Product Description
Model RFC30, RFC43 and RFC49 Concealed Residen-
tial Sprinklers are fast response residential fusible solder
link automatic sprinklers. Residential sprinklers differ from
standard sprinklers primarily in their response time and
water distribution patterns.
Model RFC30, RFC43 and RFC49 sprinklers discharge
water in a hemispherical pattern below the sprinkler de-
flector. Residential distribution patterns are higher and
generally contain a finer droplet size than standard sprin-
kler patterns.
The combination of speed of operation and high dis-
charge pattern required for residential sprinklers has dem-
onstrated, in fire testing, an ability for controlling residen-
tial fires, and thereby providing significant evacuation time
for occupants.
The RFC30, RFC43 and RFC49 Sprinklers provide the
best form of fire protection by combining an attractive ap-
pearance and ½” (13mm) of cover adjustment for ease of
installation. The small diameter cover plate is easily and
positively attached and blends into the ceiling, concealing
the most dependable fire protection available, an automat-
ic sprinkler system.
The RFC30, RFC43 and RFC49 are UL Listed Residential
Sprinklers to be installed in the residential portions of any
occupancy in accordance with NFPA 13, 13R, & 13D.
The RFC30, RFC43 and RFC49 can reduce the need for
precise cutting of drop nipples. The threaded cover plate
assembly can be adjusted without tools to fit accurately
against the ceiling. The fire protection system need not be
shut down to adjust or remove the cover plate assembly.
Application and Installation
The RFC30, RFC43 and RFC49, for residential installa-
tions, use a 165°F (74°C) fusible solder link in a tuning fork
style sprinkler frame with a drop-down deflector. This as-
sembly is recessed into the ceiling and concealed by a flat
cover plate. The cover plate is attached to the skirt, using
135°F (57°C) ordinary temperature classification solder.
When the ceiling temperature rises, the solder holding
the cover plate releases the cover allowing the deflector
to drop into position and exposing the sprinkler inside to
2.
ceiling temperature. The subsequent operation of the sol-
der link opens the waterway and causes the deflector to
drop into position to distribute the discharging water in a
hemispherical pattern below the sprinkler deflector. Any
adjustment of thread engagement between the cover
plate and cup will assure that the drop-down deflector is
properly located below the ceiling. The residential distri-
bution pattern contains a finer droplet size than a standard
sprinkler, and the pattern produces significantly higher
wall wetting.
After a 25/8 inch diameter hole is cut in the ceiling, the
sprinkler is to be installed with the Model FC Wrench.
When installing a sprinkler, the wrench is first positioned
into the sprinkler/cup assembly and around the hexagonal
body of the sprinkler frame. The Wrench must bottom out
against the cup in order to ensure proper, safe installation.
The sprinkler is then tightened into the pipe fitting. When
inserting or removing the wrench from the sprinkler/cup
assembly, care should be taken to prevent damage to
the sprinkler. DO NOT WRENCH ON ANY OTHER PART
OF THE SPRINKLER/CUP ASSEMBLY. MODEL RFC30,
RFC43 AND RFC49 CONCEALED SPRINKLERS MUST
BE INSTALLED ONLY WITH 135°F RATED COVERS.
Note: A leak tight ½” NPT (R1/2) sprinkler joint can be ob-
tained with a torque of 8-18 ft-lbs (10,8 - 24,4 N-m). Do not
tighten sprinklers over maximum recommended torque. It
may cause leakage or impairment of the sprinklers.
Cover assemblies provide up to 1/2” (13mm) of adjust-
ment. Turn the cover clockwise until the flange is in con-
tact with the ceiling. For the push-on/thread-off option, the
cover assembly is pushed onto the cup and final adjust-
ment is made by turning the cover clockwise until the skirt
flange makes full contact with the ceiling. Cover removal
requires turning in the counter-clockwise direction.
In ceilings that have a plenum space above the sprinkler,
the plenum space may have neutral or negative pressur-
ization but must not be positively pressurized. Inspect all
sprinklers after installation to ensure that the gap between
the cover plate and ceiling and the 4 slots in the cup are
all open and free from any air flow impediment.

Maintenance
Model RFC30, RFC43 and RFC49 Concealed Sprinklers
should be inspected quarterly and the sprinkler system
maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Do not clean
sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any other
cleaning fluids. Remove dust by using a soft brush or gen-
tle vacuuming. Remove any sprinkler cover plate assem-
bly which has been painted (other than factory applied) or
damaged in any way. A stock of spare sprinklers should
be maintained to allow quick replacement of damaged or
operated sprinklers. Prior to installation, sprinklers should
be maintained in the original cartons and packaging until
used to minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers
that would cause improper operation or non-operation.

