. We recommend on-site observation of excavations and foundation bearing strata and testing of structural fill by a representative of the geotechnical engineer. If you have any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know. Respectfully Submitted, HEPWORT - PAWLAK GEOTECHNICAL, INC. Louis Eller Reviewed by: J'EN pq2 rf,,,r...... ..
