RE: VAILTRAILSWEST
Dear Charlie:
We would like to replace boiler for unit #6 at Vail Trails West. Rich Broun ofBrorm
Wolin Construction is the general contractor on thisjob (970 949-4186).
The two flues were video taped in 2002 and formd to have gaps in them Rich Broum
found a coryany that will reline flue with a product call thermocrete. I have also enclosed
a letter from Engineered Products Conryany a Wiel Mclain rqrresentative stated that by
relining flue it will still be large enough to accommodate boilers.
I will also add a (fan in a can) to srppleme,nt combustible air.

Multiple boiler systems. Use two or more high-efficiency CGa boilers in place of one large-capacity
boiler to meet the space-heating requirements of larger buildings.
Homeowner Protection PIan. Covers labor and all Weil-McLain supplied parts for 5 or 10 full years.
Available through participating installers.
Design Advantages
Cast lron Sections with Elastomer Sealing Rings
Boiler sections are made of durable cast iron for strength, efficiency and long life.
It's not uncommon for a Weil-McLain cast iron boiler to last 35 years or more.
The heat pins in the vertical flue passages cause the hot gases to swirl about,
covering the entire surface of each section for maximum heat transfer. Radiation
plates further increase heat transfer for maximum efficiency.
Modern elastomer sealing rings in the port openings assure a permanent water-
tight seal. The flexibility and elastic memory of these seals (unlike metal push
nipples) prevent leaks caused by thermal expansion and contraction.
A special high-temperature sealant between boiler sections assures tightness
from gas leakage in the block.
Temperaturc 8[, Pressurc Gauge
All CGa boilers come with a large-faced temperature and pressure
gauge, which installs in a tee in the boiler supply on the top of the
boiler. Every T & P gauge comes with a spring-loaded immersion well
that provides for easy installation and replacement without draining
any water from the boiler or system. By installing the gauge in the
system supply flow, a more accurate reading is provided. Also, the
location of the gauge and the larger face provide for easy monitoring
of boiler temoerature and oressure.
Automatic Vent Damper
A tested and approved automatic vent damper with removable plug
is furnished as standard equipment with the SPDN, SPDL and PIDN
models. The damper prevents heat from escaping up the chimney to
increase efficiency and save fuel when the boiler is not operating. A
simple plug-in wiring harness assures mistake-proof wiring.
Weil-Mclain Control Modu$e
and lgnition Csntrol [PlD only]
The control module has:
. five indicator lights -power, thermostat &
circulator, limit, damper,
and flame - that show
proper operation and
make troubleshooting
easy without complicated
add-on wiring.
. plug-in connectors that
attach only one way to
assure mistake-proof wiring.
The control module responds to signals from the
room thermostat and boiler limit control to oper-
ate the boiler circulator, pilot burner, gas valve,
and damper. The module controls all ignition,
operating and safety-related functions. In add-
ition, its microprocessor continually checks itself
60 times each second. lf a situation such as
electrical "noise" or low voltage is encountered,
the control module restarts and retries, elimin-
ating nuisance lockouts.
And Weil-McLain control module designs assure
newer controls will always fit.
Convenient
Servicing
The front top jacket
panel and front door
are easy to remove
allowing access to
the base assembly,
burners and controls
for servicing.
. . . and by simply
removing the back
half of the top jacket
panel, the collector
hood, radiation
plates, and the
flueways are exposed
for easy cleaning.
Stainless Steel Burners
Stainless steel burners provide fixed primary air
... no air adjustment is required. These burners
are designed to provide exceptional flame
stability with natural gas or propane for quieter
operation, longer life and improved combustion.
CGa-SfD
Standing Filot Control Systern
How the boiler works
When a room thermostat calls
for heat, the circulator starts
and the vent damper begins
to ooen. After about 15
seconds, the vent damper
is oroven and the main
gas valve opens to ignite
the burners.
When the room
thermostat is satisfied,
the circulator stops.
the gas valve closes and
the damper is closed in
approximately 15 seconds.
CGa-PID
Electronic Pilot Control System
How the boiler works ...
When a room thermostat calls for heat, the
control module starts the system circulator and
activates the vent damper to open. When the
vent damper has opened, the control module
opens the pilot valve and activates
pilot ignition spark. The control
module allows up to 15 seconds
to establish pilot flame.
lf flame is not sensed within 15
seconds, the control module will
turn off the gas valve, flash the
flame lights and immediately
start a new cycle. This will
continue indefinitely until
pilot flame is established or
power is interrupted. Once
pilot flame is proven, the
control module opens the
gas valve to allow main
burner flame.
When the room thermostat
is satisfied, the control
module turns off the gas valve
and deactivates the vent
damper to close.
The control module indicator
lights show normal sequence when the lights are
on steady. When a problem occurs, the control
module flashes a combination of lights to indicate
the most likely reason for the problem.