The 3mm glass-bulb pendent sprinklers permit the effi-
cient use of residential water supplies for sprinkler cover-
age in residential fire protection design.
The low flow F1 Res sprinklers are specially engineered
for fast thermal response to meet the sensitive fire protec-
tion application needs of the latest residential market stan-
dards (UL 1626 Standard). Upon fire conditions, rising
heat causes a sprinkler’s heat-sensitive glass-bulb to shat-
ter, releasing the waterway for water flow onto the deflector,
evenly distributing the discharged water to control a fire.

Maintenance
Model F1 Res 30, 49, F1 Res 58, F1 Res 76 and F1 Res 44
Sprinklers should be inspected quarterly, and the sprinkler sys-
tem maintained in accordance with NFPA 25, 13, 13D, and 13R.
Do not clean sprinkler with soap and water, Ammonia or any oth-
er cleaning fluids. Remove dust by using a soft brush or gentle
vacuuming. Remove any sprinkler which has been painted (oth-
er than factory applied) or damaged in any way. A stock of spare
sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick replacement of
damaged or operated sprinklers. Prior to installation, sprinklers
should remain in the original cartons and packaging until used.
This will minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers that could
cause improper operation or non-operation.

®
Material SpecificationS
Ductile iron threaded fittings are UL & ULC Listed & Factory Mutual Approved for 500 psi service.
Ductile iron per ASTM A536 Class 65-45-2.
Dimensions conform to ASMe B6.3 Class 50.
Threads are NPT per ANSI/ASMe B.20..
Notice: Ductile iron fittings have higher tensile strength than that of steel pipe. Therefore, over tightening can cause damage to pipe threads which may cause leakage. Ductile
iron fittings should be tightened three turns beyond hand tight, but no more than four turns.

The Model VSR-SF is a vane type waterflow switch for use on wet
sprinkler systems that use 1" (25mm), 1 1/4" (32mm), 1 1/2"
(38mm) or 2" (50mm) pipe size. The unit may also be used as
a sectional waterflow detector on large systems.
The unit contains two single pole double throw snap action
switches and an adjustable, instantly recycling pneumatic re-
tard. The switches are actuated when a flow of 8-10 gallons per
minute (30-38 LPM) or more occurs downstream of the device.
The flow condition must exist for a period of time necessary to
overcome the selected retard period.
INSTALLATION: These devices may be mounted in horizontal
or vertical pipe. On horizontal pipe they should be installed on
the top side of the pipe where they will be accessible. The units
should not be installed within 6" (15cm) of a valve, drain or fitting
which changes the direction of the waterflow. Select the proper
paddle for the pipe size and type of TEE used see Fig. 1 for
instructions on changing paddle. The unit has a 1" NPT bushing
for threading into a non-corrosive TEE. See Fig. 2 for proper TEE
size, type and installation. Use no more than three wraps of
teflon tape.
Screw the device into the TEE fitting as shown in Fig. 2. Care
must be taken to properly orient the device for the direction of
waterflow.
The vane must not rub the inside of the TEE or bind in any way.
The stem should move freely when operated by hand.
The device can also be used in copper or plastic pipe installa-
tions with the proper adapters so that the specified TEE fitting
may be installed on the pipe run.
INSPECTION AND TESTING: Check the operation of the unit by
opening the inspector’s test valve at the end of the sprinkler line
or the drain and test connection, if an inspector’s test valve is not
provided.
If there are no provisions for testing the operation of the flow
detection device on the system, application of the VSR-SF is not
recommended or advisable
The frequency of the inspection and testing and its associated
protective monitoring system should be in accordance with the
applicable NFPA Codes and Standards and/or authority having
jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more fre-
quently).

To remove knockouts: Place
screwdriver at edge of knock-
outs, not in the center.
APPLICATION WARNING!
Due to the possibility of unintended discharges caused by pressure surges, trapped air, or short retard times, waterflow switches
that are monitoring wet pipe sprinkler systems should not be used as the sole initiating device to discharge AFFF, deluge, or
chemical suppression systems.
Screw the device into the tee fitting as shown. Care must be taken to
properly orient the device for the direction of waterflow. On sweat tees, no
threaded bushings, inserts, or adapters are permitted, unless they comply
with the dimensions listed in the chart below.

UNIVERSAL BALL
VALVE SWITCH
PAGE 1 OF 2MFG.# 5401086 - REV U

US Patent No. 6,945,509
General
The Model RBVS is designed to monitor the fully open position of a ball valve
installed in a sprinkler system. The unit will fi t on most ball valves installed on
back-fl ow-preventers and alarm trim lines of dry, alarm, and deluge sprinkler
valves. The switch operates if the ball valve handle is moved from the open
position. However, the switch does not track the position of the handle or ball.
When the ball valve handle is in the open position, a spring-loaded switch button
will contact the valve handle. When the handle is moved from the open position,
this switch button extends to the tripped position, and the RBVS contacts change
state, thereby opening or closing a circuit. A cover tamper switch is available and
is activated by the removal of the RBVS housing cover. If an attempt is made
to remove the RBVS by the removal of the mounting brackets, the unit will be
set into the tripped mode by this action.
The RBVS can be mounted to the hex portion of the ball valve or back-fl ow-
preventer or to the adjoining pipe via two clamps. The RBVS is shipped with two
sets of mounting clamps to accommodate various pipe and valve sizes, refer to
Table 1. An "L" shaped and offset bracket for mounting the switch enclosure and
an extension bracket add to the mounting fl exibility of the RBVS. See "Typical
Mounting Diagram" and "Installation and Operation" on following page.
Testing
The RBVS and its associated protective monitoring system should be tested
in accordance with applicable NFPA codes and standards and/or the authority
having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more frequently).

