A9.44B PLEASE NOTE IN DECEMBER OF 2011 BRUCE ZIVIC MET WITH MARTIN HAEBERLE TO DISCUSS MAKING MODIFICATIONS TO THE UNIT BALCONY RAILINGS. OUR MAIN THRUST OF THE MODIFICATION WAS TO IMPROVE THE SPACING BETWEEN THE VERTICAL RAILING FROM 6” CLEAR TO SOMETHING THAT MET OR EXCEEDED CODE REQUIREMENTS. DURING THIS MEETING IT WAS ALSO DISCUSSED THAT THE EXISTING RAILINGS WERE 39” AFF. I WANTED TO VERIFY THAT RAISING THE GUARDRAIL WAS NOT REQUIRED SINCE WE WERE NOT REMOVING THE EXISTING RAILINGS SYSTEM AND REPLACEMENT OF THE RAIL SYSTEM WAS MORE THAN OUR CURRENT BUDGET WOULD WITHSTAND.MARTIN AGREED THAT WE DID NOT NEED TO RAISE THE RAILING SYSTEM (3”) SINCE IT WAS NOT BEING REMOVED TO MAKE THE SPACING OF VERTICAL RAILS MODIFICATION. IN ADDITION HE THOUGHT THE CLOSER SPACING OF THE RAILS WOULD BE A WELCOMED SAFETY FEATURE. HOWEVER HE CAUTIONED THAT IT NEEDED TO BE KEPT IN MIND THAT IF DURING CONSTRUCTION THE EXISTING RAILING SYSTEM WAS INDEED REMOVED FOR ANY REASON THAT VAIL 21 WOULD NEED TO REPLACE IT TO MEET CURRENT CODES INCLUDING THE 42” HEIGHT.AS A RESULT THE PROJECT PROCEEDED WITH THE STRICT INSTRUCTION TO THE IRON FABRICATOR THAT THE RAILING SYSTEM SHALL NOT BE REMOVED FOR THE WORK.
