Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its components and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Technical Services 800-381-9312 | +1-401-781-8220 www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO Series TY-FRB, 2.8, 4.2, 5.6, and 8.0 K-factor, Upright and Pendent Sprinklers described in this data sheet are quick response, standard coverage, decorative 3 mm glass bulb-type spray sprinklers designed for use in light or ordinary hazard, commercial occupan- cies such as banks, hotels, and shop- ping malls. The recessed version of the Series TY- FRB Pendent Sprinkler, where applica- ble, is intended for use in areas with a finished ceiling. This recessed pendent sprinkler uses one of the following, • A two-piece Style 10 (1/2 inch NPT) or Style 40 (3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Escutcheon with 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 3/4 inch (19,1 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pendent position, or a • A two-piece Style 20 (1/2 inch NPT) or Style 30 (3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Escutcheon with 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pendent position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. Corrosion-resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be obtained when exposed to corrosive atmo- spheres. Although corrosion-resistant coated sprinklers have passed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suit- ability of these coatings for any given corrosive environment. The effects of ambient temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. An intermediate level of the Series TY- FRB Pendent Sprinklers is detailed in Technical Data Sheet TFP356, and Sprinkler Guards are detailed in Tech- nical Data Sheet TFP780. NOTICE The Series TY-FRB Concealed Pendent Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the appli- cable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted with any questions. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass Bulb, allowing the sprinkler to activate and water to flow. Design Criteria The TYCO Series TY-FRB Pendent and Upright Sprinklers are intended for fire protection systems designed in accordance with the standard installa- tion rules recognized by the applicable Listing or Approval agency (such as, UL Listing is based on the requirements of NFPA 13, and FM Approval is based on the requirements of FM’s Loss Preven- tion Data Sheets). Only the Style 10, 20, 30, or 40 Recessed Escutcheon, as applicable, is to be used for recessed pendent installations. Installation The TYCO Series TY-FRB Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions. NOTICE Do not install any bulb-type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held horizontally, a small air bub- ble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 1 - Frame 3 - Sealing Assembly 4 - Bulb 6 - Deflector * Temperature rating is indicated on deflector or adjacent to orifice seat on frame.2 - Button 5 - Compression Screw inch (1,6 mm) for the 135°F/57°C and 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 286°F/141°C temperature ratings. Obtain a leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprin- kler joint by applying a minimum to maximum torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler Inlet with con- sequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for insufficient adjustment in the Escutch- eon Plate by under- or over-tightening the sprinkler. Re-adjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. The Series TY-FRB Pendent and Upright Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions. 1. Install Pendent sprinklers in the pendent position. Install upright sprinklers in the upright position. 2. With pipe-thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand-tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprin- kler fitting using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (Figure 14). With reference to Figures 1 through 5, apply the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench to the sprinkler wrench flats. Care and Maintenance The TYCO Series TY-FRB must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the following instructions. NOTICE Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection systems from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affected by this action. Absence of the outer piece of an escutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, can delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Exercise care to avoid damage to sprinklers before, during, and after installation. Never paint, plate, coat, or otherwise alter automatic sprinklers after they leave the factory. Replace sprinklers that: • were modified or over-heated. • were damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twisting, wrench slippage, or the like. • are leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion. • were exposed to corrosive products of combustion but have not oper- ated, if you cannot easily remove combustion by-products with a cloth. • have a cracked bulb or have lost liq- uid from the bulb. TABLE C MAXIMUM WORKING PRESSURE TFP171 Page 8 of 10 Initial and frequent visual inspections of random samples are recommended for corrosion-resistant sprinklers to verify the integrity of the corrosion-resistant material of construction. