Please note the following comments. Specific section number as identified in the manual will be followed by a relevant code section from the International Fire Code, 2012 ed. (IFC).
5303.5.2
Physical protection. Compressed gas containers, cylinders, tanks and systems which could be exposed to physical damage shall be protected. Guard posts or other approved means shall be
provided to protect compressed gas containers, cylinders, tanks and systems indoors and outdoors from vehicular damage and shall comply with Section 312.
5303.5.3 Securing compressed
gas containers, cylinders and tanks. Compressed gas containers, cylinders and tanks shall be secured to prevent falling caused by contact, vibration or seismic activity. Securing of
compressed gas containers, cylinders and tanks shall be by one of the following methods:
Securing containers, cylinders and tanks to a fixed object with one or more restraints.
2.
Securing containers, cylinders and tanks on a cart or other mobile device designed for the movement of compressed gas containers, cylinders or tanks.
3. Nesting of compressed gas containers,
cylinders and tanks at container filling or servicing facilities or in seller’s warehouses not accessible to the public. Nesting shall be allowed provided the nested containers, cylinders
or tanks, if dislodged, do not obstruct the required means of egress.
4. Securing of compressed gas containers, cylinders and tanks to or within a rack, framework, cabinet or similar assembly designed for such use.
5303.6 Valve protection. Compressed
gas container, cylinder and tank valves shall be protected from physical damage accordance with Sections 5303.6.1 and 5303.6.2.
5303.6.1 Compressed gas container, cylinder or tank
protective
caps or collars. Compressed gas containers, cylinders and tanks designed for protective caps, collars or other protective devices shall have the caps or devices in place except when
the containers, cylinders or tanks are in use or are being serviced or filled.
5303.6.2 Caps and plugs. Compressed gas containers, cylinders and tanks designed for valve protection
caps or other protective devices shall have the caps or devices attached. When outlet caps or plugs are installed, they shall be in place.
Exception: Compressed gas containers, cylinders
or tanks in use, being serviced or being filled.
Storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids shall comply with the following:
3305.3 Housekeeping. Flammable and combustible
liquid storage areas shall be maintained clear of combustible vegetation and waste materials. Such storage areas shall not be used for the storage of combustible materials.
3305.4
Precautions against fire. Sources of ignition and smoking shall be prohibited in flammable and combustible liquid storage areas. Signs shall be posted in accordance with section 310.
5303.5.2

5303.6.1 Compressed gas container, cylinder or tank
protective caps
or collars. Compressed gas containers, cylinders and tanks designed for protective caps, collars or other protective devices shall have the caps or devices in place except when the containers,
cylinders or tanks are in use or are being serviced or filled.
5303.6.2 Caps and plugs. Compressed gas containers, cylinders and tanks designed for valve protection caps or other protective
devices shall have the caps or devices attached. When outlet caps or plugs are installed, they shall be in place.
Exception: Compressed gas containers, cylinders or tanks in use, being serviced or being filled.
6110.1 Temporarily out of service. LP-gas containers
whose use has been temporarily
discontinued shall comply with all of the following:
1. Be disconnected from appliance piping.
2. Have LP-gas container outlets, except relief valves,
closed or plugged.
3. Be positioned
with the relief valve in direct communication
with the LP-gas container vapor space.
5704.3 Container and portable tank storage. Storage of flammable and combustible liquids in closed
containers that do not exceed 60 gallons in individual capacity, and limited transfers thereto, shall comply with sections 5704.3.1 through 5704.3.8.5.
5704.3.1.1 Approved containers.
Only approved containers and portable tanks shall be used.
5704.3.4.4.1 Liquids for maintenance and operation of equipment. In all occupancies, quantities of flammable and combustible
liquids in excess of 10 gallons used for maintenance purposes and the operation of equipment shall be stored in liquid storage cabinets in accordance with Section 5704.3.2. Quantities
not exceeding 10 gallons are allowed to be stored outside of a cabinet when in approved containers located in private garages or other approved locations.
