The following snow load calculations have been provided to address the questions you and the town of Vail
have regarding snow drifting and snow retention design on the Dobson Ice Arena. 1 have reviewed the plans
and revised the snow fence pattern based on information provided by The Garland Company, Inc. While
snow loads vary based on weather patterns and sun exposure, the snow loading is designed equally on both
sides of this roof for the worst case scenario. This worst case scenario is a combination of the balanced
snow load, sliding snow load from high roof to low roof, and leeward snow drifting loads. My attached
calculations address these and result in the snow fence pattern shown on the roof plan.
Thank you and please let me know if yo e any questions.

The Dobson arena was designed in 1978h1 t K B`hTA Eng' ' s. e original roof const c i fi
wood shingles on 5/8" plywood spannin q - RtT d
girders. The design snow load was 65 pounds per square foot (ps.
The proposed reroofing project will remove the wood shingles and replace them with a standing seam metal
roof. Four rows of snow fencing are proposed to hold the snow on the roof.
Discussion
The current snow load requirements are 100 psf for flat roofs and 80 psf for roofs with slopes of 4:12 or
greater. The Dobson Arena roof is sloped at 4:12 so the required snow load is 80 psf which is 15 psf heavier
than what the roof is designed for. The current building codes require the design of roof structures to account
for drifted snow (snow that is blown off the windward facing slope of the roof and deposited on the leeward
slope of the roo fl. The Dobson Arena roof was not designed for this loading condition as it was not a common
practice at that time.
Our analysis, including assessment of the actual loading with the replacement roof, showed that the roof
structure is capable of supporting a 65 psf snow load. The roof will not meet the current building code
requirements. Therefore, if the building is to stay in operation during periods of heavy snow accumulation, the
snow must be removed from the roof when it reaches 65 psf in any given area.
Recommendations:
The Vail Recreation District should develop a snow removal action plan for the Dobson Arena. The weight of
the snow on the roof should be measured on a timely basis when the accumulation of snow on any given area
of the roof approaches three (3) feet. The measurements can be ta.ken with commercially available snow
measuring tubes or a homemade tube constructed of PVC pipe or similar material. To measure the snow, the
pipe is pushed down to the level of the roof. The snow should be retained in the tube. The tube is then
suspended from a spring scale that measures the weight of the tube and the retained snow. The weight of the
Dobson Arena Roof
July 29, 2009
Page 2
snow is computed from a predetermined conversion chart. The weight of any ice that has accumulated on the
roof and wasn't captured in the snow tube should also be added to determine the actual snow load. When the
weight of the snow approaches 65 psf, most of the accumulated snow should be removed from the roof.
There are margins of safety for a temporary snow load that may go above 65 psf. This will allow for some
flexibility in the timing of the snow removal. In no case should snow loads greater than 65 psf be allowed to
remain on the roof for more than 7 days.
This report is based on information gathered from the original structural drawings. No visual observations,
invasive testing or inspections were performed. We do not accept responsibility for structural deficiencies that
may exist. This report is only intended to esta.blish the snow load capacity of the existing roof structure.
A visual structural condition assessment of the roof would be prudent based on the limited snow load capacity.
The roof may have sustained damage if the snow load during its 30 year life has exceeded 65 psf.
We appreciate this opportunity to be of service. Please ca11 if you have any questions regarding this report, our
recommendations or if we may provide you with a structural condition assessment of the roof/building.

RE: Snow Retention System
Dobson Ar na Roaf
Martin/Martin Project Na. 21Ei62.S.01
Mr. O'Connell:
Per your request, I hav reviewed the snflw retention system propnsed for ihe new standing seam raof of
the Dc bson Arena. I have alsc reviewed the Garland Company sh} drawings and calculatic ns that were
prepared for this project.
Back r
The I7obsan arena was designed in 1978 by KK.BNA Engineers. The ariginal roafcanstruction consisted
of r ood shingles an 51$" p(ywood spanning hetween 16" d ep waod-web t joists on glued-laminated
wood purlins and girders. The design snow load wxs 65 pounds per square foot (pst.
The propased reroofing project will remc ve the wt ad shingles and replace them with a standin seam
metal roof. Faur rows af 5-5 Colorgard fences are prcapased to hald the snow on the raaf. Our previous
review af the original roof framing has shown that remnval of accumulated snow wi1) be required when
the weight of the retained snow on the raaf exceeds 65 psf.
