Re: Geotechnical Engineering Report
Proposed Cricket Tower Site — DEN-448B Vail Middle Creek
145 N. Frontage Road West
Vail, Colorado
Terracon Project No. 25085182
Dear Ms. Covillo,
Terracon Consultants, Inc. (Terracon) has completed a geotechnical engineering exploration
for the proposed Cricket equipment shelter to be located near the existing building at 145 N.
Frontage Road West in Vail, Colorado. This study was performed in general accordance with
our Master Professional Services Agreement, dated March 15, 2005, amended March 30,
2007. The purpose of these services is to provide geotechnical engineering
recommendations for design of foundations and other earth connected phases of the project.
Proposed Construction: As currently planned, construction on the site will include the
proposed ancillary support equipment shelter with plan dimensions of about 12 by 20 feet.
The proposed ancillary support equipment is in support of antennas that will be mounted on
the roof of the existing building. Foundation loads for the proposed ancillary support
equipment were not available at the time of this study. The ancillary support equipment is
considered to be a lightly loaded slab-on-grade structure.
Scope of Services: The scope of services performed for this project included site
reconnaissance by a field engineer, a subsurface exploration program, laboratory testing and
engineering analyses. One boring was drilled near the approximate location of the proposed
equipment shelter, shown on the attached Boring Location Map, Figure 1.
The boring was drilled with a rotary drill rig with continuous flight solid-stem augers. During
the drilling operations, a lithologic log of the boring was recorded by the field engineer.
Relatively undisturbed samples were obtained at selected intervals utilizing a 3-inch outside
diameter samplers. Disturbed samples were obtained from auger cuttings. Penetration
resistance values were recorded using methods based on the standard penetration test
(SPT). This test consists of driving the sampler into the ground with a 140-pound hammer
free-falling through a distance of 30 inches. The number of blows required to advance the
sampler 12 inches or the interval indicated, is recorded and can be correlated to the standard

penetration resistance value (N-value). The blow count values are indicated on the boring
logs at the respective sample depths, but are not considered N-values. A manual SPT
hammer was used to advance the sampler in the boring performed on this site. A greater
efficiency is typically achieved with the automatic hammer compared to the conventional
safety hammer operated with a cathead and rope.
The standard penetration test provides a reasonable indication of the in-place density of sandy
type materials, but only provides an indication of the relative stiffness of cohesive materials
since the blow count in these soils may be affected by the soils moisture content. In addition,
considerable care should be exercised in interpreting the blow counts in gravelly soils,
particularly where the size of the gravel particle exceeds the inside diameter of the sampler.
A lithologic log of the test boring was recorded by the field engineer during drilling operations.
Groundwater measurements were obtained in the test boring at the time of site exploration.
The boring was immediately backfilled following the completion of drilling operations for safety
considerations. Therefore, a subsequent groundwater measurement was not obtained.
The samples retrieved during the field exploration were returned to the laboratory for
observation by the project geotechnical engineer and were classified in general accordance
with the attached Unified Soil Classification System. At that time, an applicable laboratory-
testing program was formulated to determine engineering properties of the subsurface
materials.
Selected soil samples were tested for the following engineering properties:
• Water content
• Dry density
• Consolidation/Expansion
.
Water soluble sulfate content
Resistivity
pH
Following the completion of the laboratory testing, the field descriptions were confirmed or
modified as necessary, and the Log of Boring was prepared and is attached.
Subsurface Conditions: As presented on the attached Log of Boring, fill materials consisting
of clayey sand with gravel and cobbles were encountered at the ground surface and extended
to a depth of about 8-YZ feet below existing site grade, at which auger refusal conditions were
encountered. Several attempts were made to advance the boring beyond 8-'/2 feet, with no
success. Bedrock was not encountered within the boring to the termination depth.
Field penetration test results indicate that the sand soils were loose to medium dense in
relative density.