RE: Hartley / lf.erriJ-L / Robertson remodel , perrnit No. 32L2.
Dear Mr. Allen,
In response to the product information you subrnitted on glass
strength and deflection linits supplied by the glazing manufacturer
and applying the minimurn design reguirenents set forth by the
U.B.C. table 23-8, the following has been concluded.
1. ) The existing L/4" tempered glazing supported on two
sides falls short of the minimum design load
of 8O psf. calculations including the strength
adjustment factor of 4 come to 28.2 psf.
2.) Doing the same calculations using 3/8rr tenpered
glazing comes to 74 psf. This is an acceptable design
thickness of glazing.
In conclusion the Town of vail guilding Departnent will accept
the use of 3/81r tempered glazing for use in the window waII in the
loft bedroorn, supported on two sides. If you have any questions
concerning this issue please call.

permit No. 3212.
Dear Mr. Brown,
As per our discussion on Feb. 23, L989 concerning the glazing
used for the guardraLl / window waII in the bedroorn loft, it isthe Town of Vail building dr:partrnents contention that thissituation is not to code and is viewed as unsafe.
Table 23-B of the 1988 U.ts.c. states the design load of 20.tbs/LF for any guard rail, balcony railings and handrails, thisIoad is applied horizontally aE right angles to the top rail.Sectj-on 54O6(f) states that any glass railing panels and theirsupport system shall be designed to withstand the load specifiedin Table No. 23-8, in addition a safety of 4 shal1 be used whichbrings the design load to 8O lbs/LF. Section 5404 glazing supports, states that glass shall be supported on all four edges with adeflection linit of L/L75 of span. These code iterns listed aboveare the violatj.ons that currently exist and must be correctedbefore a final C of O will be released. The glazing contractorhas failed to suburit the required design information for approvalat this time, the code items listed above are the minimunrequirements that will be accepted by the Town of vail building
department.
With all due respect this problem has gone on much to longmust be resolved as soon as possible, if you have any otherquestions concerning this matter please feel free to call.

GLASS STRENGTH AND DEFLE TION
UNDER UNIFOBM LOAD
GLASS STRENGTH AND DEFLE TION UNDER UNIFORM LOAD
Glass breakage can occurwhen wind loads exceed the design glass strength. This bulletin presents
the results of empirical studies of glass strength.
Wlnd loads
Precise wind loads for buildings in the design stage are difficult to predict. Guidance may be obtained
from buitding codes and ordinances, ANSI Standard A58.1-1982, and the results of wind tunnel tests.
Good engineering judgment is always required.
The architect is responsible for establishing the predicted wind loads on a structure. He may consult
with his engineers or independent windioad authorities. For vrarious building considerations the available
data must be interpreted in different ways. In the case of glass areas the designer must convert his
information on wind loading to an equivalent uniform static load of 30- to 60- second duration. This
is the appropriate load for use with the graphs and equations included herein. For long term loading
(i.e., days or weeks), the strength of annealed glass is approximately one-half of the shorl term (60
second) strength. This bulletin only covers short term loading.
For buildings which are tall, have unusual shapes, or are exposed to unusual surround conditions,
it is recommended wind tunnel tests be conducted to assist in arriving at proper wind loads.
Wind Load Brcakage
Breakage ot ltass due to wind loads can be the result of a number of conditions, either alone or in
combination. Breakage in many cases is caused simply by wind pressures in excess of those predicted
by the designer. This may be due to an error in judgment caused by limited available data or condi-
--'tions which could not reasonably have been foreseen. In other cases-breakage is caused by.wind' .:-''
blown debris.
Other factors which may contribute to wind load breakage are glass supports which are extrem€ly
flexible or otherwise inadequate, glass-tlmetal contact, glass damage or excessive building mo/ement.

