1. Steel Column — W-shaped, tubular, 2L back to back, L and Extra Strong Pipe
steel calumns. Min size for W-shape is W4X13 (W/D = 0.79); min size for tubular is
TS 4 by 4 by 0.188 (W/D = 0.59); min sizes for 2L back to back are 2-1/2x2-1/2x3/8
in. (W/D = 0.787) or Sx3-1/2x3/8 (W/D = 0.7'7); min size for L is Sx3-1/2x3/8 in.
(W/D = 0.612); min size for Extra Strong Pipes is nominal diameter 4 in., wa11
thickness 0.337 in. (W/D = 0.832).
2. Ribs —(For use with W-Shaped Columns Only) — Min 1-1/2 in. thick mineral
and iiber boaxd (see Item 5) cut to fit snugly between column flanges. Ribs to be used
to back up butt joints when board thickness is less than 1 in. Ribs are optional for
boards 1 in. thick or greater.
3. Adhesive — Used to secure ribs (Item 2) in place and at butt joints on the sides of
the column. May be used as spackle along joints and over recessed nail heads.

4. Fasteners — The boards (Item 5) are secured to the ribs (for "W" -shape columns)
and to one another by means of steel box (casing) nails spaced max 8 in. OC

be used. The min length of fasteners should be twice the thickness of the board.

5. Mineral and Fiber Board* — The boards are cut in various widths to be
compatible with the size of column being protected.

Boards for W-shape columns placed parallel with the flange are cut the width of the
flange plus 1/4 in. Boards placed parallel with the web are cut the width of the web
face plus twice the board thickness plus 1/4 in.
Boards for tubular or Extra Strong Pipe columns are cut the width/diameter of the
column plus the thickness of the board plus 1/4 in.
The thickness of Mineral and Fiber Board (Item 5) required for rating periods of 1 h,

Effect of Temperature on St�l
The elevated temperatures developed during standard fir� tests advE�rsely affect the properkies of virtually all
materials, even noncombustible ones such as steel. In generai, structurai steef retains 6fl percent of its ambient
temperature yield strength at 1,000° Fahrenheit. During most building fires, temperatures in excess of 1,000°
Fahrenheit are develope,d for relati�ely brief periods of time. Additionally, the structural elements are generally
not loacled to their full design strengih. Consequently, even bare stee( may have sufficient ioad carrying capaci-
ty to withstand ihe effects of fire.
The "standard" ASTM fire test is conducted so that temperatures continu�usly increase, assuming an inexhaustible
fire load, and the members are laaded to full design foad. Figure 28 sr�ows the time/temperature curves for fires
under the standard ASTM tesf compared wiih "rea!" �res with different fire ioads. As a result of the "standard" fire
tests, when building codes speeify fire-resistarrt c.onstruction, fire protection materials are required to "insulate"
structural stee! elements.
Fire casualty statistics indicate that czccupant safety is threatened much rrsore by toxic smoke than structural col-
lapse.

Basic heat transfer principies indicate that the rate of temperature change of a steel beam or column will vary
inversely with mass and directly with the surtace are� thraugh which heat is transferred to tha member. Thus, the
weight-to-heated-perimeter ratio (W!p) oF a structural steel mem6er significantly influences the temperature that

the member will experience when expased to fire. As used in this expression, W is the vuelght per unit length of
the member (Ibs/ft) and D is the inside perimeter of the fire pratection material �inches). Expressions for calcu-
lating D are illustrated in Figure 29 for both columns ar�d beams with either contmur or box protection. In short,
the weight-to-heated-perimeter ratia de�nes the "tttermal sia�" af a stnactural member.
Since the temperature of a structura{ stee4 member is strongly infiuenced by the trVlD ratio, it follows that the
required thickness of fire pratection matecial is also stcongly influenced by We`L3 ratios. This interrelationship is
clearly illustrated in Figure 30 that gives the fire resistance oP s#eel cc�lumn� protected with different thicknesses
of gypsum wallboard as a funct�on of W/D ratios. Clearly the W/D ratio is alm�st as important as the thickness
of the fire protection material. Vl//D ratios are given in the Materials 'Section of the Guide.
In recognition of this basic principfe, a number af semi-empirica! dasign equations have been developed for

Super Firetemp EC
Super Firetemp EC is an inorganic, incombusstible material.
Chemically, it is manufactured by a patented process and is made
from a mineral that results in exceptional strengtf� and extremely
lowwater of hydration. Super Firetemp EC is composed primarily
of lime, silica and reinforcing fibers. The product is white, non-
toxic and contains no asbestos.
Since Firetemp EC possesses good strength aswell as exceptional
insulation qualities, it can be reatlily machined into component
parts of many sizes and shapes.
Applications
Only available in 3" (76 mm►thickness and 36" (914 mm) length,
Super Firetemp EC is used to provide a one hour fire resistance
rating for %"' to 4" (13 mm to 102 mm) electrical conduit. It can be
used indoors or outdoors with an approved weather protection
system, and is approved for EMT and rigid conduit.
Super Firetemp EC is UL classified for a one hourfire resistance
rating for electrical circuits.
