2. Allowable load values are based on lumber with all of the following characteristics:
a. Located in dry service conditions where the moisture content does not exceed 19%for an extended period
of time such as in most covered structures.
b. Located where it does not experience sustained exposure to elevated temperatures that exceed 100°F.

Guidelines for FasteninEZ roof Mount with 2 or 4 side hole screws.
2-8-2013 CBS
A number of installers would like to use the auxiliary holes on the EZ roof mount to fasten to non-typical
rafters in lieu of using the 4 inch by 5/16 lag bolt provided. The following discussion will provide some
guidelines for such installations.
A 5/16 lag screw installed in Doug Fir or other typical roof joist material has a pullout value of 235 to 266
Ibs. per inch of thread embedded in the wood (American Wood Table, 2005). When used with the EZ
roof mount system, approximately 2 to 2.5 inches of thread are imbedded,so a nominal pullout value of
470 to 530 Ibs.Actual laboratory testing of the EZ roof mount for IAPMO listing of the product provided
values of 720 Ibs with a minimum penetration of 2.5 inch.
The goal in substituting other fasteners in the auxiliary holes is to achieve similar values to maintain the
integrity of mounting system.
Various screws in the#12 and#14(1/4 inch diameter) range are available. The choice of a fastener
should include consideration of the material to which it is fastened;wood, plywood, metal purlin, or
concrete roof. Included in the consideration is that the head fit in the well in the shoe, and that the head
not extend above the well which will compromise the waterproof gasket of the EZ Roof Mount system.
The simplest substitution would be to use 2ea. %inch lag bolts into wood. With 2 inches of penetration,
a pullout per bolt is 164 Ibs. per inch of thread. Assuming a tread depth of 1.5 inches, the pullout would
be 235 Ibs.,and a pair of bolts would be 470 Ibs.Two'/.inch bv 3 inch las bolts(470 Ibs.)would vield a
similarlullout value as a sin¢le 4 inch 5/16 labolt(470 to 530 Ibs.) Particular care would need to be
taken to insure that at least 1.5 inches of the smaller% lag bolts were embedded in the wood member.

Another common request is to use 2 or 4 screws in plywood. In general, unless the plywood were thick
enough to allow 1.5 inch of thread penetration, 2 screws would not handle the load. One way to handle
this situation would be to use a toggle type fastener such as the Toggler TM product. Attached to%inch
plywood, the Snaptoggle mounted in a%2 inch hole provides 356 Ibs of pullout strength, assuming the
plywood holds.Therefore.a 2each,'/:inch hole. (#10 screw)SnapToles in'/:inch plvwood would
provide in excess of the stren¢th of a sinle 4 inch labolt.
."'W'!r"'' '
The use of 4 wood fasteners directly in plywood is also anticipated. Shown in the 1999 APA plywood
tables, a#10 wood screw inserted in a%2 inch plywood sheathing has a ultimate pullout value of 360 Ibs,
and applying a safety factor of 2.5,a pullout of 144 Ibs. The proper installation is for the screw to
penetrate the plywood with the tapered tip protruding from the plywood (presumably into the attic
space. By applvin4 each.#10 wood screws in'/:plvwood,a total pullout value includinsafetv factor
would be 576 Ibs..which is eauivalent to a sinele 5/16 lascrew.

,
There are many choices for alternate fastening screws. We recommend that Stainless Steel 316 be used
exclusively. Lag screws are very common, with the% inch by various lengths readily available. An
excellent self drilling metal screw for purlin fastening is the Simpson Self-drilling Truss Screw in various
lengths, typical part number F14C200T10. For plywood screws,Simpson makes an excellent 1 inch
screw in#10, 12, and 14, model T12J100PXC.Togglers are available at some Hardware stores and on-
line at the Toggler site.

RE: PV Panel Addition at the Pierce Residence
2730 Bald Mountain Road
Vaii,CO 81657
Dear Isaac:
As requested we have reviewed the proposed photovoltaic panel addition at the residence noted above. Our analysis is
based upon the original drawings and specifications provided by Sunsense on April 10,2013. We have also reviewed
the existing roof framing based upon existing structural drawings provided by Venture Architecture, designed by
Engineering Designworks dated Apri14,2012. The existing conditions shall be verified by contractor prior to
construction. We shall be notified if conditions are found to differ from that shown on the referenced set of existing
structural drawings or as stated within.
The applicable current codes are the 2012 International Residential Code and the 2012 International Building Code per
the Town of Vail. The applicable structural design criteria are as follows:
Roof Dead Load 20 psf(assumed, including 3 psf PV panel&rack)
Roof Snow Load 80 psf at modified roof area(7:12 w/slippery surface at panels)
Wind Criteria 90 mph,Exposure B
The existing roof framing is assumed to be 5/8"APA rated sheathing,40/20,spanning perpendicular over 11 7/8" 1 joist
or LVL rafters, spaced at a maximum of 24"o.c. The sheathing is assumed to be attached to the rafters with 8d common
nails at 6"o.c.at panel edges and at l2"o.c.to intermediate framing members. The design of the panels, the panel racks
and connections between shall be per the manufacturer for the applicable design criteria. For the layout and attachment
of the racks to the roof refer to the Sunsense Fastening Layout on P-O5,dated April 8,2013. Orion EZ Roof Mount L-
Foot Kit for shingle roofs shall be used for the connections to the existing roof, installed per manufacturer. Each circular
base plate shali be attached with(4)#12 x 2 '/<"Dekfast screws. Screws shall have a minimum '/4"through sheathing
penetration and(2)screws shall penetrate an existing rafter'/2"minimum. The center of the L-Foot base plates shall be
located over the rafters, with a maximum tolerance of 1 '/z"to the center of rafter.
Per the design criteria, assumptions and recommendations stated above,it is our professional opinion that the existing
roof structure is adequate for the proposed PV panel addition.
Should you have any further questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact our office.
Sincerely,
Evolve Structural Design LLC
