Town af Vail Mechanical Codes and Design Criteria
♦ You must obtai� Design Review Board (DRB) approval if any of the mecha�ical work will involve
ANY�xterior work.This �ncludes ac�d Es not limit�d to removal and replacement of dri�eway snow
melt systems. Qlease contact the Development Review Coardinator at 479-2�28 for additional
information.
♦ The 7vwn of Vail has adopted the 2003 International Mechanical Code a�d the 2003 Int�rnational
Fuel Gas Code.
♦ All new construction within the Town of Vail is consid�red to be of unusually tight conskruction,
thus all connbustion air is required to be drar+vn from o�tside the structure for mechanical
equipment.
Town of Vac! �ireplace Ordinance
In September of 1991,the Vail Town Council adopted an ord�nance which restricts te construction and
use of open hearth fireplaces within municipal t�oundaries. Since that time the ordinan�e has
undergone numerous changes and revisions,striving for compromise,yet�ffeetiveness in addressing
the air quality issue. Therefore the following criteria has been adopted:
♦ Construction of open hearth wood burning fireplaces is no langer permitted within Town of Vail
municipal boun,dartes.
♦ Dwel1inc� l�nits— Each new dwell'�ing unit may conta�n:
One (1) EPA Phase II certified solid fue!burning device and no more than two(2)gas apptiances
(B vent) .
OR
Two (2} gas log freplaces and no more tt�an two (2) gas appliance fireplaces {B be�t}.
� Restricted Dwellinq Units— Each new restricted dwelling unit may contain:
One {1) gas log fireplace and not mor�than one (1) gas appliance fire�lace.
♦ Accommodation Un�ts— Each new accommadation unit may contain:
One {1) gas log freplace or one (1) gas appiiance firepface.
♦ If two or more separate dwelling units or accommodation units are combined to form one larger
unit,the combined �nit may retain one woodb�rning fireplace (�f one already exists) a�d no more
than 2 gas appliance fireplaces, or may convert �p to two existing Freplaces to gas.
♦ If during the course of a remodel an ex`sting woodburning Freplace is altered or mo�ed, the unit
r�ust then comply with all provisions of the ordinance. That is, the fireplace must be converted to
natural gas or r�placed by an EPA Phase II certified unit.
