In September of 1991, the Vail Town Council adopted an ordinance which restricts te construction and
use of open hearth fireplaces within municipal boundaries. Since that Ume the ordinance has
undergone numerous changes and revisions, striving for compromise, yet effectiveness in addressing
the air quality issue. Therefore the following criteria has been adopted:
. Construction of open hearth wood burning fireplaces is no longer permitted within Town of Vail
municipal boundaries.
r Dwellino Units - Each new dwelling unit may contain:
One (1) EPA Phase II certified solid fuel burning device and no more than ilro (2) gas appliances
(B vent)
OR
Two (2) gas log fireplaces and no mor€ than two (2) gas appliance fireplaces (B bent).
r Restricted Dwellino Units - Each new rcstricted dwelling unit may contain:
One (1) gas log fireplaqe and not more than one (1) gas appliance fireplace.
o Accommodation Units - Each new accommodation unit may contain:
One (1) gas log fireplaGe or one (1) gas appliance fireplace.
o If two or more separate dwelling units or accommodation units are combined to form one larger
unit, the combined unit may retain one woodburning fireplace (if one already exists) and no more
than 2 gas appliance fireplaces, or may convert up to two existing fircplaces to gas.
+ If during the course of a remodel an existing woodburning fireplace is altered or moved, the unit
must then comply with all provisions of the ordinance. That is, the fireplace must be converted to

First, I have determined that the existing triple 14" LW beam supporting the upper level and roof over the Kitchen
may be cut down to a tiple 9 W deep LVL.
Second I have insfiucted George of Nedbo Conshuction to frame the window openings in the west Dining Room
wall with riple 2 x 10 headers. These will rest on single 2 x 6 trimmers. A single king stud should be beside the
trhnnrers toward the ends ofthis wall, and double 2 x 6 king studs should be provided toward the middle of the wall.
Finally, I sm lttashing Sheets SK-l and SK-2, which relate to the foundation at the fiont of the garage. SK-l
describes the CMU revision for original foundation Secion B/S I . SK-2 describes the condition where the foundation
spans over the large boulder in this area.

If this permit requires a Town of Vail Fire Department Approval, Engineer's (Public Works)
review and approval, a Planning Department review or Health Department review, and a
review by the Building Depaftrhent, the estimated time for a total review may take up to
six (6) weeks.
All commercial (large or small) and all multi-family permib will have to follow the above
mentioned maximum requirements. Residential and small projects should take a lesser
amount of time. However, if residential or smaller projects impact the various above
mentioned departments with regard to necessary review, these projects may take up to

Attached is a mark-up of the main piers for the Bunours Residence. The 12 x 12 piers should go to 16 x
16 piers grouted solid with 4 #5 vertical and #8 dur-0-wall @ 15" o.c. The 10 x 18 piers should go to 8 x
16 piers grouted solid with 2 #5 vedical and & 8 dur-0-wall @ 16', o.c. euantity of #4 dornrels in the
footing should match the number of verticals in the pier. Only the 8 cells containing vertical steel in the
primary piers need to be grouted. The footing pads do not change. Rqarding the framing items, the
rafters should be2x L2 @ 16" o.c. and the ridgebeam should be a 5 1/8 x 18 gluelam. The cantlevered
joisb at the entry should be 2 x 10's @ 16" o.c.
