Subject: Obseivation of Excavation, Propased Eastern Site Retaining Wall, Wells
Residence, Lots 3 and 4, Block 5, Vail Village 7'' Filing, 1067 and I 119
Ptat-nigan, Vail, Calorado
Dear Shelly:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical observed the excavation
at the subject site on July 15 and 18, 2014 to evaluate the sails exposed for foundation
support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation
design are presented in this report. The services were perfonned in accordance with our
agreernent for professional engineerin; services to Tntegrated Landscape management,
dated July 14, 2014. We previously discussed the backfill conditions at the pool site for
the proposed construction and submitted our findings in a letter datf;d April 28, 2014, Job
No. I 14 083A.
The proposed construction is similar to that dicussed in our previois letter. Tlie subject
retaining wall will be located to the east of the swimming pool and south of the spa area.
The wall will be block construction with rock facing and about 4 feet exposed height.
The wall has been designed to be supported on a concrete spread footing foundation
assuming an allowable soil earing pressure of 2,000 ps£ The retaining wall will include
a planter area.
On July 15, we observed a backhoe pit (Pit 1) excavated in the area of the proposed
retaining wall. The pit exposed about 5 feet of minus 3/ incli size screened rock underlain
by relatively dense, clayey sandy gravel and cobbles that extended down to the pit deptll
of 6 feet. The results of a gradation analysis performecl on a sample of the clayey sandy
gravel with cobble soils (minus 5 inch fraction) obtained from the pit are presented on
Figure 1. No free water was encountered in the pit and the soils were moist to verynoist.
At t11e time ot our July 18 site visit, the foundation excavation for the wall was essentially
complete and had been cut in one level about 6 feet below the acljacf;nt surface grade.
The soils exposed in the bottom of tle excavation consisted of minus 3/ inch size
screened rock. It appeared there was about 1 to 2 feet of the screened rock at footing

subgrade elevation overlying the natural coarse granular soils. No ti•ee water was
encountered in the excavation and the soils were generally moist.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, sread footings placed on the limited depth of screened rock designed for an
allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf can be used for support of the proposed
retaining wa1L The footing shvuld be a minimum width of 24 inches. Prior to the footing
construction, the subgrade should be compacted with a vibratory or plate compactor. The
retainingall should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent
fluid unit weight of at least 45 pcf for screened rock backfill. We understand outlet for a
drain behind the wall is not possible due the existing facilities in the area and that the
existing screened rock in the area may have a drain outlet. The wall drain can be
eliminated with some risk of hydro-static pressure build-up behind the wall. Filter fabric
should be useci to separate the screened rock from soil backfill. Structurai fill placed
within deck slab areas can consist of the on-site soils or screened rock eompacted to at
least 95% of standard Proctor density(SPD} at a moisture content near optimum.
Backfill placed araund the structure should be compacted to at least 90% SPD and the
surface graded ta prevent ponding near the structures.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based o our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to
evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This
study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better
support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than
indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In
order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conciitions below the
excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by additional
subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
If you have any questions or need fiarther assistance, please call our office.
Sincerely,
HEPWORTH —PA WJ,Q`,K1, `aoGjICAL, INC.
