RE: Vail's Front Door, Vail, CO
New Chimney Cap at Boiler Flue Chase
Justin,
It is our understanding that there is excessive ice build -up at the existing boiler flue chimney cap.
This is being caused by the fact that the cap is hemi cylindrical in shape (inverted U) and is
thereby trapping flue gases. The trapped flue gases are causing ice build -up and also corroding
the copper metal. See page 2 below for image.
It is our understanding that Skyline is proposing to replace this chimney cap at the boiler chase
with a new open top type chimney cap, as shown on page 3 below. The cap will be made
entirely of steel and will be powder coated for corrosion resistance. The proposed chimney cap
will be consistent with the other chimney caps on the building, and per the original architectural
drawings (sheet A525).
Rader Engineering approves of the proposed design. It has been our experience that an open top
chimney cap is the best method for concealing power vented boiler flues, while also allowing the
flue gases to be discharged straight vertically unimpeded into the atmosphere. We recommend
that the existing flues be extended vertically so that the top of the flue pipes are 3" higher than
the top of the chimney cap structure.
Please call with any questions.
Sincerely,
L/
