Dear Craig:
At your requFSt I have made a site visit to your residence to review the repair work to the main level
deck on the north side of the house. This is a summary of my findings.
The scope of work that is taking place consists of replacing the deck joists and decking for this
structure. The existing supporting brackets are not being modified as part of this process. At the time
of my visit, new 4x6 joists had been installed at 16" o.c. across the support brackets.
The joists span 10' between most of the brackets and 8' at the easternmost bay. I have determined
that the 4x6 joists spaced at 16" o.c. in the 8' bay will adequately support the Town of Vail 100 psf live
load requirement. However, the joists that span 10' do not satisfy this code design load. Additional
joists should be installed between the existing joists to make the system code compliant.
I suggest that either nominal 1'/z x 7" joists or 4x6 joists be installed between the existing joists at the
10' spans. This effectively spaces joists @ 8" o.c. in the 10' bays. The new joists should be toe-nailed
to the bracket top chord with 3-10d nails, and blocking should be installed over the brackets between
the joists. 5/-�" 'Trex' decking spanning over the top of these joists will adequately support the 100 psf
code design �oad.
