Dear Mr. Corbin:
We understand that the support posts of the decks of the Timber Ridge Apartments are being
replaced. Additionally, loads for the replacement posts will be higher than the original loads;
therefore, we understand there is a concern about the magnitude of the allowable bearing
capacity since no geotechnical report appears to be available. In an effort to evaluate the
allowable bearing capacity of the site soils, limited subsurface exploration and sampling was
performed.
As requested, a representative of Ground Engineering Consultants, Inc. (GROUND) arrived on-
site on September 3, 2014 to observe the excavation of two test holes and to obtain samples for
laboratory testing for the purpose of bearing capacity estimation. Test hole excavation was
performed by means of a client provided, gas powered, hand auger. Refusal conditions were
encountered at a depth of approximately 4 feet below grades in both test holes. Laboratory
results of the test hole cuttings indicated silty/clayey, gravelly sand (SC-SM)g soils to the refusal
depths of 4 feet. The results of the laboratory testing are attached to this letter.
We understand the proposed footings will consist of circular pads located at a depth of 4 feet
below grade, which should be a sufficient depth for frost heave protection. At this depth, and
based on the available geotechnical data as well as necessary conservative assumptions, an
allowable bearing capacity of 4,800 psf appears feasible.