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice. Inspections of corrosion-resistant sprinklers are recommended at close range, instead of from the floor level per NFPA. Inspection at close range can better determine the exact sprin- kler condition and the long-term integ- rity of the corrosion-resistant material, which can be affected by the corrosive conditions present. Responsibility lies with the owner for the inspection, testing, and mainte- nance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the appli- cable standards of the National Fire Protection Association (for example, NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdic- tion. Contact the installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer regarding any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are rec- ommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec- tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers -before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). Initial and frequent visual inspections of random samples are recommended for corrosion-resistant sprinklers to verify the integrity of the corrosion-resistant material of construction. Thereafter, annual inspections per NFPA 25 should suffice. FIGuRe 2 NoMINAl pReSSuRe loSS FoR Model A pIpe lINe StRAIN eRS Page 4 of 6 TFP640 Design Criteria The Strainer is to be positioned hori- zontally as shown in Figure 1 and with the flushing connection pointed verti- cally down as shown. A pipe saddle support sized to fit the Strainer Body (Figure 1) must be locat- ed underneath the center of the outlet. If angle “J” is other than 180°, addition- al provisions must be made for sepa- rate support of the outlet piping The Strainer must be located where there is adequate clearance for com- plete removal of the Basket Assem- bly to facilitate cleaning of the Basket Assembly. In planning the installation, consid- eration must be given to disposal of flushing water since large quantities may be required to ensure thorough cleaning of the Basket Assembly. Typi- cally, the flushing connection is fitted with an appropriately sized, normally closed, flushing connection valve and hose connection. Installation The Model A Pipe Line Strainer is shipped as an assembly. Inlet, out- let, and flushing connections are to be made in accordance with accept- ed piping practices. Provisions for the pipe saddle, basket removal clearanc- es, and strainer flushing must be made in accordance with the requirements given in the Design Criteria Section. Care and Maintenance The following maintenance procedure must be performed as indicated, in ad- dition to any specific requirements of the NFPA. Any impairments must be immediately corrected. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing and maintenance of their fire protection systems and devic- es in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable stan- dards of the National Fire Protection Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any authority hav- ing jurisdiction. The installing contrac- tor or product manufacturer should be contacted relative to any questions. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec- tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. Note Before closing a fire protection system control valve for inspection or mainte- nance work on the fire protection sys- tem that it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection sys- tem must first be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. After placing a fire protection system in service, notify the proper authorities and advise those responsible for mon- itoring proprietary and/or central sta- tion alarms. MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE It is recommended that the Strain- ers be flushed at least annually. More frequent flushing may be necessary where water supplies are non-potable and/or contain debris which could clog 1/3 or more of the Basket open area. Note Never disassemble or remove any strainer component without verifying that the system is depressurized and drained. Strainers should be thoroughly flushed clean after each system operation or flow test and during routine inspec- tions as follows: Step 1. Open the valve in the flushing connection and continue flow until the water runs clear. Step 2. If heavy sediment in the water persists or there are indications that all debris such as large stones may not have been removed, the system must be shut down and the Basket removed for cleaning. The Basket may be slid out after unbolting the End Closure. Step 3. When removing the strain- er Basket, withdraw it slowly to mini- mize the possibility of debris falling out the back. Clean out the inside of the housing before replacing the strainer Basket. Step 4. When reinstalling the end closure, gradually cross tighten all bolts so that a uniform load is applied around the periphery. These valves are typically used to automatically relieve excess pressure in a fire protec- tion system that utilizes a fire pump. Pilot-controlled, the Model RV-1 Valve maintains a relatively constant system pressure at the pump discharge as flow demands change. The Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve may be field-set to a nominal relief “set