Mantell, Professor, Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota Date: Febnlary 20, 2012 Overview: Mechanical tests were performed on the Snow Trapper to deteimine the force at which the snow <uard beins to fail. Samples were mounted in a specially designed test fixture (Figure 1) such tllat a compressive load was applied to the circular snow retaining plate, referred to as the "flanQe."The load was applied at a rate of 0.1 in/min and the samples were loaded until the cross head displacement was 1 inch. The specimens were 2.4 inches wide, with the strap length cut to six (6) inches. Three .025 diameter holes were drilled in the strap, approximately 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 inches fiom the flange surface. These holes were used to inount the sample to the test fixure. Figure 2 shows a snow trapper sample that has been modified for testing. Results (SnowTrapper): Test data for SnowTrapper snow guards fabricated from copper and aluminum are listed in Table 1. Regardless of the materill, the snow guards initially failed at the toggle locks that fasten the flange to the strap. This initial failure typically occured at an average load of 536 lbs for SnowTi-appercopper snow guards and 452 lbs for SnowTrapper aluminum snow guards. _.............................................................................................................................................................................................................._..............................................................................................