The PS40A is designed as a pressure type supervisory switch.
The NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, requires that a low
pressure signal is sent at 10 psi below normal air pressure and
10 psi above normal pressure on dry pipe valves. Therefore, the
PS40-2A switches are factory set for a pressure decrease at 30
psi and a pressure increase at 50 psi with a normal air pressure
of 40 psi. The switches are adjustable at any point between 10
and 175 psi.
The PS40-1A is intended for applications that are looking for a
specific pressure, either increase or decrease. These
applications would include monitoring city water pressure or
monitoring a water tank pressure.
INSTALLATION AND TEST PROCEDURES
Mounting: The device should be mounted in the upright position
(threaded connection down). Only teflon tape should be applied
to the male threads. Using pipe joint cement or pipe thread
compound (pipe dope) could obstruct the device and cause it
to not work properly.
In outdoor applications, a NEMA type 4 conduit hub should be
installed.
If the pressure needs to be adjusted from the factory settings,
adjust the system pressure to the desired trip point. Use a ohm
meter on the appropriate contacts (COM and NC for pressure
decrease and COM and NO for pressure increase). Adjust the
knurled knob until the meter indicates continuity. At that point the
switch is set for that particular pressure. When the adjustments
are complete, raise and lower the system pressure to ensure
the switch is properly set.
On dry systems, connect the PS40A in the air supply line on the
system side of any shutoff and check valves.
Provisions for testing the unit without affecting the entire system
can be accomplished with the installation of a Potter Bleeder
Valve (Model BVL) in the line to the PS40A.
Testing: The operation of the pressure supervisory switch should
be tested upon completion of installation and periodically there-
after in accordance with the applicable NFPA codes and stan-
dards and/or the authority having jurisdiction (manufacturer
recommends quarterly or more frequently).
CAUTION: Testing the PS40A may activate other system connect-
ed devices.

INSTALLATION AND TEST PROCEDURES
The Potter PS10A Series Pressure Actuated Switches are designed for
the detection of a waterflow condition in automatic fire sprinkler systems
of particular designs such as wet systems with alarm check valves or
dry pipe systems. They may also be used to provide a low pressure
supervisory signal. They may be adjusted to operate on pressure
between 4 and 20 PSI (0,27 and 0,4 BAR).
MOUNTING: Device should be mounted in upright position (threaded
connection down). Requires NEMA type 4 conduit hub for outdoor
installations.
TESTING: The operation of the pressure alarm switch should be tested
upon completion of installation and periodically thereafter in accordance
with the applicable NFPA codes and standards and/or the authority
having jurisdiction (manufacturer recommends quarterly or more fre-
quently).
WET SYSTEM:
METHOD 1: When using PS10A and control unit with retard - connect
PS10A into alarm port piping on the input side of retard chamber and
electrically connect PS10A to control unit that provides a retard to
compensate for surges. Insure that no unsupervised shut-off valves
are present between the alarm check valve and PS10A.
METHOD 2: When using the PS10A for local bell application or with a
control that does not provide a retard feature - the PS10A must be
installed on the alarm outlet side of the retard chamber of the sprinkler
system.
TESTING: Accomplished by opening the inspector's end-of-line test
valve. Allow time to compensate for system or control retard.
CAUTION: Method 2 is not applicable for remote station service use,
if there is an unsupervised shut-off valve between the alarm check
valve and the PS10A.
WET SYSTEM WITH EXCESS PRESSURE:
Connect PS10A into alarm port piping extending from alarm check valve.
Retard provisions are not required. Insure that no unsupervised shut-
off valves are present between the alarm check valve and the PS10A.
TESTING: Accomplished by opening the water by-pass test valve or the
inspector's end-of-line test valve. When using end-of-line test, allow
time for excess pressure to bleed off.
DRY SYSTEM:
Connect PS10A into alarm port piping that extends from the intermediate
chamber of the alarm check valve. Install on the outlet side of the in-line
check valve of the alarm port piping. Insure that no unsupervised shut-
off valves are present between the alarm check valve and the PS10A.
TESTING: Accomplished by opening the water by-pass test valve.
CAUTION: The above tests may also activate any other circuit closer
or water motor gongs that are present on the system.
