Contractor's Construction Activities: Schofield had begun excavation at the east end of the site for
Building#1 and was within about 1 to 2 feet of foundation
grade at the time of our site visit. Two exploratory pot holes
had been excavated in the building area.
Equipment in Use: Two trackhoes, loader, tandem and end-dump haul trucks
_ __-- __._.__. .._ __ _. ___ _. __._...
HP Geotech's Site Activities: We observed the soil conditions within the excavation and the
two pot-holed locations at the north and south ends of the
excavation. Both of these locations showed similar profiles:
dark silty sand with gravel existing site fill underlain by a 4 to 8
inch thick sandy clay layer overlying silty sandy gravel glacial
moraine which will support the new building foundation.
Based on the explained final excavation grades, we expect the
completed excavation at the north end will be immediately
below the clay layer and at the south end will be well within the
natural silty sandy gravel. Sub-excavated areas below footings
wiil need to be re-established with suitable granular soil
compacted to 100% of standard Proctor density per the
recommendations in our subsoil study.
As requested, a large bulk sample of the overlying existing site
fill was obtained for standard Proctor and classification testing
to determine suitablity for use as structural backfill. Lab test
results are attached and indicate the material sampled is
suitable for structural backfill.

site activities. We also discussed our observations and
sampling with Tom Westhoff in our office.

HP Geotech's Site Activities: As requested by Matt Bribach with Gorman, we visited the site
and observed bearing conditions at the lower west end of the
Buiiding 2 footprint that were previously noted to be soft and
wet with ponded water. This area was still unstable with mud
and ponded water.
We also performed compaction testing in Building 1 underslab
backfill. Results were acceptable and are presented on Page 2.

Verbal Communication: We informed Matt of our observations. We recommended
removal of the wet areas down to firm and stable subgrade and
replacement with suitable granular material compacted to 100
percent compaction at near optimum moisture. We also
suggested that the blankets be removed during daylight hours
when conditions are favorable for drying.
