Dear Mr. Esrey:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed two
exploratory pits at the subject site on September 5, 2007 to evaluate the soils exposed for
foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the
foundation design are presented in this report. The services were performed in
accordance with our agreement for professional engineering services to you, dated August
23, 2007.
It is proposed to widen the existing deck located at the southwest corner of the residence
by 3 feet to the south and west. The existing deck on the south side is supported by two
exterior columns. Total bearing on the pad footings is estimated to be currently 2,500 psf
and 3,500 psf after the deck addition. We understand there has been no settlement
distress to the existing deck.
At the time of our visit to the site, an exploratory pit had been dug from 4 to 5' /z feet deep
adjacent to each of the existing columns. The soils exposed in the pits consisted of sandy
gravel and clay mixed fill with cobbles and boulders overlying natural sandy gravel with
clay at bearing level of the existing pads. Results of swell- consolidation testing
performed on a sample of the matrix soils from bearing level, shown on Figure 1, indicate
low to moderate compressibility under conditions of loading and wetting. No free water
was encountered in the pits and the soils were moist to very moist. The existing pad
footings appeared to be 3 feet square by 11 inches deep.

Considering the conditions exposed in the exploratory pits and the nature of the proposed
construction, increasing the loading on the existing pad footings to a maximum bearing
pressure of 3,500 psf should be adequate with some settlement potential. We expect the
settlement will essentially occur under initial loading. If indications of continued
settlement are observed, we should be contacted. Backfill placed around the columns
should be compacted and the surface graded to drain away from the building for at least
10 feet.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the shallow exploratory pits and do not include subsurface exploration to
evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This
study is based on the assumption that the soils beneath the footings have equal or better
support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than
indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In
order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the
excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface
exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
