Exterior Alteration
General Information: This application is required for all proposals involving minor changes to buildings and site improve-
ments, such as roofing, painting, window additions, landscaping, fences, retaining walls, etc. Applicable Vail Town
Code sections can be found at www.vailqov.com under Vail Information -Town Code Online. All projects requiring de-
sign review must receive approval prior to submitting a building permit application. An application for Design Review
cannot be accepted until all required information is received by the Community Development Department, as outlined in
the submittal requirements. The project may also need to be reviewed by the Town Council and/or the Planning and
Environmental Commission. Design review approval expires one year from the date of approval, unless a building per-
mit is issued and construction commences.

However,there was only enough rail system to complete the front deck. In an attempt to be consistent
on the frant and rear cfecfc rait'rrigs, f s�arched out the manufaeturer crf that met�f frcint c�ec�C raii system
to replacQ the rear deck r�ai�ing with the same. When! icscat�d the company�purc�asQd more of the
rt���e��a�i�ec�r��fete�ny t�as� t�est�����e C}�s�.
I was�naware of the need to ask permission ta upgrade my railing from the broken and failing wooden
system ta the meta(system. f had assumed that since the materia(s were in my home when f purchased
it that I could repair the raiiing with a more secured and sustainable system.

Dear Mr. Willis,
My name is Joe Batcheller. I am a Planner for the Town of Vail. i am writing to inquire about a
possible zoning violation at your property located at the above address. It appears as though
the decks at your house were refurbished. It would be violation to do such work without design
review approval. We have no record of a Design Review Board application having been
submitted to allow for this work. Pursuant to Section 12-11-3, Design Approval, Vail Town Code,
a design review appiication shall be submitted and approved prior the exterior of a structure.
A. Scope: No person shall commence removal of vegetation, site preparation, building �
construction or demolition, dumping of material upon a site, sign erection, exterior
alteration or enlargement of an existing structure, paving, fencing or other improvements
of open space within the corporate limits of the town unless design approval has been
granted as prescribed in this chapter. The addition of plant materials to existing
landscaping, gardening and landscape maintenance shall be exempt from this provision.
8. Violation: It shall be a violation of this chapter and the building permit for any person to
commence, continue or complete work that has not received design approval as
prescribed in this chapter and/or is not in conformity with the plans approved and
authorized by the administrator and/or the design review board and the building official.
Please provide information regarding the refurbishment of the decks at 2763 Kinnikinnick Road.
A Design Review Board approval form or building permit would suffice. Please contact me by

If this work was done without authorization, the Town requests that you submit a completed
Design Review Board application no later than February 20, 2015. The Town can work with you
if this some additional time is necessary.
