Tech Field Bulletin SYSTEM Technical Fie/d Bul►etin ... SF/USOR Issued: 8/98 Revised: l/04 To: Users of System Sensor smoke detec[ors From: Sys[ems Application Engineers Subject: Smoke deec[ors — 2- or 4-wire wmpatibility? Underwriters Laboratories (UL) reyuires dia[ smoke detecrors be compatible when used with a lis[ed fire alann control panel (FACP). This compa[ibility of smoke detectors with control panels is only an issue where 2-wire smoke de[ectors (power and signaling line circuit (SLC) on the same [wo condactors) are concemed. This is due to the iequ'uementa, res[rictions, and limita[ions of elec[rical cusen[ needed to cause the de[ectors to alazm and for [he control panel [o "see" that alarm. Detectors are not required ro be listed when they draw [heir power for operation from source other than the SLC. The National Fire Alam Code, NFPA 72, 2002 edition, states in chap[er 4: 4.4.2 Compatibility. All fire detection devices that receive their power from the initiating device circuit or signaling line circuit of a fire alarm controt unit shall be listed Por use with the control unit. Because of this, UL requirements do not include 4-wire smoke detectors or any notification devices. Notification devices must verify that the power and signal being supplied through the notification connections are sufficien[ for operation. Some notificntion devices require either coded or non-coded signals fur proper operation. The FACP manual should be consulted for specifications.
