O. Box 2670 Vail, Colorado 81658 McharlesI kmcpsvall.com Job No. 111 343A Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Pool and Pool Equipment Vault, Snow Forest Chalet, Lot 9, Block 7, Filing 1, Vail Village, 186 Forest Road, Vail, Colorado Dear Mike: As requested by the excavator, Chris Fedrizzi, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavation at the subject site on November 10, 2011 to evaluate the materials exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The services were performed part of our agreement for professional engineering services to Maximum Comfort Pool and Spa, dated October 24, 2011. The pool will be reinforced gunnite and be located to the east of the residence. The pool will have an infinity edge. There will also be a below ground equipment/slash mechanical vault for the pool located to the west of the pool. The structures have been designed to be supported on spread footings assuming an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000psf. There will also be 4 micro-piles below the northern portion of the pool for additional foundation support. At the time of our site visit, the foundation excavation was essentially complete and had been cut in two levels from about 3 to 10 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The step in grade between the two levels was about I foot. The materials exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of sandstone/siltstone bedrock that was weathered and fractured in the shallower cuts areas becoming hard and less fractured in the deeper cut areas. Results of swell-consolidation testing performed on a sample of the weathered sandstone/siltstone taken from the site, shown on Figure 1, indicate the materials are • slightly to moderately compressible under conditions of loading and wetting. The sample Parker 303-841-7119 • Colorado Springs 719-633-5562 • Silverthorne 970-468-1989 Maximum Comfort Pool and Spa November 16, 2011 Page 2 • may have been partly disturbed due to the fractured condition. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the bedrock materials were slightly moist to moist. The micro-piles had been previously installed prior to our site visit. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed bedrock materials designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 2,000 psf can be used for support of the proposed pool and equipment vault structures. There could be some differential settlement between the spread footing and micro-pile foundation areas that should be considered in the design. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. All fill and loose disturbed materials in footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed weathered to hard bedrock materials. The bearing material should be protected against frost and concrete should not be placed on frozen subgrade. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should also be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at • least 55 pcf for on-site soil and well broken bedrock materials as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the below grade walls. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils and well broken bedrock materials or suitable imported granular soils compacted to at least 95%of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the materials exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This study is based on the assumption that materials beneath the footings have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter. Our services do not include determining the presence, prevention or possibility of mold or other biological contaminants (MOBC) developing in the future. If the client is • Job No. 111 343A GeCPtech Maximum Comfort Pool and Spa November 16, 2011 Page 3 concerned about MOBC, then a professional in this special field of practice should be consulted.
