Town of Vail Mechanical Codes and Desiqn Griteria
You must obtain Design Review Board (DR.B) approval if any of the mechanical work will involve
ANY exterior w6rk This includes and is not limited to rcmoval and replacement of driveway snow
meft systems. Please Contact the Development Revieur Coordinator at 479-2128 for atlditional
information.
The Town of Vail has a{opted the 2003 International Mechanical Code and the 2003 International
Fuel Gas Code.
r All new construction within the Town of Vail is considercd to be of unusually tight aonstruction,
thus all mmbustion air is requircd to be drawn from outside the structure for mechanical
eguipment.
Town of Vail Fireplace Ordinance
In SepEmber of 1991, the Vail Town Council adopted an brdinance which restricts te construction and
use of open heanh firephces within municipal boundaries. Since that 6nte the ordinbne has
undergone numerous chanles and revisions, striving for compromise, yet effectiveness in addrcssing
l*re air quality issue. Therefiorc the following criteria has been adopted:
o Construction of open hearth wood burning fireplaces is no longer permitted within Town of Vail
municipal boundaries.
o Dweltino Units- Each new dwelling unit may ontain:
One (1) EPA Phase Il certified solid fuel burning device and no more than t$ro (2) gas applianes
(B vent)
OR
Turo (2) gas log fircplaes and no morc tlran hro (2) gas appliance fireplaces (B bent).
- Eadr new rcstricted dwelling unit may contain:
One (1) gas log fireplace and not morc than one (1) gas appliance fireplace.
Ammmodatioil Units - Each new aocommodation unit may ontain:
One (1) gas log filedace or one (1) gas appliance fireplace.
ff two or mor€ separate dwelling units or accommodation units ars combined to form one larger
unit, tfie oombined unit may rctain one woodburning fireplace (if one already exists) and no mote
than 2 gas appliance firdplaces, or may conyelt up to two existing fireplaces b gas.
