thus af� combustion air is required to be drawn from outside the structure for mechanical

In SeQtember of 1991,th�Vail Town Council adopted an ordina�ce which restricts te construction and
use of open hearth freplaces within municipal boundar�es. Since that #ime the ordi�an�e has
undergone numerous changes and revisions,�triving for compromise,yet effectEVeness in addressi�g
the air quality issue. Therefore the following zriteria has been adapted:
♦ Construction of open hearth woad burr�ing fireplaces is no longer permitted within Town of Vai1
muni�ipaE bo�ndaries.
• Dwe�lina Uni#5— Each new dwelling unit may contain:
Une{1) EPA Phase II certified solid fuel burning cEevice and no more than two(2)gas ap�li�rt�es

Town of Vail Fireplace Ordinance
In Se�stember of 1991,the Yail Town Counci�adopted an ordinance which res�icts te constructEan and
use of Qpen hearth fireplaces within municipal boundaries. Since that time the ordinance has
undergone numerous changes and re�ision5,striving for compromise,ye�t effectiveness in addressing
the air quality issue. Therefore the following criteria has been adopted:
� Construction of apen hearth wood burning freplaces is no ianger perm�tted within Town a#V'aii
municipal boundaries.
♦ Dwefling Units— Each new dwelling un�# may ccmtain:
One{1) EPA Phase II certifiied solid fuel bur�ting device and nv rnare than two(2)gas appliances
(B vent) .
OR
Two (2) gas log fireplaees and no r�aore than twa (2) gas appliance frep�aces (B bent).
� ♦ Restricted Dwellina Units— Each �ew restri�.ted dvrrelling unit may contain:
Une (1) gas fog fireplace a�d not more than a�e (1) gas appliance fireplace.
♦ Accommadatio� Units— Each new accommodation unit may co�tain:
ane (1) gas �ag fireplace or one (i} gas applia�ee fireplace.
♦ If two or more separate dwelling units or accommodation units are combined to form one larger
un�t,the combined un�t may rett�in une woodburning fireplace (if o�e already exists�and r�a m�re
than 2 gas appli�nce frepl�ces, or may con�ert up to twa existing fireplaces to gas.
♦ If during the caurse of a remadel an exist�ng wocydburning fireplace is altered �r moved, the unit
must then comply with atl provisions of the ordinance.That is,the fireplace must be conrertecl to

Phase II unit #220 in Vail, CO. Full he�ght 4" stone veneer {9'-Q max. height) wiil be added ta the face of the
fireplace, as well as a stone mantel and hearth. The existing �loar structure consists of precast concrete double
tee's which span the width af the building. A continuous L4x4x1/4 steel angle (approximately 6'-6" long) should
be add�d to support the stone veneer above #he manteL This angle should be fastened to a C4x5.4 header
supparting the stud wall behind the veneer with 1/2" diame#er through balts @ 24" o.c. The header shall span
the width of the fireplace and b� supparted by (2) stu�s at each end. Otherwise it appears the existing structure
is adequate to support the anticipatec�design IQads.
