Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Deck Addition to Johnson
Residence, Unit, Lot 14, Block 6, Vail Valley I" Filing,
1195 Hornsilver, Vail, Colorado
Dear Kevin:
As requested by Bob Batten, a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc.
observed the footing pad excavations at the subject site on October 16 and 17, 2012 to
evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and
recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The services
were supplemental to our agreement for professional engineering services to Geor e
Shaeffer Construction, dated September 10, 2012. g
We previously observed the foundation excavation for the caretaker addition at the site
and presented our findings in a report dated September 18, 2012, Job No. 112 309A. The
deck addition will be attached to the east side of the residence and be founded on two
isolated footing pads. The footing pads were designed assuming an allowable soil
bearing pressure of 1,500 psf.
At the time of our October 16 site visit to the site, the foundation excavation for the two
footing pads had each been cut in one level about 4 feet below the adjacent ground
surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of existing fill that
we recommended be removed. By probing in the bottoms of the excavations it appeared
the fill was about 1 to 2 feet deep. On October 17, we observed the excavations after they
had been deepened and the two footing pads were cut from about 5 to 6 feet below the
adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottoms of the excavations consisted of
medium dense, very clayey sand. Results of swell-consolidation testing perfonned on a
sample taken from the site, shown on Figure 1, indicate the soils are slightly to
moderately compressible under conditions of loading and wetting. No free water was
encountered in the excavations and the soils were moist.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavations and the nature of the proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil designed for an
allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf can be used for support of the proposed deck

addition. There could be some differential settlement with respect to the existing
structures which should be considered in the design. Loose and disturbed soils should be
removed in the footing areas to expose the undisturbed natural soils. The footing pads
should be a minimum width of 24 inches. Backfill placed around the footing pads should
be compacted to at least 90% standard proctor density (95% in slab areas) and the surface
graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of tile footings and building. Other
recommendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be
observed.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to
evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This
study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better
support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than
indicated in this report because of Possible variations in the subsurface conditions. It is
possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations
contained ul this letter.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our office.
Sincerely,
HEPWORT AK GEO{FfiliNICAL, INC.
