It has the beauty of a wood shake with less cost and better performance. It is designed to resist blow off in high wind conditions up to 110-mph with normal installation and 130-mph with special installation. Presidential Shake, with its unique sculptured tab, provides the distinct styling, depth and dimension of wood shakes. It is constructed using two laminated layers of the industry's strongest, most durable roofing materials. It is designed to resist blow off in high wind conditions up to 110-mph with normal installation and 130-mph with special installation. Presidential Shake TL AR (Algae Resistant)and Presidential Shake AR (Algae Resistant) shingles help protect against staining or discoloration caused by algae. Colors: Please refer to the product brochure or CertainTeed website for the colors available in your region. Limitations: It is recommended to apply these shingles at slopes of 4"per foot slope and greater in order to achieve optimum appearance. Low slope applications (2" up to 4" per foot)of Presidential TL shingles require CertainTeed's WinterGuard TM Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment, or its equivalent meeting ASTM D1970, be applied to the entire deck surface, according to application instructions provided with the product and on the shingle package. For low slope applications of Presidential Shake shingles apply CertainTeed WinterGuard Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment or its equivalent, or two layers of 36" wide felt shingle underlayment (Roofers' Select High-Performance Underlayment or product meeting ASTM D4869 or ASTM D6757) lapped 19", over entire deck according to the application instructions provided with the product. In areas where icing along the eaves can cause the back-up of water(all slopes), apply WinterGuard, or its equivalent, according to application instructions provided with the product and on the shingle package. On slopes greater than 21" per foot, use nine nails and apply 1" diameter spots of asphalt roofing cement (ASTM D4586 Type II) under each shingle tab, according to application instructions provided with the product and the shingle package. Product Composition: Presidential Shake TL and Presidential Shake shingles are composed of a fiber glass mat base. Ceramic-coated mineral granules are tightly embedded in carefully refined, water- resistant asphalt. The laminated pieces are firmly adhered in a special tough asphaltic cement. The following is a general summary of the installation methods. NOTE - Refer to application instructions supplied with the shingles for further information and application procedure. IMPORTANT NOTE- Presidential Starter or an approved alternative starter system must be used for the two-layered starter course. Roof Deck Requirements: Apply shingles to minimum 3/8" thick plywood, minimum 7/16"thick non- veneer, or minimum 1"thick(nominal)wood decks. The plywood or non-veneer decks must comply with the specifications of APA—The Engineered Wood Association. Ventilation: Provisions for ventilation should meet or exceed current HUD standards. To best ensure adequate ventilation, use a combination of continuous ridge ventilation (using Ridge FilterVent or Ridge Filter ShingleVent Il, manufactured by Air Vent Inc, or a comparable product with an external baffle) and balanced soffit venting. Valleys: Open valley is recommended. Valley liner must be applied before shingles. It must be minimum 18"wide 16 oz. copper, or its equivalent, installed over 36"wide self-adhering CertainTeed WinterGuard Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment (apply directly to deck), or applied over 36"wide mineral surfaced roll roofing. After WinterGuard has been applied, install the 16-oz. copper centered in the valley. For application of copper valley, use copper cleats or large head copper nails. Closed-Cut valley application is an acceptable alternate, provided the shingles are not damaged while being formed into place. Refer to the application instructions on the shingle packaging for further information. Underlayment: On slopes 4" per foot or greater, CertainTeed recommends one layer of DiamondDeck TM Synthetic Underlayment, or Roofers' SelectTm High-Performance shingle underlayment, or shingle underlayment meeting ASTM D226, D4869 or ASTM D6757. Always ensure sufficient deck ventilation, and take particular care when DiamondDeck or other synthetic underlayment is installed. For UL fire rating, underlayment may be required. Corrosion-resistant drip edge is recommended and should be placed over the underlayment at the rake and beneath the underlayment at the eaves. Follow manufacturer's application instructions. On low slopes (2" up to 4" per foot), one layer of CertainTeed's WinterGuard Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment(or equivalent meeting ASTM D1970)or two layers of 36"wide felt shingle underlayment (Roofers' Select High-Performance Underlayment or product meeting ASTM D226, D4869 or ASTM D6757) lapped 19" must be applied over the entire roof, ensure sufficient deck ventilation. When DiamondDeck or other synthetic underlayment is installed, weather-lap at least 20" and ensure sufficient deck ventilation. When WinterGuard is applied to the rake area, the drip edge may be installed