Geotechnical Engineering Report Terracon

Vail, Colorado
Terracon Project No. 25085182
Based on our experience, clay soils are generally considered to be low to moderately
expansive and sand soils are generally considered to be non- to low expansive.
Groundwater was not encountered at the time of exploration. Due to safety considerations,
the boring was backfilled with auger cuttings after drilling operations were complete; therefore
subsequent groundwater measurements were not performed. These observations represent
current groundwater conditions only, and may not be indicative of other times, or at other
locations. Groundwater levels can be expected to fluctuate with varying seasonal and weather
conditions.
Equipment Shelter Support:
Drilled Pier Foundation System: Based on the results of the exploration, we
recommend the proposed equipment shelter be supported on a drilled pier foundation
system. Along with this option, a structural floor system is also recommended for the
interior of the equipment shelter. Straight shaft piers with a minimum shaft length of 4 feet
are recommended.
For axial compression loads, piers may be designed for a maximum end-bearing pressure
of 1,500 pounds per square foot (psf. Subsurface parameters for axial compression, uplift
loads and lateral soil response is provided in the Summary of Foundation
Recommendations Table attached to this report. Uplift forces (if any) on piers should be
resisted by a combination of dead load and pier penetration below a depth of 4 feet and in
the bearing strata.
All piers should be reinforced full depth for the applied axial, lateral and uplift stresses
imposed. The amount of reinforcing steel for expansion should be determined by the
tensile force created by the uplift force on each pier, with allowance for dead load.
To reduce potential uplift forces on piers, use of long grade beam spans to increase
individual pier loading and small diameter piers are recommended. For this project, use of
a minimum pier diameter of 12 inches is recommended. A minimum 4-inch or greater void
space should be provided beneath grade beams between piers. The void material should
be of suitable strength to support the weight of fresh concrete used in grade beam
construction and to avoid collapse when foundation backfill is placed.
Free-fall concrete placement in piers will only be acceptable if provisions are taken to
avoid striking the concrete on the sides of the hole or reinforcing steel. The use of a

bottom-dump hopper, or an elephant's trunk discharging near the bottom of the hole
where concrete segregation will be minimized, is recommended.
Pier-bearing surfaces must be cleaned prior to concrete placement. A representative of
the geotechnical engineer should observe the bearing surface and pier configuration.
Shallow Foundation System: As an alternative, the proposed ancillary equipment
structure may be supported on a shallow foundation system. Slab-on-grade construction
bearing on the existing soils is considered feasible. For protection against frost heave, all
exterior foundations should be constructed at a depth of four feet below the ground
surface. If slab on grade construction is desired, it is likely that expansive materials and/or
frost heave action could cause the foundations to move approximately 1 to 2 inches.
Excavations may require the use of specialized heavy-duty equipment, rippers and
pneumatic equipment to facilitate rock break-up and removal.
If some movement can be tolerated and spread footing and/or slab-on-grade foundations
are utilized, an allowable bearing capacity of 1,500 psf is appropriate for the supporting
soils. Any new fill placed for slab support should consist of granular materials and should
be compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of the maximum density defined by ASTM
D1557, at moisture contents within 3 percent of the optimum moisture content. Should
structural loads be concentrated on the perimeter of the slab, a monolithic turn down edge
should be considered. Thickened interior slab sections can be used to support
concentrated or continuous slab loading provided that:
• loads do not exceed 900 plf,
. thickened sections have a minimum width of 12 inches, and
• thickness and reinforcement are consistent with structural requirements.
Foundations and slabs should be reinforced as necessary to reduce the potential for
distress caused by differential foundation movement. Foundation excavations should be
observed by the geotechnical engineer. If the soil conditions encountered differ
significantly from those presented in this report, supplemental recommendations will be
required.
Seismic Considerations: A site classification "D" should be used for the design of structures
for the proposed project (2006 International Building Code, Table No. 1613.5.2).
Corrosion Protection: Laboratory test results as part of this study indicate that on-site soils
have minimum resistivities ranging from 2,950 to 3,550 ohm-centimeters and pH values
ranging from 7.9 to 8.0. These values should be used to determine potential corrosive

characteristics of the on-site soils and bedrock with respect to contact with the various
underground materials, which will be used for project construction.
General Comments: The Geotechnical Engineer should also be retained to provide services
during excavation, grading, foundation and construction phases of the work. Observation of
drilled shaft and foundation excavations should be performed prior to placement of reinforcing
and concrete to confirm that satisfactory bearing materials are present and is considered a
necessary part of continuing geotechnical engineering services for the project. Construction
testing, including field and laboratory evaluation of fill, backfill, pavement materials, concrete
and steel should be performed to determine whether applicable project requirements have
been met. It would be logical for Terracon to provide these additional services for continuing
from design through construction and to determine the consistency of field conditions with
those data used in our analyses.
The analyses and recommendations in this report are based in part upon data obtained from
the field exploration. The nature and extent of variations beyond the location of test borings
may not become evident until construction. If variations then appear evident, it may be
necessary to re-evaluate the recommendations of this report.
We have appreciated being of service to you in the geotechnical engineering phase of this
project, and are prepared to assist you during the construction phases as well. If you have
any questions concerning this report or any of our testing, inspection, design and consulting
services, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,

The number of blows required to advance a standard 2-inch O.D. split-spoon sampler (SS) the last 12 inches of the total 18-inch
penetration with a 140-pound hammer falling 30 inches is considered the "Standard Penetration" or "N-value". For 3" O.D. ring
samplers (RS) the penetration value is reported as the number of blows required to advance the sampler 12 inches using a 140-
pound hammer falling 30 inches, reported as "blows per foot," and is not considered equivalent to the "Standard Penetration" or "N-
value".