5704.3.3.4 Empty containers
of portable tank storage. The storage of empty tanks and containers previously used for the storage of flammable or combustible liquids, unless free from
explosive vapors shall be stored as required for filled containers and portable tanks. Portable tanks and containers, when emptied, shall have the covers or plugs immediately replaced
in openings.
Section 603.9 Gas meters Above-ground gas meters, regulators and piping subject to damage shall be protected by a barrier complying with section 312 or otherwise protected
in an approved manner.
Section 312.3 Other barriers Physical barriers shall be a minimum of 36 inches in height and shall resist a force of 12,000 pounds applied 36 inches above the
adjacent grade surface.
Section 3303.1 Listed Temporary heating devices shall be listed and labeled in accordance with the International Mechanical code or the International Fuel Gas
Code. Installation, maintenance and use of temporary heating devices shall be in accordance with the terms of the listing.
Section 3303.5 Installation (Temporary heating) Clearance
to combustibles from temporary heating devices shall be maintained in accordance with the labeled equipment. When in operation, temporary heating devices shall be fixed in place and
protected from damage, dislodgement, or overturning in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Section 3304.7 Electrical. Temporary wiring for electrical power and lighting
installations used in connection with the construction, alteration or demolition of buildings, structures, equipment or similar activities shall comply with NFPA 70.
Section 605.3
Working space and clearance. A working space of not less than 30 inches in width, 36 inches in depth and 78 inches in height shall be provided in front of electrical service equipment.
Where the electrical service equipment is
wider than 30 inches, the working space shall not be less than the width of the equipment. Nor storage of any material shall be located within the designated working space. (Or in
accordance with NFPA 70).
605.3.1 Labeling Doors into electrical control panel rooms shall be marked with a plainly visible and legible sign stating ELECTRICAL ROOM or similar approved
wording. The disconnecting means for each service, feeder or branch circuit originating on a switchboard or panel board shall be legibly and durably marked to indicate its purpose unless
such purpose is clearly evident.
605.2 Ampacity The ampacity of the extension cords shall not be less than the rated capacity of the portable appliance supplied by the cord.
605.5.3
Maintenance Extension cords shall be maintained in good condition without splices, deterioration or damage.
605.9.1 Attachment to structures (temporary wiring). Temporary wiring attached
to a structure shall be attached in an approved manner.*
* Temporary wiring shall be installed in such a manner that it is not a trip or choke hazard. Temporary wiring shall not at
any time be suspended from fire sprinkler piping or associated appurtenances.
3315.1 Portable fire extinguishers – Where required. Structures, alteration or demolitions shall be provided
with not less than one approved portable fire extinguisher in accordance with section 906 and sized not less than ordinary hazard as follows:*
1. At each stairway on all floor levels
where combustible materials have accumulated.
2. In every storage and construction shed.
3. Additional fire extinguishers shall be provided where hazards exist including to, the storage and use of flammable and combustible liquids.

906.5 Conspicuous location. Portable fire extinguishers shall be located in conspicuous locations where they are readily accessible and immediately available for use.
These locations shall be along normal paths of travel, unless the fire code official determines that the hazard posed indicates the need for placement away from normal paths of travel.
906.6
Unobstructed and unobscured. Portable fire extinguishers shall not be obstructed or obscured from view. In rooms or areas in which visual obstruction cannot be completely avoided,
means shall be provided to indicate the locations of extinguishers.
Additional Comments:
3304.1 Smoking. Smoking shall be prohibited except in approved areas. Signs shall be posted
in accordance with section 310. In approved areas where smoking is permitted, proper disposal means shall be provided.*
* Show smoking areas on site plan when site plans finalized.
308.1.2
Throwing or placing sources of ignition. No person shall throw or place, or cause to be thrown or placed, a lighted match, cigar, cigarette, matches, or other flaming or glowing substance
or object on any surface or article where it can cause an unwanted fire.