under or over WinterGuard. At the eave, when WinterGuard does not overlap the gutter or fascia, the drip edge should be installed under WinterGuard. When WinterGuard overlaps the fascia or gutter, the drip edge or other metal must be installed over it. Follow manufacturer's application instructions. Technical Data Sheet(Continued) Presidential Shingles Page 3 of 3 Standard Fastening: For slopes of 21" per foot or less, five fasteners are required per shingle. Nails are required for Presidential TL. Fasteners are to be located on the nailing guide line, 9" above the lowermost edge of the shingle, two located 1 to 1-1/2" in from each edge and the remaining three evenly spaced between (about 9"to 10" apart). Fasteners must be of sufficient length to penetrate into the deck 3/4" into or through the thickness of the decking, whichever is less. Nails are to be 11- or 12-gauge, corrosion-resistant roofing nails with 3/8" heads. Steep Slope Fastening: For roof slopes greater than 21" per foot, nine fasteners are required per shingle. Nails are required for Presidential TL. After applying 5 nails in nailing guideline, apply 4 nails 1" above tab cutouts, making certain tabs of overlying shingle covers nails. Also at slopes greater than 21" per foot, apply 1"diameter spots of asphalt roofing cement(ASTM D4586 Type II) under each shingle tab, according to application instructions provided for the product and on the shingle package. Standard Application: Presidential Starter or an approved alternative starter system must be used for the two-layered starter course. The required application method is the 5" & 15" Offset, Four-Course, Diagonal Method found on each bundle of shingles. These shingles may be used for new construction or for reroofing over one layer of old shingles, but due to the heavy weight of this shingle, it is important to determine that the roof deck system is satisfactory for the application of these shingles. Refer to product wrap for detailed reroofing limitations. All shingles on the finished roof must be applied with five fasteners. Always cut shingles from the left edge. Flashing: Use corrosion-resistant metal flashing. Please refer to illustration on our shingle packaging. Hips and Ridges: Use Cedar Crest or Mountain Ridge shingles of a like color for capping the hips and ridges. MAINTENANCE Presidential Shake TL and Presidential Shake shingles require virtually no maintenance when installed according to manufacturer's application instructions. However, to protect the investment, any roof should be routinely inspected at least once a year. Older roofs should be looked at more frequently. WARRANTY Presidential Shake and Presidential Shake TL carry a lifetime limited transferable warranty against manufacturing defects for the original homeowner. In addition, both Presidential Shake TL and Presidential Shake shingles also carry10-years of SureStartTM Protection. Rev.07/2012 Technical Data Sheet CertainTeed Cml WinterGuardTm HT Waterproofing Underlayment Quality made curtain.Satisfactiongnaranteed.- WinterGuard TM Sand Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment WinterGuardTm Granular Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment NOTE: Reference to "WinterGuard"without specific reference to HT, Sand or Granular relates to all three products. PRODUCT INFORMATION WinterGuard products are most commonly used in critical areas such as roof eaves, valleys, and as a waterproofing underlayment for low-slope shingle, metal, slate, and mechanically-fastened tile roofing applications. WinterGuard HT(High Tack, High Temperature) is an advanced waterproofing underlayment for shingle, metal, slate and tile roofs. It is specially formulated to resist high roof temperatures under metal roofs. WinterGuard Sand and Granular underlayments are designed for use on roof decks as a waterproofing barrier beneath shingle, slate and tile roofs to prevent leakage due to water back-up from ice dams or wind-driven rain. Limitations: • Do not expose WinterGuard permanently to sunlight. Cover WinterGuard as soon as possible with a permanent roof surface. The maximum exposure time is six (6) months. • WinterGuard will not adhere to wet or cold surfaces. Refer to instructions on the carton for additional nailing and sealing instructions. • Do not apply WinterGuard over shingles or underlayment of any sort. • WinterGuard is a vapor barrier. Therefore, if WinterGuard is applied over a majority of the roof deck, proper deck ventilation must be provided. • If WinterGuard must contact sealants or cements, use solvent-based products sparingly, following manufacturer's instructions carefully. Excessive use of solvent-based adhesives can damage WinterGuard's polymer modified asphalt coating. Do not use silicone-based sealants, as they do not maintain adequate long-term adhesion to asphalt. • Low-slope application: WinterGuard HT can be applied beneath shingles, slate and mechanically- fastened tile to acceptable decks with slopes of 2"/12"or greater and beneath metal to acceptable decks with slopes of 0.5"/12" or greater. WinterGuard Sand and Granular products can be applied beneath shingles, slate and mechanically-fastened tile to acceptable roof decks with slopes of 2"/12"or greater. See grid below for minimum