Mondragon Via email imondragonCavailgov.com Dear Mr. Mondragon: The construction of the repairs to the retaining wall at 805 Potato Patch Drive is complete. I made two observations of the construction, and inspectors from CTL/Thompson made eight inspections of the subgrade preparation and wall construction. There were a few alterations made to the design during the construction process, due to exposed existing conditions that differed somewhat from the condition assumed during design. Some construction product substitutions were also approved by me. At completion the construction, to the best of my knowledge, complies with the intent of the design. I have enclosed for your file the reports by CTL /Thompson and by me, a memo summarizing product approvals, and a copy of the drawing with the pertinent revisions marked in red. Sincerely yours, J. Conditions: 65 deg F, clear, light breeze Report by: Jim Harris Present: Frank Payne, Beck Building Co. Distribution: All present plus Pedro Cerisola, Mark Mueller STATUS: The reconstruction of the existing Phase I wall veneer was complete in the structural sense. The remaining work includes control of surface water at the top of the Phase II wall, topsoil at the top of the entire wall, replacement of driveway pavers, and staining the face of the wall. OBSERVATIONS, DISCUSSION, AND DIRECTIONS: 1. The new grate had been placed at the top of one of the existing vertical drains above the Phase II wall. The drain grate configuration was satisfactory. ACTION: I recommended that Frank wrap the existing openings in the sidewall of the drains with a filter fabric (the fabric on site is satisfactory) prior to placing the final flow fill layer to direct the water to the drains. 2. Frank requested approval to make the west end of the flow fill a high point (effectively a dam) to limit the amount of water that would cascade down the steeply sloping backfill where the wall turns to the south. I concurred. 3. Frank has discussed the covering over the new flowfill with a waterproofing subcontractor, who may suggest a liquid applied membrane in lieu of the 60 mil plastic used at the subterranean drain. I requested that a product specification be sent for my review before making the change; I expect that a liquid applied product will be satisfactory. ACTION: Submit the proposed alternative membrane product above the Phase II wall. 4. The concrete backfill at the easternmost end of the wall has an irregular surface that traps water in some locations. ACTION: Remove the high spots in the concrete and then cover with flowfill that slopes downward to the west, so that excess surface water drains into the gravel backfill and then eventually to the buried drain line. James Robert Harris, P.E., S.E., Ph.D., NAE Gene R. Stevens, P.E., S.E. G. Brent Norris, P.E. Frederick R. Rutz, P.E., Ph.D. Kenneth W. Cobb, P.E., S.E. Donald C. Carroll. P.E. J.R. HARRIS & COMPANY STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS Cerisola Retaining Wall October 7, 2013 page 2 5. The gravel backfill over the portion of the new drain lines at the base of the Phase II wall had been placed and compacted. The tubes for the snow melt system were exposed, as was the edge of the welded wire fabric in the existing sand bed. ACTION: Cover the gravel along the drain with the filter fabric before placing the sand bed for the driveway pavers. It is not necessary to place new welded wire fabric in the sand bed for this portion of the driveway, except where it is desired to use the wire to maintain the position of the heating tubes. The sharp ends of the existing wires should be cut where they could rub on the heating tubes. 6. The preparation for staining the block was discussed. Frank will have a specialty subcontractor look at the condition to decide if pressure washing is necessary; it may take a long time for the wall to adequately dry if pressure washing is employed. 7. Frank inquired about a completion letter and an updated drawing. ACTION: Harris will prepare a completion letter to Pedro Cerisola with copies to Frank and to the Town of Vail. These reports and the CTL/Thompson reports will be attached, as will an as -built drawing. Compaction Test Report CLIENT J.R. J.R. R. Mondragon Via email lmondragonCW-vailgov.com Dear Mr.
