At the tune of my site visit the excavation had been started for construction of the residence. Woody Coltman of Arrow Excavating was at the site. The site was located adjacent to an existing manmade berm that appeared to have bean constructed far an avalanche chute. "1'be tqp of the berrra appealed to be approximately l5 feet above the Site grade and about 25 feet above ttie cul-de-sac road sur-t'ace grade:. The", cxcavatian was on the west side of this manmade bean. Woody Lottmart excavated a text pit with a backhoe at the earth end of the residence gnd a test pit at the sou#h end of the residence. In my opinion, the soils exposed in the excavation and test pits was a Ioase manmade fill. The fall cazrsisted of a brawn, black, silt~~ sand with rabbles, boulders, and organics. The fill extended to a de~tla of appraximatel~ 15 to 20 teet in the north test pit and approximately to a depth of 12 feet In the south test pit. 'The soil beneath the til3 was a natural soil consisting of a silty, clayey, gravelly, sand. In my opinion, the loose fill will eat safely support a spread fgoting foundation because the fill will sQttle when it becomes wet. The structure needs to be supported by the underlying natural Bolls or a properly compacted ill, Constrvct%on of compacted fill would require removal of the existing loose fill to expose the natural sails. The resulting exoavrtlian would need to be barkfilled with cprnpacted ixl(. T,he compacted fil] would treed to cr~nsist of an imparted granular soil. Due to the organics found In the loose manmade fill 1 do not believe it 15 possible to use the existing material. The catnpacted ~115hould he placed in thin loose lifts, moisture conditioned to within 2 percent of the optirnum moisture content and compacted to at (east 98 percent of the standard C'roctor rnaximum dry density (ASTM D-698). The other possible methods for- construction of foundations that do eat require rennoval of the existing bll are: 1) Carnpactiatr Grouting q£ the existing loose fill, ~) Minnie piles supported ity the underlying natural sails, 3) Helical steal piers, ~4) Drilled piers, and 5 j Driven piles. Due to the boulders found in the existing fill soils, 1 anticipate that driven piles, drilled piers ead helical plea wau)d be difficult to iri5tali..
