Vail�agle Bahn Gondola—ATC Outdoor DAS 1
Rondinelli Life Safety a BCER Group has been commissioned by American Tower as requested
by the Tawn of Vail Fire and Ernergency Services to evaluate the impact of the ATC Outdoor
DAS on the existing fire protection and life systems af the Vail Eagle$asin Gondola as
connected to the Arrabelle. Below is a description ofthe new installatian on the existing systems
and our recommendation.
' BUILDING DESCRIPTION
The project is the installation of electronic equipment far the purposes of providing a means far cellular
' carriers to provide their customers ceiluIar sen�ice in and around the Vail Mountain area.This in know as
' a DAS (Distributed Antenna System}.The signal distribution is via fiber to remote antenna locations off-
site.The space will be cnmpromised of open floor space under the Eagie Bahn Gondola Deck(Lift 19).
The new electronic equipment will be installed,operated and maintained as presented in the July 29,2013
Permit Drawings.This installatian is nat occupied except for maintenance of the equipment.
The Eagte Bahn Gondola is eonnected to the Arrabelie Complex and consists of equipment for the
operation of the Gondoia as well as providing access and egress from the Arrabelle Complex.The
Gandoia was provided with additional fire protection and egress improvements when the Arrabelle
Complex was constructed.These systems included sprinkler pratection,fia-e alarm notification and special
extinguishment systerns for electrical equipment raoms.
APPLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS
• 2012 International Bnilding Code(IBC)
• 2Q 12 International Fire Code(IFC)
• Town of Vail Amendments and Policies
OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATION
The existing oecupancy is nat changed ar impacted with the addition of this ec�uipment.
EGRESS AND OCCUPANT LOADS
Egress is curre�itty provided at grade level via the Gondola from Arrabelle.'The exits are the spirat stair
connecting the grade level to the upper Gondola level and a set of doars that exits directly to tl�e exteriar.
The addition of the equi��ment will nat impact the existing egress or e�ress paths.However,with the
addition of the screening and gates peopie exitin�the grade level will be required to exit th ough the
access gate.The�ate swin�s in the direction of egress.Recommend ensuring that the�ate remains not
locked from the inside and permits passa e with no special knowled�e or procedure.
This gate must also remain accessible from the outside.The gate can be locked but should be provided
with a Tawn af Vail Fire Department Knox Box nlonnted at a f�re department approved location with
appropriate signage.

FTRE RATED SEPARATIONS
There is no special fire rated separation required for the installatian of this equipment.The permit plans
indicate that penetrations from the exterior through the wall will be sealed with UL listed fire caulking per
property owner appraval. Althougli not required by code,this recommendation is supported by our
review.
CONSTRUCTION TYPE A.ND AREA INCREASES
The addition of this equipment does not impact or change the construction type ar alIowable area of the
Gondoia.
FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
' This building is provided with a code camplying NFPA 13 �re sprinkler sy�stem throughout tl3e grade
: level Gondola area including the exterior open air space the new equipment will be installed. Enclosed
areas i►i the Gondola also have alternate extinguishm�nt systems.This equipment will not irnpact the
current Iire protecfion system design and capabilities ofthe system.The equipment will be adequately
protected by the existing fire protection syste�n in the Gondola.
FIRE DETECTIUN AND ALARM SYSTEMS
The area is currently provide with a fire alarm systenn including manual fire pull station in the Gondnla
area near the exit and occupant notification throughout the gondola.Tliis equipment wilJ not impact the
current fire protectian system desi�n and capabilities af the system.
EMERGENCY AND STANDBY POWER SYSTEM
There is an existing generator system in the enclosed Gondola.The generator is fueled by nalural gas with
an emergency shut off located approximately 10 feet from exit doars at grade under the canopy of the
Gondola . This emergency shut off is currently marked with sigiage and is accessible from the exterior.
"I'he July 29,2013 permit drawings indicate an additional generator(natural gas)will be installed.
Accarding to American Tower on October S,2013 that installation will not oceur until a later date.The
installation af the additional generator wilI not impact the fire protection or egress from the Gondola.
Signage shauld be included indicating lacation of the emergency gas shut off with that ir►stallation.
FiRE SERVICE FEATURES

Fire department access is currently provided to che Uandola,specificully tlie grade level.The installation
of this equipment including the screen wall and�ates will not be impacted by the installation of this

Key Boxes
Key box should be added at the screen walUaccess gate to provide access ta the covered Gondola area.
The location of the key box is to approved by the Fire Department.
RECOMMENDATION
Rondinelli Life Safefy a BCER Group has reviewed the July 29,2p13 Permit Drawings for installation of
the DAS aiid associated equipment. This installation as described in the Permit Drawings do not impact
the existing fire protection and life safcty systems."I'his includes no impact on the access to or egress
from the�,agle Bahn Gondola(Lift 19).
