Asbestos Testing & Abatement Requirem
Asbestos testing and abatement protects workers, homeowners, neighbors and emergency services responders from ex-
posure to harmful asbestos. The Town of Vail asbestos abatement program is in addition to the State of Colorado's regu-
lations. It is your responsibility to be in compliance with the State. Please contact the State directly for their requirements
at the contact info listed below.
When is asbestos testinq reauired?
ANY building projects disturbing more than these threshold levels of building materials require asbestos testing:
One- and Two-Family Dwellings: 30 square feet
All Others: 160 square feet
Asbestos testing results must be provided with your application for a building permit.
Tests which identify POSITIVE results at more than 1% require abatement by a State-certified and Vail-registered abate-
ment contractor. An asbestos abatement permit must be approved, and the clearance letter must be submitted to the
Town of Vail before the buildinq permit will be issued

and Environmental matrices by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), Lab
Code 101896-0 for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)
analysis and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), Lab ID 101533 - Accreditation Certificate
#480 for Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) analysis. This laboratory is currently proficient in both
Proficiency Testing and PAT programs respectively.
Reservoirs Environmental, Inc. has anatyzed the following samples for asbestos content as per your

Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Addition, 4424 Streamside Circle,
Vail, Colorado.
Dear Mr. Rookey:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
excavation at the subject site on May 13, 20Q9 to evaluate the soils exposed for
foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the
foundation design are presented in this report. The services were perfortned in
accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Blueprint
Construction Company dated May l2, 2009.
Proposed Construction; The proposed addition will be a two story structure over a
basement level. The existing deck and deck footing pads will also be replaced during the
praposed construction. Conventional wood frame construction will be used above grade
with cast-in-place concrete foundation walls below grade. The basement level floor will
be slab-on-grade. The foundation was designed with an assumed allowable soil beaxing
pressure of 3,000 pounds per square foot (psfl and an equivalent fluid unit weight of 50
pounds per cubic foot (pc�. We understand that the existing foundation will be
underpinned on the corners where the existing building will connect with the proposed
addition.
Field Observations: At the time of our site visit, the building and deck pad excavations
had been cut in 1 level from about 3'/z to 5 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The
soils exposed in the bottom of the excavations consisted of relatively dense, slightly silty,
sandy gravel with many cobbles and small boulders. The results of gradation analyses

performed on a sample of the natural granulaz soils {minus 5 inch fraction) obtained from
the site are presented on Figure 1. No free water was encountered in the excavation and
the soils were generally slightly moist to moist.
Foundation Recommendations: Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation
and the nature of the proposed conshuction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed
natural soil designed for an allowabie soil bearing pressure of 3,000 pounds per square
foot (ps� should be adequate for support of the proposed addition and deck footing pads.
The exposed soils tend to compress when wetted and there could be some post-
construction settlement of the foundation if the bearing soils become wet. Care should be
taken when underpinning the existing building foundation. Some settlement of the
existing building foundation may occur. The new foundation should be dowelled into the
existing foundation to reduce differential settlement. Above grade connections between
the existing building and the addition should be designeti to account for some differential
movement.
Footings should be a minimum width of 1 b inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for
columns. Loose and disturbed soils, existing fill and topsoil in footing areas should be
removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils. Exterior
footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for
frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to
span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 10 feet.
Founda.tion wa11s acting as retaining structures designed to resist a lateral earth pressure
based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of 50 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) can be used for
the on-site soil as backfill.
Structural fill placed within floor siab areas can consist of the on-site or imported granular
soils compacted to at least 95% of standard Proctor (ASTM D-648} dry density at a
moisture content near optirnum. Ba;ckfill placed around the structure should be

compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the
building.
Limitations: The recommenda.tions submitted in this letter are based on our observataon
of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface
exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation
influence. This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have
equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be
greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface
conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface
conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data
obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this
letter. Ow services do not include determining the presence, preventian or possibility of
mold or other biological contaminants (MOBC) developing in the future. If the client is
concerned about MOBC, then a professional in this special field of practice should be
consulted.