The ratio of the width and length of a pane of glass as well as its size and thickness may have an
etfect on fts ability to withstand uniform loads. Test data shows that adjustments for this ratio are small.
ASTM is currerilly investigating this and other etfects.

Basls tor Graphs and Equations
The graphs and equations in this bulletin are based on testing glass to destruction. In etfect they are
a summary of test results. lncluded in the testing were the ranges of glass thickness, types, sizes,
and aspect ratios ordinarily used in building.
Much of the early testing was on plate and sheet glass. With the advent ol float glass, a study was
made to determine the applicability of the early data. lt was found float glass, plate glass, and sh€et
glass had the same strengths for practical purposes. Any differences are not significant enough to('
warrant distinguishing between the three methods of production

'The data presented here is based on large-volume testing of single glass. For some other products
test data is limited and engineering judgments were made.'ln these cases the information may be
slightly conservative.
Guidellnes ior Using Graphs and Equatlons
Before using the accompanying graphs or equations, wind load data for the building should be carefully
analyzed and interpreted to assure the choice of a proper uniform static load. This was discussed
earlier under Wlnd Loads.
Graphs A and B and the equations are based on a design factor of 2.5. This is a value often chosen
by specifiers or required by building codes. In practical terms, this choice means that for a given glass
thickness and area and uniform static load of 60 seconds duration, the statistical probability of failure
is 8 out of 1000 panes. For example, the graph for annealed glass supported on four edges (Graph
A) shows 7a" glass with an area of 50 sq. ft. should withstand a uniform static load (60 second dura-
tion) of about 20 psf. At this load, 8 out of 1000 panes would be expected to fail.
In cases where a probability of breal€ge of I out of 1000 panes is unacceptable to the architect, changes
in the use of the chart may be made to select glass for any required statistical probability of breakage.
Procedures are outlined below:

In using the graphs, the chosen uniform static load should be multiplied by the values in the right
hand column above, i.e., the load factor. For example, if the chosen'load is 30 psf and the load factor
is 1.76 (predicted failure of 1 out of 1000), then the appropriate load for use in the graphs is 30 x 1.76
or 53 psf. This adjustment procedure may be used with Graphs A and B.

GLASS STHENeNT AND DEFLECNON
UNDER UNIFORM LOAD
Page 4
FourSlds Support Strcngth Graphs
Graph A is for annealed glass firmly supported on four edges. lt relates maximum allowable area to
uniform static load (60 seconds duration) and glass thickness.
fci deieimine iiie strengtti ot annealed glass firmly supported on four edges and a uniform static load
of 60-second duration, one can use ihe graph labeled Graph A. For example, the maximum strength
of %'i annealed glass, 50 sq. ft., held on four sides and with a design factor ol 2.5, would be determined
by first locating 50 on the left hand vertical axis, then traversing horizontally until the %" line is in-
tersected. At the intersection, drop down vertically to the bottom horizontal axis and the maximum
silrength should read approximately 20 psf. lf the design load is less than or equal to the ma(imum
strength, the %" annealed would be adequate for that load. :-
Four-Slde Support Strength Equatlons
An alternativq and perhaps more exact way, to determine the maximum strength is by equation. To
determine the maximum strength of any size and thickness of glass at a 2.5 design factor and a 60
uniform static load, the equation is as follows:
p=f(tu,A)=*
P = Maximum strength @ 2.5 design factor
te = Thickness of glass
A = Area of glass (sq. ft.)
lQ = Thickness factbr for four-side supported glass
The chart below lists specilic nominal thicknesses and their corresponding lQ values. After determin-
ing the l(4 value, divide it by the area of the glass (sq. ft.) whose maximum strength you wish to determine.