Discussion
The snow retention system has been designed to hold the 65 psf snaw lt ad and any drifted sttaw on the
roof. Their calculatians indicate that two (2) 3/8" diameter balts are needed at each seam in the roof to
hald the snow in place. The shop drawings shaw that a total c f fc ur (4) 3/8" diam ter bolts will be
pravided at the top two connections ofeach rooipanel; twice what the calculations say is needed.
The S-5 Colorgard fences will be held in p(ace at each roaf seam r,vith a Versaelip that is attached to an S-
5 Clamp with a/8" diarneter bolt. I"he fences will be stabilized with one ( I) 5-5 4" Snowclip in the
middle of each roof panel.
Recommendation:
The Garland Campany is providin twice the number of bolts that their calculations show is needed to
hold the snaw on the raof and we are comf rtable with that. °f'he attachmeni of the snow fences to the
roof seams appears to be adequate if the clamps arc properly instalied.
Llabsc n Arena Roof
Septemb r 4, 2009
Page ?
Because snow on the roof will need to be unlaaded when the accumuiated wei ht af the snaw approaches
65 ps% we recornmend that the snow fences be flagged ar marked in sotne way sa that workers on the
roaf can lacate the snaw fences and protect them from damage during snow remaval a eratians.
This report is based on information provided by The Garland Company. No wisua! observatians, testing or
inspections were perform d. We do not aecept responsibifity far the structural adequacy of the snaw
retention system. 'i'his report is anly intended to repart the results of nur review of the snaw retention
system.
We appreciate this opportunity to be of service. Please call if vou have any questions regarding this
report, our recommendatic ns.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Garland HPR Fire-Tite FR Base Sheet is a self-adhering,
m ulti-pu rpose, fire retardant u nderlayment designed to provide
a self-sealing, waterproof, fire barrier under a variety of roof
systems. It is uniquely constructed to prevent the ignition of
combustible decks at approved slopes.
This versatile system can be used in conjunction with virtu-
ally any roof including: Built-up, Modified Bitumen, Single
Ply, Metal, Tile and Shingle systems. It can also be applied
in a single layer as a temporary roof, providing a"Class A"
fire rating over combustible decks in approved assemblies
at approved slopes.
PRODUCT ADVANTAGES
Fire Resistant -The membrane's unique design prevents both
penetration and spread of flame. This fire retardant material
provides.a "Class A" fire rating over a combustible deck in a
single layer application, when used in approved assemblies
at approved slopes.
Self Adhering -This outstanding feature can eliminate the need
for kettles and torches. Simply remove the release paper and
apply the membrane to the substrate. This greatly increases
the speed of application and lowers the overall job cost. In
addition, Garland's HPR Fire-Tite FR Base Sheet provides a
watertight seal during the installation of a new roof system.
This material may be used as both the temporary roof and
as a fire resistant barrier when used with other roof systems
such as: Built-up, Modified Bitumen, Single Ply, Metal, Tile,
and Shingle systems.
Non-Slip Surfacing - HPR Fire-Tite FR Base Sheet provides
a non-slip substrate for foot traffic during the roof applica-
tion. Many applications for Garland's HPR Fire-Tite FR Base
Sheet are on roofs with steep slopes where falls are a greater
concern.
Self-Sealing - Unique technology allows the membrane to
seal around fasteners which penetrate the membrane. This
feature is critically important when attaching clips or hat chan-
nels which must be fastened through the HPR Fire-Tite FR
Base Sheet and into the structural deck.
Cutting Edge Technology - Revolutionary technology pro-
vides a water tight environment with a fire protection in a
single layer application over a combustible deck without the
need for barrier boards or insulation.
APPLICATION
Ju 8 zoo9
awr v
HPR Fire-Tite FR Base Sheet can be used in conjunction
with a variety of roof systems including: Built-up, Modified
Bitumen, Single Ply, Metal, Tile and Shingles. The membrane
can be either self adhered or mechanically attached to the
structural deck. In addition, it can be used as a fire barrier
in conjunction with insulation in some metal assemblies.
The roof system or insulation will then be installed over the
HPR Fire-Tite FR Base Sheet following the manufacturer's
specifications. Additionally, when bonding the roof system
directly to the HPR Fire-Tite FR Base Sheet, you must first
mechanically fasten the HPR Fire-Tite FR Base Sheet to the
structural deck. Adhering directly to a sheet that has not been
mechanically attached is prohibited.
NOTE: HPR Fire Tite FR Base Sheet rolls are individually boxed.
Store rolls in these closed containers until ready for installation.
Apply when the ambient air temperature, roll temperature and
substrate temperature are 50°F (10°C) or above. Application
in cool temperatures will negatively affect adhesion.
