Michael,
As per you request we are providing you with our letter specifying the grease duct-to-fan connection in
the Concession Center in Ford park in Vail.
Per the code IMC 2009 section 506.3.2.3 the grease duct shall be connected to the fan via a gasketed
flange. The gasket shall be rated to no less than 1500° F and the connection should allow fan
replacement or service of the fan.
Based on that, the silicon sealant cannot be used for duct-to-fan connection.
If a sealant is used, it can be applied for duct joints if the duct is manufactured by a manufacturer (e.g.
CaptiveAire Grease ductwork) using clamps for connections. In that case the features of the sealant shall
be:
1) Must comply with class 25 of ASTM 920
2) Rated for 1500° F or more (e.g. CaptiveAire recommends 2000° F)
3) Provides up to 4 hour fire rating
Let me know, if this answers your questions.
Regards
Martin Zourek, M.E. Stan Humphries, P.E.