310.3 “No Smoking” signs. The fire code official is authorized to order the posting of “No Smoking” signs in
a conspicuous location in each structure or location in which smoking is prohibited. The content, lettering, size, color and location of required “No Smoking” signs shall be approved.
310.5
Compliance with “No Smoking” signs. Smoking shall not be permitted nor shall a person smoke, throw or deposit any lighted or smoldering substance in any place where “No Smoking” signs
are posted.
310.7 Burning objects. Lighted matches, cigarettes, cigars or other burning object shall not be discarded in such a manner that could cause ignition of other combustible material.
Hot
Work/Cutting and Welding.
3304.6 Cutting and welding. Operations involving the use of cutting and welding shall be done in accordance with chapter 35.
3501.2 Permits. Permits shall
be required as set forth in section 105.6.
105.6.23 Hot work operations. An operational permit is required for hot work including, but not limited to: (5) Application of roof coverings
with the use of an open flame device.*
* Hot work areas shall be designated and shown on floor plans.
(6) When approved the fire code official shall issue a permit to carry out a hot
work program. This program allows approved personnel to regulate their facility’s hot work operations. The approved personnel shall be trained in fire safety aspects denoted in this
chapter and shall be responsible for issuing permits requiring compliance with the requirements found in chapter 35. These permits shall be issued only to their employees or hot work
operations under their supervision.
3503.5 Records. The individual responsible for the hot work are shall maintain “pre work check” reports in accordance with section 3504.3.1 Such
reports shall be maintained on the premises for a minimum of 48 hours after work is complete.
3504.2.1 Fire watch. A fire watch shall be provided during hot work activities and shall
continue for a minimum of 30 minutes after the conclusion of the work. The fire code official, or the responsible manager under a hot work program, is authorized
to extend the fire watch based on the hazards or work being performed.
3504.2.3 Duties. Individuals designated to fire watch duty shall have fire-extinguishing equipment readily available
and shall be trained in the use of such equipment. Individuals assigned to fire watch duty shall be responsible for extinguishing spot fires and communicating an alarm.
3504.2.4 Fire
training. The individuals responsible for performing the hot work and individuals responsible for providing the fire watch shall be trained in the use of portable fire extinguishers.
3504.2.6
Fire extinguisher. A minimum of one portable fire extinguisher complying with Section 906 and with a minimum 3A:40B:C rating shall be readily accessible within 30 feet (9144 mm) of the
location where hot work is performed.
Fire Department Access
3310.1 Required access. Approved vehicle access for fire fighting shall be provided to all construction or demolition
sites. Vehicle access shall be provided to within 100 feet (30 480 mm) of temporary or permanent fire department connections. Vehicle access shall be provided by either temporary or
permanent roads, capable of supporting vehicle loading under all weather conditions. Vehicle access shall be maintained until permanent fire apparatus access roads are available.
3310.2
Key boxes. Key boxes shall be provided as required by Chapter 5.** Key boxes shall be ordered from the Knox Company. Contact
VF&ES prior to ordering. Key box location during construction shall be at main construction trailer/office.
3311 Means of egress. Stairways required. Where a building has been constructed
to a building height of 50 feet (15 240 mm) or four stories,
or where an existing building exceeding 50 feet (15 240 mm) in building height is altered, at least one temporary lighted
stairway shall be provided unless one or more of the permanent stairways are erected as the construction progresses.
3311.2 Maintenance. Required means of egress shall be maintained
during construction and demolition, remodeling or alterations and additions to any building.
Standpipes
3313.1 Where required. In buildings required to have standpipes by Section
905.3.1, not less than one standpipe shall be provided for use during construction. Such standpipes shall provided for use during construction. Such standpipes shall be installed when
the progress of construction is not more than 40 feet (12 192 mm) in height above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access. Such standpipe shall be provided with fire department
hose connections at accessible locations adjacent to usable stairs. Such standpipes shall be extended as construction progresses to within one floor of the highest point of construction
having secured decking or flooring.
