Discussion of the board related to the requirement of the amended
energy code requiring a maximum of .30 u value for glazing of new single family homes.
Representatives of Jeld Wen and Pella were present to discuss the pros and cons of there ability
to provide .30 windows.
Martin Haeberle, Chief Building Official, began the discussion explaining that if a computer based design for the building envelope, rescheck, is used that you
can go as high as.40 tabulated value. This would however require tradeoffs to accomplish this and the complete energy analysis would be required. In the past the prescriptive provisions
which is now .30 has been traditionally used.
A lengthy discussion took place on how the glazing industry will be dealing with the providing of the low u value glazing. There was
some disparity between manufacturers as to cost and the reliability of providing low u value glazing. All agreed that the future code editions will require the lower u values and that
the manufactures will be required to comply.
The board concluded that no action is to be taken on the existing requirements because the architect/ designer has a way of achieving compliance
when it is difficult to provide low u value glazing.