pressure” of 30 to 250 psi (2,1 to 17,2 bar). Features are as follows: • Globe or angle pattern • Installation in any orientation • One-piece, one-moving-part diaphragm • Ceramic enamel-coated interior • Standard nylon-coated exterior • Accurate pressure control • In-line service • No need to bleed trapped air from the diaphragm chamber • One pilot valve sub-assembly that provides for any outlet “set pressure”; that is; 30 to 250 psi (2,1 to 17,2 bar) NOTICE The TYCO Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valves described herein must be in- stalled and maintained in compliance with this document and with the ap- plicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. TFP1585 Page 2 of 8 • Pressure Gauges: 2-1/2 inch (65 mm) diameter, stain- less steel case, 0 to 350 psi (25 bar). • Strainer, Tube, Fittings, and Needle Valve: Stainless steel Operation The TYCO Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve is normally installed on-line in a tee configuration (Figure 1), after the fire pump and before the system’s check valve. When the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve opens to permit excess flow and to relieve pressure to the atmosphere within the water tank, the fire protection system is accurately maintained at the desired preset pressure. In case the demand of the fire system completely stops, the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve remains fully open, relieving 100% of the pump’s capacity. The check valve then closes, isolating the system from the pump. The pump shuts off safely, avoiding the risk of system surges. As the pump shuts, the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve slowly closes. The operation sequence (Figure 3) is as follows: • When inlet pressure is below the re- lief “set pressure”, the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve Diaphragm Seat is closed and the Pilot Valve Seat is closed. With the Pilot Valve Seat closed, pressure is trapped in the Diaphragm Chamber to seat the Diaphragm, and the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve remains closed. • When inlet pressure is above the relief “set pressure”, the Pilot Valve Seat opens to relieve pressure from the Diaphragm Chamber faster than pres- sure can be re-established through the Needle Valve. Loss of pressure in the Diaphragm Chamber allows the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve to open. • Subsequent to relieving excess pres- sure, when the inlet pressure starts to fall below the relief “set pressure”, the Pilot Valve Seat closes to allow the Diaphragm Chamber to re-pressurize automatically and close the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve. The restriction orifice provided by the Needle Valve controls the speed at which the Model RV-1 Valve closes to provide a slow re-closure. WATER VALVE ISOLATION TANK MODEL RV-1 PROTECTION SYSYEM TO FIRE FIRE PUMP VALVE CHECK VALVE ISOLATION RELIEF VALVE PRESSURE PRESSURE RELIEF FIGURE 1 TYPICAL APPLICATION (Showing pressure relief return to unpressurized tank) Design Considerations The following items must be consid ered and applied accordingly for an installa- tion that will be using the TYCO Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve: • The Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve may be installed vertically or horizon- tally and in any orientation without af- fecting its operating effi ciency. When planning the position ing of the Model RV-1 Valve, it is recommended that consideration be given to the viewing of the pressure gauge. Con sideration should also be given to positioning the Model RV-1 Valve so that the dia- phragm cover is facing up. With the cover facing up, internal access is more easily achieved. • The installation of an isolation valve in the inlet connection to the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve is recommended to facilitate perform ing preventative maintenance on the Model RV-1 Valve. Isolating valves installed per Figure 1 will meet this recommenda tion in addition to providing isolation means for the fire pump, water tank, and fire protection system. • The Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve - must be in an area that is easily ac- cessible for maintenance purposes, not subject to freezing temperatures, and not subject to physical damage. • The Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve is designed for fresh water service. When corrosive atmos pheres and/or contaminated water supplies are pres- ent, responsibility lies with owners to verify com patibility with the pressure relief valve, pilot valve, and trim. Installation dimensions are provided in Figures 5 and 6 for both body styles. Before installing the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve, flush pipe lines to remove all chips, scale, and foreign matter. Exercise care to assure that the trim is not damaged during installation. NOTICE Do not lift the valve by its trim. Otherwise, the trim may be damaged and impair system operation. Make the inlet and outlet connections based on the direction of flow arrow pro- vided on the Diaphragm Cover. The valve cannot operate if connected backwards. Do not alter the trim. Altering the trim will render the valve ineffective and impair system operation. Placing the Valve in Service Perform Steps 1 through 5 when placing the TYCO Model RV-1 Pres sure Relief Valve in service. NOTICE Pressure relief adjustment is only to be performed by experienced personnel who understand the impact of adjust ing the pressure relief setting and who take full responsibility of the relief set ting. Prior to pressurizing the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve, make sure the necessary pressure gauges to measure pressure in the system are installed as required by the system designer. Note: Venting any trapped air from the Diaphragm Chamber is not necessary. 