Town of Vail Information Kiosks
I. DESCRIPTION OF REQUEST

Architect
ure of the kiosk needs to fit into Vail (i.e. more alpine, organic)
Specify why the applicant chose the design company
III. APPLICABLE PLANNING DOCUMENTS
VAIL TOWN CODE
11-5-1: PURPOSE
[SIGNS]: The design guidelines and standards exist to provide direction for signs within the town of Vail that enhance local streetscapes and provide aesthetic consistency with both
the built and natural environment. The guidelines and standards are intended to encourage expression and creativity. The design guidelines make use of the word "should", to allow for
subjectivity and creativity, whereas the design standards make use of the word "shall", signifying strict interpretation and enforcement. (Ord. 19(2003) § 1)
11-9-1: EXEMT SIGNS (in
part): The following signs are exempt from the requirements of this code, but remain subject to the design standards and guidelines listed in section 11-5-1 of this title and the maintenance
requirements listed in section 11-11-3 of this title:
C. Government signs, including directional signs, to control traffic or for other regulatory purposes;
Staff believes the information
kiosk meets the purpose and intent of the sign regulations and that the kiosk is an exempt sign and therefore, may be backlit for readability.
THE VAIL VILLAGE URBAN DESIGN GUIDE PLAN
FAÇADE
MATERIALS (In part, Page 16)
Stucco, brick, wood and glass are the primary building materials found in the Village. Of the above materials, stucco is the most consistently used material.
Most of the buildings in the Village exhibit some stucco, and there are virtually no areas where stucco is entirely absent. It is intended to preserve the dominance of stucco by its
use in portions, at least, of all new facades.
ROOF FORMS, PITCH (In part, Page 13)
Roofs within the Village are typically gable in form and of moderate-to-low pitch. For visual consistency 3/12 – 6/12 [pitch] range should be
preserved.
IV. STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends approval, with conditions, of the information kiosk design. If the DRB chooses to approve the request, Staff recommends the following
conditions:
The applicant shall work with Cornerstone Kiosk to finalize construction and installation details for design # ____ [1-4].
The primary color(s) of the kiosk shall be ___________.
The
color(s) of the roof shall be ___________.
The first kiosk shall be installed north of the covered bridge, across (Meadow Drive) from the transportation center, near the location of
the current ‘happenings’ display on the light post.
The first kiosk shall replace the ‘happenings’ display on the light post located north of the covered bridge, across (Meadow Drive)
from the transportation center.
If the Board chooses to approve the request, Staff recommends that the Board make the following finding:
That the kiosks shall be considered ‘exempt’
signs under Section 11-9-1 and therefore are allowed to be back-lit for the purpose of readability.
