To whom it may concern:
It is the intent of the Vail Mountain School to install a removable retaining fence around our
existing athletic field. The purpose of the fence is to retain soccer and lacrosse balls from going into the
parking lot. in addition it will prevent unwanted activity on north frontage road and adjacent private
property. The fence will be installed in a way that it can be removed when it is not needed. Attached is
the description of the fence and materials as well as installation procedures. The map clearly shows
how much of the field will be surrounded by the retaining fence. I have also included a sample of the
#36 black nylon 1 % " square mesh that will be used. The 2" diameter poles used will extend 10' up
from the existing grade and will have a black powder coat finish on them to be as discrete as possible.

If the run is not straight as shown in figure 1, but has a bend, the pole at the bend is referred to as a
"corner pole ". The "end" and "corner" poles are made of Schedule 80 Aluminum pipe for
increased strength at end and corner locations whereas the "inner" poles are made of Schedule 40
Aluminum pipe.
GROUND SLEEVE & POLE INSTALL
The 2" diameter pole BSS are inserted into a ground sleeve. Each ground sleeve comes with 3/8" x
3 -1/2" long hex bolt and 3/8" nyloc nut as shown in figure 2.

Figure 3 - Pole inside Ground Sleeve
1. Mark the locations of the ground sleeve on the field.
IMPORTANT: It is recommended that the distance between each pole should not exceed twenty
(20) feet to reduce sagging of the net
2. Excavate hole for footer and set a concrete form. Refer to local building codes for exact footer
dimensions, as local soil conditions will vary.
3. Center the ground sleeve in the form and secure it in a plumb and level position. The top of the
ground sleeve should be flush with the finished grade.
IMPORTANT: The length of the hex bolt should run parallel to the length of the net so that it will
line up accordingly with the slot at the bottom of the pole in figure 3.
4. Pour concrete foundation and allow concrete to fully cure.
2 of 7
5. Insert pole into the installed ground sleeve. The slot at the bottom of the pole should fit over the
hex bolt to lock the pole in place.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the "corner" and "end" poles are those made of Schedule 80 Aluminum
material which has a greater wall thickness than Schedule 40 aluminum "inner" poles. These
"corner" and "end" poles will be clearly labeled with a yellow sticker.
6. Repeat procedures for all ground sleeves and poles.
NET PREPARATION
Each run of a ball safety system has one (1) net and each net has the following hardware:

Figure 5 - Wire Rope Loop at End of Net
1. At one end of the wire rape, make a loop to tightly fit around the rope thimble.
2. Maintain the loop by clamping the wire rope with the two rope clips tightly so that the thimble
does not fall out as shown in figure 5.
3. Repeat steps I and 2 for the other end of the wire rope.
4. Using zip ties, fasten the wire rope to the bottom net binding making sure to weave the rope
through the square mesh of the net approximately every 12 -18 ". There are enough zip ties to fasten
them approximately every foot along the net. The wire rope should run the entire length of the net
and pulled taut.
5. Repeat the steps above to attach the wire rope to the top binding at the top of the net.
6. Once the net has both wire ropes zip tied to the top and bottom bindings of the net, the net is
ready for attachment to the poles.
POLE HARDWARE
Although the number of poles vary depending on the size of the field, the quantity and type of
hardware for each pole location is the same. The following table lists the hardware required at each
pole location.

pole.

1. Insert the net rings around the pole.
2. Select the second hole from the top of the pole and insert a closed eyebolt.
Tighten a hex nut onto the eyebolt at the backside of the pole and lock in place
by adding a high crown acorn nut. The first hole at the top of the pole is used
after the net stretches and the net needs to be raised. Repeat step 2 at the hole
locations shown in Detail C and D.
3. At the top and bottom of the pole, clip the spring hook around the closed
-1yebolt and the loop made with the wire rope and thimble. See Detail A and D.
5 of 7
4. Space the net rings equally along the pole as shown in Detail B and C. Maintain the net ring
locations by clipping the spring hook around the net ring and the square mesh of the net.
The "Alternate Net Height Location" shown in Detail C can be used instead of the holes at the top
of the pole if a lower final net height is desired.
"INNER" POLE LOCATION
Detail E
Detail G
Detail F
Installing the net at the inner pole location is the same as at the "end" pole location.
However, at the top and bottom of the pole, there will be no loop in the wire rope.
Simply clip the spring hook around the closed eyebolt, wire rope, and net binding
as seen in Detail E and G. "Inner" pole has half the number of net rings than an
"end" pole.

MAINTENANCE AND DISASSEMBLY OF SYSTEM
The ball safety system can easily be dismantled and stored if desired.
1. Simple unclip the spring hooks from the net.
2. Without removing the wire rope assembly (wire rope, thimble, rope clips, and zip ties) from
the net, roll up the net.
3. Remove the poles from the ground sleeves.
4. Insert the ground sleeve cap into the hole left behind by the removal of the pole from the
ground sleeve.

5. If desired, remove all pole hardware and store in single container.
6. Store the net, poles, and hardware in a dry environment.
