Asbestos testing and abatement protects workers, homeowners, neighbors and emergency services responders from ex-
posure to harmful asbestos. The Town of Vail asbestos abatement program is in addition to the State of Colorado's regu-
lations. It is your responsibility to be in compliance with the State. Please contact the State directly for their requirements
at the contact info listed below.
When is asbestos testin4 reauired?
ANY building projects disturbing more than these threshold levels of building materials require asbestos testing:
One- and Two-Family Dwellings: 30 square feet
All Others: 160 square feet
Asbestos testing results must be provided with your application for a building permit.
Tests which identify POSITIVE results at more than 1% require abatement by a State-certified and Vail-registered abate-
ment contractor. An asbestos abatement permit must be approved, and the clearance letter must be submitted to the
Town of Vail before the building permit will be issued

Tips & Facts:
• Even recent construction projects may include asbestos-containing materials, so buildings of � age require testing.
• The "1989 Ban" on asbestos-containing materials is commonly misunderstood. "In fact, in 1991 the U.S. Fifth Circuit
Court of Appeals vacated much of the so-called "Asbestos Ban and Phaseout" rule and remanded it to the EPA. Thus,
much of the original 1989 EPA ban on the U.S. manufacturing, importation, processing, or distribution in commerce
of many asbestos-containing product categories was set aside and did not take effect." - CDPHE

i) All cast in place concrete must be made with Portland cement and attain
minimum compressive strength of 4000 psi after 28 days (minimum compressive
strength of 4000 psi after 28 days for concrete used in slabs). Design based upon
BUILDING CODE REQiJIREMENTS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE (ACI
318), 1999. Concrete placement to conform with "Construction Requirements" as
defined in ACI 318.
2) Reinforcing steel is ASTM Grade 40. Reinforcement placement shall conform to
MANUAL OF STANDARD PRACTICE, 2001 as prepazed by CRSI. All lap
splices to be minimum 36 baz diameters, all horizontal reinforcement to be
continuous around comers and at wall intersections. Minimum reinforcement

3) Structural steel shall be ASTM A36 or better except Wide flanges shall be A992
or better, pipe columns (noted on plans as pipe, in manual as HSS round) which
shall conform to ASTM A500, Grade B(Fy=42 ksi) or better, tube steel columns
(noted on plans as TS, in manual as HSS rectangulaz or square)which shall be
A500 Grade B(F}°46 ksi) or better, anchor bolts and bolts shall be A307 or
better. All struchtcal steel is to be detailed, fabricated, painted and erected in
accordance with AISC STEEL CONSTRUCTION MANUAL, 2005 and CODE
OF STANDARD PRACTICE. All welding to be performed by a certified welder
and conform to AISC and AWS STRUCTURAI, WELDING CODE, 200Q all
electrodes to be EE-70XX .

adopted by the Town of Vail Building Department and the "General Conditions of
the Contract for Construction" (AIA Document A201). All construction must be
completed within the tolerances desssibed in the "Residentia! Construction
Perfom�arice Guidelines" as prepared by the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF
HOME BUILDERS.
G) All structural members aze shown in their final positions propedy braced and
supported; during construction it may be necessary to temporarily shore por[ions
of the structure while other portions are being consttucted. Contact the engineer
for consultation as required.
7) General Contractor is responsible for all non-specified connections, contact

plumbing, sewers, etc.) tluough floors, walls, roofs aud foundation walls with
appropriate sub-contractors. General Contractor is responsible for the means,
methods, techniques, sequences, procedures, workmanship, seasonal scheduling
and job-site safety associated with this project. The General Contractor is to

STRUCTURAL SPECIFICATIONS
All cast in place concrete must be made with Portland cement and attain
minimum compressive strength of 4000 psi after 28 days (minimum compressive
strength of 4000 psi a8er 28 days for concrete used in slabs). Design based upon
BUILDING CODE REQUIItEMENTS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE (ACI
318), 1999. Concrete placement to conform with "Construction Requirements" as
defined in ACI 318.
Reinforcing steel is ASTM Grade 40. Reinforcement placement shall conform to
MANLJAL OF STANDA.RD PRACTICE, 2001 as prepazed by CRSL All lap
splices to be minimum 36 bar diameters, all horizontal reinforcement to be
continuous azound comers and at wall intersections. Minimum reinforcement
protection-

Structural steel shall be ASTM A36 or better except Wide flanges shall be A992
or better, pipe columns (noted on plans as pipe, in manual as HSS round) which

-Roof-80 psf snow.
-Floor-50 psf residential.

5) All construction must comply with the 2003 International Building Code as
adopted by the Town of Vail Building Department and the "General Conditions of
the Contract for Construction" (AIA Document A201). All constructiou must be
completed within the tolerances des¢ribed in the "Residential Construction
Performance Guidelines" as prepared by the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF
HOME BUILDERS.
6) All structural members are shown in their final positions properly braced and
supported; during construction it may be necessary to temporarily shore portions
of the structure while other portions are being constructed. Contact the engineer
for consultation as required.

Genera] Contractor is to coordinate all diaphragm penetrations (i.e., chimneys,
plumbing, sewers, etc.) through floors, walls, roofs and foundation walls with
appropriate sub-contractors. General Contractor is responsible for the means,
methods, techniques, sequences, procedures, workmanship, seasonal scheduling
and job-site safety associated with tlus project. The General Contractor is lo
verify all dimensions and elevations with the architectural drawings. Notify
engineer of all conflicts and omissions behveen various elements of the working
drawings and the existing conditions prior to commencing with that portion of the
project. General Contractor is to inspect remodel projecis and verify prior use and
proper disposal of existing materials (i.e., asbestos, etc.) as required by code.

All materials exposed to exterior and or moisture conditions shall�tie treated for
these conditions (i.e., chemical treatment, staining, painting, daalproofing,
membranes, flastring, etc.) as required by code. All materials to be treated for fire
resistance as required by code.
