HomeMy WebLinkAboutDRB130424 PROJECT NARRATIVE.pdf A �� � Z E H R E N A N D A S S O C I A T E S Thursday, September 12, 2013 Town of Vail Design Review Board Community Development Department 75 South Frontage F�ad Vail, Colorado 81657 Re: Gerald R Ford AmphitheaterPhase 2 Membersof the Design Review Board: On behalf of applicantsthe Vail Valley Foundation and the Town of Vail, Zehren and Associatesrespectfully submitsthisdesgn narrative for Phase 2 improvementsat the Ford Park Gerald R Ford Amphitheater. 1he project submitted spansa variety of improvements, including: ■ Central Betty Ford Way l�he project generally consstsof the landscape, paving and park enhancements between the amphitheatersloading dockand the existing Alpine Garden "schoolhouse" building. -fhe work will be coordinated with otheradjacent features including the Betty Ford Alpine Garden, existing ADA parking, the Nature Center Bridge, the Box Office queuing and service trucktumaround, 7he Public Plaza, lhe Ford Tribute and otherexisting Ford Parkprojects. lhe workwillalso include some landscape enhancementssouth of central Betty Ford Way between Gore Creek and Central Betty Ford Way in direct coordination with the Town of Vail. • 'ihe Public Plaza &The Public Plaza Cover l�he new public plaza includes a small stage, a sngle point of control/entry, coordination of special pavers, landscaping, site and planterwalls, security fencing and new entry steps. Thisscope also includesthe design of a new artisan entry gate between the existing Concessionsand Stage Left buildings, to replace the existing security gate. l�he Public Plaza Coverisa visual icon that identifiesthe amphitheaterentrance, one that isprimarily visible from areasimmediately adjacent to the entry itself. While providing improved protection forguestsduring inclement weather, the structure will also serve asa refuge from the intense alpine sun. l�hisneeded amenity, resultsin a space where only natural, ambient light istransmitted through the tensile membrane to the area below. These include removal of the existing overhead beam above the entry and the supporting column and tensile superstructure above. Installation of new countertopsand copperpanels below are included. ■ The Ford Tribute A key element of Phase 2 isa landmark arrival space and tribute monument dedicated to displaying and celebrating the extensive contributionsof the Ford Family to the Vail Valley. -fhe location ispart of the Public Pla�. An artist and orspecial craftsman will need to be engaged aspart of the processof the approvalsand execution of the work, depending on the final direction forthe Tribute. Each of these projectsindividually and collectively meetsthe standardsand guidelinesfor review asenumerated in the Town Code.
