Subject: Observation of Footing Pad Excavation at Front Walkway, 5114 Grouse
� Lane, Vail, Colorado
�� Mr. Keep:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
excavation at the subject site on May 8, 2013 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation
support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation
design are presented in this report. The services were performed in accordance with our
ageement for professional engineering services to you, dated May 6, 2013.
A single footing pad is proposed near the southwest corner of the front walkway.
At the time of our visit to the site, the footing pad excavation had been cut in one level
from 3'-10"to 4'-10"below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the
bottom of the excavation consisted of clayey sandy gravel and cobbles. The results of a
gradation analysis perfortned on a sample of clayey sand and gavel(minus 3 inch
fraction) obtained from the site are presented on Figure 1. No free water was encountered
in the excavation and the soils were very moist from recent precipitation.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, a footing pad placed on the undisturbed natural soil designed far an
allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,500 psf should be adeyuate for support. The
settlement potential should be relatively minor, on the order of%2 inch. The footing pad
should be a ininimum width of 2 feet and minimum depth of 3'h feet for frost protection.
Loose disturbed soils and mud in footing excavation should be removed down to the
undisturbed natural soils. Structural backfill can consist ofthe on-site granular soils
compacted to at least 95%of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near
optimum.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to
evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This
study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better

support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than
indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In
order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the
excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface
exploration could change the recorrunendations contained in this letter.

� Gentlemen:
� As requesteci, we observed the installation of helical piers for the deck addition at the
subject site on May 16, 2013. A summary of our observations and conelusions are
presented in this report. The pier installation observations were performed in accordance
� with our agreement for services with you dated May 6, 2013. We previously observed a
footing pad excavation in the front of the house that exposed dense sandy gravel and
� cobble soils, report dated May 13, 2013.
�� Eigl�t helical piers were installed along the north side of the existing residence at the time
of our site visit. A summary of the pier installation observations is presented in the
attached Helical Pier Observation Report. The piers consist of a single, 8-inch diameter
helix and 1 1;2-inch, square steel shaft (Heli-Pile} advanced with a hydrautic drill head.
All piers were advanced to torque or penetratian refusal apparently in the dense natural
sandy gravel and cobble soils.
Based on our observations, the piers were advanced to torque or penetration refusal in the
natural granular soils and should be suitable to support the designated design load
capacities of 3 to 7.5 kips.