allowable slopes. • WinterGuard HT is specially designed to withstand temperatures up to 250°F. • WinterGuard may become slippery under certain weather conditions. When this occurs, avoid walking or crawling on the product. WinterGuard is available in three finishes: sand, granular, and film. WinterGuard Sand and Granular have top surfaces consisting of mineral matter(sand or granules)to enhance traction during application. WinterGuard HT has a tough, tear resistant film on its top surface that won't scratch metal roofing applied over it. The adhesive bottom surface of all WinterGuard products is protected with a disposable silicone-coated release film, which is split longitudinally down the middle for easier application. Deck Preparation: Clean the roof deck until it is free of dirt, dust, nails, and other materials. Providing a clean, dry and smooth deck surface is important to assure proper adhesion of the WinterGuard to the deck. Before application to existing roofs, remove all roofing materials including the roofing felt and nails. Priming: Priming is not necessary for clean and dry wood decks. Concrete and masonry deck surfaces and oily metal surfaces require priming with an asphalt primer meeting ASTM D 41 standards, such as CertainTeed's FlintPrime TM, or equivalent. Before WinterGuard is applied, primer must be dry. Follow manufacturer's instructions for the application of the primer. Membrane Application at the Eaves for Ice Dam Protection: WinterGuard can be applied in any length convenient to the applicator. First, align unrolled material with lower edge of roof and hold in place. Lift starting end of material approximately 1 foot, peel back and fold under at least 6 inches of both sheets of protective release film. Carefully return the exposed adhesive surface to the deck and press firmly in place. If, at lower temperatures, the material does not adhere immediately, tack it in place with roofing nails or staples. Reroll material from the other end until the peeled and folded back film is exposed. Beginning with the folded back film, peel both sheets of the remaining film from the roll, pulling parallel to the eave. Be sure all material lays flat without wrinkling and is well adhered. Alternatively, apply by the "peel and flop" method, utilizing the two-piece split-sheet release film feature to adhere longitudinal halves, one at a time. It is best to cut the product into manageable lengths of about 10 feet when applying WinterGuard by this method. Applying WinterGuard is strongly recommended wherever there is a possibility of ice build-up. Many building codes require that the upper edge of ice dam protection extend no less than 24 inches beyond the interior wall line of the exterior walls. In areas of severe icing, it is recommended that WinterGuard be applied at least up to the highest water level expected to occur from ice dams. In order to assure waterproofing, overlap all membrane side laps and end laps per Technical Data table above, press all overlaps firmly with a membrane seam roller, and offset end laps at least 2 feet from course to course. Technical Data Sheet(Continued) WinterGuard Series Page 3 of 3 Application of Drip Edge at Rakes and Eaves: At the rake, the drip edge may be installed under or over WinterGuard. At the eaves, when the WinterGuard does not overlap the gutter or fascia, the drip edge should be installed under WinterGuard. At the rake or eaves, when WinterGuard overlaps the gutter or fascia, drip edge or other metal must be installed over the WinterGuard to protect it against damage from exposure. Low-Slope Shingle, Metal, Shake, or Tile Application: WinterGuard can be applied under these roofing materials to provide protection against the infiltration of wind-driven rain on low-slope applications. If applied to cover the entire roof, ensure sufficient ventilation to avoid condensation. WinterGuard HT can be applied beneath shingles, slate and mechanically-fastened tile to acceptable decks with slopes of 2"/12"or greater and beneath metal to acceptable decks with slopes of 0.5"/12" or greater. WinterGuard Sand and Granular products can be applied beneath shingles, slate and mechanically-fastened tile to acceptable roof decks with slopes of 2"/12" or greater. Application at Valleys and Ridges: In the valleys, the width of the WinterGuard must be 36 inches minimum, and on the ridges, 12 inches minimum. Cut WinterGuard to convenient premeasured lengths (4 to 6 feet recommended). Peel off the release film and drape the sheet into place, allowing the membrane to locate and adhere in the valley centerline or ridge peak first, working outward toward the edges. In valleys, start the application at the low point and work upwards. To assure waterproofing, overlap all sheets 6 inches at lap joints. Do not use WinterGuard as a permanent weathering surface (such as in an open valley). MAINTENANCE WinterGuard requires no maintenance when installed according to manufacturer's application instructions. WARRANTY WinterGuard is warranted against manufacturing defects and to remain watertight for the same period as the warranty duration carried by the roofing product applied above it-up to a maximum of 50 years. For specific warranty details and limitations, refer to the warranty itself.