Water levels indicated on the boring logs are the levels measured in the borings at the times indicated. Groundwater levels at other
times and other locations across the site could vary. In pervious soils, the indicated levels may reflect the location of groundwater.
In low permeability soils, the accurate determination of groundwater levels may not be possible with only short-term observations.
DESCRIPTIVE SOIL CLASSIFICATION: Soil classification is based on the Unified Classification System. Coarse Grained Soils
have more than 50% of their dry weight retained on a#200 sieve; their principal descriptors are: boulders, cobbles, gravel or sand.
Fine Grained Soils have less than 50% of their dry weight retained on a#200 sieve; they are principally described as clays if they are
plastic, and silts if they are slightly plastic or non-plastic. Major constituents may be added as modifiers and minor constituents may
be added according to the relative proportions based on grain size. In addition to gradation, coarse-grained soils are defined on the
basis of their in-place relative density and fine-grained soils on the basis of their consistency.

REPORT TERMINOLOGY
(Based on ASTM D653)
The recommended maximum contact stress developed at the interface of the foundation
element and the supporting material.
Soil, the constituents of which have been transported in suspension by flowing water and
subsequently deposited by sedimentation.
A layer of specified material placed on a subgrade or subbase usually beneath slabs or
pavements.
A specified material placed and compacted in a confined area.
Bedrock A natural aggregate of mineral grains connected by strong and permanent cohesive forces.
Usually requires drilling, wedging, blasting or other methods of extraordinary force for
excavation.
Bench A horizontal surface in a sloped deposit.
Caisson (Drilled A concrete foundation element cast in a circular excavation which may have an enlarged
Pier or Shaft) base. Sometimes referred to as a cast-in-place pier or drilled shaft.
Coefficient of A constant proportionality factor relating normal stress and the corresponding shear stress
Friction at which sliding starts between the two surfaces.
Colluvium Soil, the constituents of which have been deposited chiefly by gravity such as at the foot of a
slope or cliff.

The densification of a soil by means of inechanical manipulation
A concrete surface layer cast directly upon a base, subbase or subgrade, and typically used
as a floor system.
Unequal settlement or heave between, or within foundation elements of structure.
The pressure exerted by soil on any boundary such as a foundation wall.
Equivalent Single Axle Load, a criteria used to convert traffic to a uniform standard, (18,000
pound axe loads).
Specified material placed and compacted to specified density and/or moisture conditions
under observations of a representative of a geotechnical engineer.
A hypothetical fluid having a unit weight such that it will produce a pressure against a lateral
support presumed to be equivalent to that produced by the actual soil. This simplified
approach is valid only when deformation conditions are such that the pressure increases
linearly with depth and the wall friction is neglected.
Materials deposited throughout the action of man prior to exploration of the site.
The ground surface at the time of field exploration.

The final grade created as a part of the project.
A portion of the foundation of a structure that transmits loads directly to the soil.
The lower part of a structure that transmits the loads to the soil or bedrock.
The depth at which the ground becomes frozen during the winter season.
A foundation element or wall, typically constructed of reinforced concrete, used to span
befinreen other foundation elements such as drilled piers.
Subsurface water found in the zone of saturation of soils or within fractures in bedrock.
Upward movement.
The characteristics which describe the composition and texture of soil and rock by
observation.
The naturally occurring ground surface.
Naturally occurring on-site soil, sometimes referred to as natural soil.
Optimum Moisture The water content at which a soil can be compacted to a maximum dry unit weight by a
Content given compactive effort.
Perched Water Groundwater, usually of limited area maintained above a normal water elevation by the
presence of an intervening relatively impervious continuous stratum.
Scarify

To mechanically loosen soil or break down existing soil structure.
Downward movement.
Skin Friction (Side The frictional resistance developed between soil and an element of the structure such as a
Shear) drilled pier.