For example, the maximum strength of r/t" annealed glass, 50 sq. ft. held on four sides and a design

the area (50 sq. ft.) into lQ or 1001 or ro{ = 20.02 psf.
To check ths strength of four.side supported glass other than annealed (i.e., tempered, laminated,
etc.), multiplying factors may be used with the maximum strength of annealed glass as determined
by the graph or by equation. Only one factor can be used at a time for only one glass combination.
Wfen referring to tempered glass it is assumed to have a surface compression greater than 1O,OOO
psi(per ASTM 1048-85). Hoat-sfbigthened glass is assumed to have a surface compression between
loQQ psi and 1Q000 psi. When referring to insulating glass, it is assumed to b€ constructed of two
lites ol equal thickness, hermetically sealed, and largerthan 15 sq. ft. For laminated glass it is assumed
that the load is short term and the glass temperature is less than 100oF.
LOF does not manufacture or fabricate all ol the glass types listed. For final glass strength informa-
tion contact the manufacturer of the glass type desired. Listed below are generally accepted strength
multiplying factors to use wiih four-side supported, single annealed strenglh information:

When using any glasq products, especially tempered, in a two-side support system, deflection becomes
a maior consideration in making the proper glass selection.
Glass Deflectlons
It is important to check the glass deflections for the chosen uniform loads for all types of glass and
support conditions. Excessive dellections may be bothersome to building occupants even though
the glass is adequate to withstand the loads. :
Graphs C and D may be used for determining the center deflection of glass under load. Graph C
is for glass supported on four edges and Graph D for glass supported on two opposite edges.

GLASS STRENGTH AND DEFLECTION
UNDER UNIFORM LOAD
Page 6
rwo-siJe suppoJ Strcngth Graphs
To determine the strength of annealed glass supported on two opposite sides and a uniform static
load of 60-second duration, use graph labdled Griph B fur this type ol support, glass thickness is
determined by the unsupported span. Gl_ass width a-lolg ![g-gupport does not influence the choice
of thickne-ss. Fo-l gxample, the maximum loaQ_a11Q-99ig!-!aSt-o-r-et 2.5 of 3/e" annealed glass with
an unsupported span of 60" would be determined by first locating 60 on the left side vertical axis,
then transversing horizontalty to tne 3/s" line, then dropping vertically to the bottom horizontal a<is.
The maximum load at a design factor of 2.5 should.read app-roximately 16 psf. lf the design load is
less than the maximum load of the 3/a" annealed glass, then it is the appropriate thickness to use
from a strength standpoint.
Two-Slde Support Equations
An alternative to using the strength graphs is to use the following equation for two-side supported
glass with a design factor of 2.5 and a uniform stalic load of 50 seconds:
P = f(ta, Span)=ll
(Span)z
P = Max. uniform load (60 sec.) and design factor of 2.5
tc = Min. glass thickness
Span ='Unsupported span (inches)
Ke = Thickness factor of two-side supported glass

Dear Sin:
0n behalf of oun client, V'lilliam B. Wilson--ownen of condominium
#6 in the Vail Tnaits West Condominiums--we"-are applying for a
vaniance to sections 1307 (a) and L406(a) entitled Ceilings.
This section nequires ceilings to be not less than seven feet
in height at any point.
Ou:r client proposes a loft of approximately 425 squane feet
which would have a ceiling less than 7 feet measured anywhe::e
f:rom the loft f1oon. In addition the present kitchen ceiling
would have to be lowe:red to app:roxirnately 7 feet.
A1so, we would ask a variance to the F.A.R. if it will be
exceeded fon this building. We have no figu:res on the existing
F.A.R. or the allowed.
Please adviEe us aB to furthen info::mation needed if this be the
case.

Dear Mr. Lazo:
Upon your rcquest I have obtained some information r''egarding the use of
screws on the inner stainless steel waII of our double waII chimney.
Our customer service department checked it out with engineering. They
have no concern over sat'ety and the warranty is not effected. The only
recommendations they had were that the screws should be stainless steel
and be as short as possible.
If you have any further questions please contact Bill sites at our toll
free customer service number 800-331-4996.
We certainly do appreciate your concern tbr integrity and safety in your
installations.