1. Loosen the Pilot Valve Locknut, then completely loosen the Adjust ing Screw. Tighten the Adjusting Screw three turns beyond the point at which spring resistance is encoun tered. 2. Loosen the Needle Valve Locknut, completely tighten the Nee dle Valve Adjusting Screw, loosen the Needle Valve Adjusting Screw one turn, and tighten the Needle Valve Locknut. 3. Start the pump. One hundred per- cent of pump capacity will now flow through the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve into the tank. 4. Slowly tighten the Pilot Valve Ad- justing Screw until the desired re- lief “set pressure” is achieved on the Pilot Valve Pressure Gauge. Make all pilot adjustments slowly and in small increments. 5. Tighten the Locknut and shut off the pump. Note: After any pressure adjustment, the following items are to be recorded on a tag attached to the valve: • Valve installation location • Inlet static pressure • Relief set pressure The tag is not to be removed until after the system has been accepted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction. It is rec- ommended that the tag not be removed even after acceptance by the Authority Having Jurisdiction unless another means of record-keeping is maintained. Care and Maintenance Inspection, testing, and maintenance must be performed in accordance with the requirements of the NFPA. Any impairment must be immediately cor- rected. Refer to Table B for information on troubleshooting valve problems. Responsibility lies with owners for the in spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. The installing contractor or product manu- facturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are recom- mended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local require- ments and/or national codes. Note: Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for mainte- nance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection systems from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affected by this decision. The TYCO Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve requires no lubrication, packing or preventative maintenance. However, re placement of the diaphragm every five years is recommended. Inspections. • Inspect the Model RV-1 Pressure Re- lief Valve on a weekly basis. • Check the valve under static condi tions to assure that the Model RV-1 Pres- sure Relief Valve is not unnecessarily relieving pressure. If necessary, re- adjust the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve by following the instructions in the section Placing the Valve in Ser- vice. If the desired pressure cannot be achieved, the Diaphragm and/or Pilot Valve should be replaced. • During pump start-ups, check that the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve relieves pressure as nec essary. If necessary, re-adjust the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve by following the instructions in the section Placing the Valve in Service. If the desired pressure cannot be achieved, the Diaphragm and/or Pilot Valve should be replaced. • Check that the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve, Pilot Valve, Tube, Fittings, Needle Valve, and Pressure Gauge are in good condition and do not exhibit signs of damage or leakage. • Make sure that the Pilot Valve Locknut is securely tightened. Diaphragm Replacement. Prior to re placing the Diaphragm, the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve must be taken out of service and completely drained. With reference to Figure 2, the Diaphragm Tab is oriented perpendicular to the outlet flow. When reinstalling the Diaphragm Cover, the Diaphragm Cover Fasteners must be uniformly and securely tightened using a cross-draw sequence. After tightening, double check to make cer tain that all Diaphragm Cover fasteners are securely tightened. Pilot Valve Replacement. Prior to removing the Pilot Valve, the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve must be taken out of service and completely drained. When installing the replacement Pilot Valve, the trim components must be replaced exactly as they were. After reinstalling the Pilot Valve and before returning the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve into service, completely unscrew the Adjusting Screw. Then, to place the Model RV-1 Pressure Relief Valve in service, follow the instructions in the section Placing the Valve in Service. NOTICE The Pilot Valve is not field repairable. Attempting to repair the Pilot Valve may render the valve ineffective and impair the system operation. Completely unscrewing the Adjusting Screw of the replacement Pilot Valve will help to avoid an accidental over- pressurization of the system piping prior to achieving the desired relief “set pressure”.
