At your request, on March 27, 2007, we visited the construction site on Lot 10, Vail
Village West, Filing No. 1, 1772 Alpine Drive, Town of Vail, Eagle County, Colorado. The
purpose of our site visits was to observe the soils exposed in the foundation excavation and
compare them with the findings and recommendations of the Soil and Foundation Investigation
Report, under the same project number, dated January 4, 2005.
The excavation consisted of benches and trenches stepping into the lot. There were about
two benches, a perimeter trench on the north side and holes for isolated footing pads. The
excavation cuts, varied from about 40 feet on the south part to 4 feet on the north part of the
foundation excavation. The bottom 30 feet of the south excavation cut were improved by
shotcrete, and on top of the cut were two tiers of a block [Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE)]
retaining walls. The soil exposed in the foundation excavation, was consistent with the findings
and recommendations of the above-named soil's report. It consisted of brown, silty, gravelly sand
with cobbles. The soil exposed in the foundation excavation is suitable for the recommended
bearing capacity of 1500 psf. The bottom of the excavation was compacted. Soft spots were not
reported.
We recommend compliance with the recommendations of the above-named soil report
during the remainder of the construction, specifically with the sections on draina�e, rg adin� and
irri at�n. Also, during winter construction, the foundation bearing soil and the newly poured
concrete should be protected from freezing. Backfilling with frozen soil, and%or trapping ice and
snow under parts of the foundation or under the slab on grade, can cause settlement at a later
date.

Lots 10 8� 71 Alpine Drive, Soil Nail and Shotcrete Retaining Wall
In September and October of 20p5, HTM Construction Company installed a soil nail
and shotcrete retaining wall at the Dantas Residence, Lots 10 8� 11 located in Vail,
C0. Weekly inspectio�s were made to insure that the retaining wall was built to the
plans and specifications. A final inspection was completed on February 20, 2007.
The construction of the soif nail refiaining wall meefis all the requirements of the plans
completed by SAC Design Group dated May 30, 2006.

This letter is in response to a request from the contractor to pour tall concrete foundation walls in two pours.
This is acceptable, provided the construction joint is not located within 2'-0 of a floor. Reinforcing dowels across
the construction joint, of the same size and spacing as the vertical wall reinforcement, may be wet set a
minimum of 2'-0 into the concrete, and must extend a minimum of 2'-0 into the upper portion of the wall.
