BUILDING PERMIT ISSUANCE TIME FRAME
If this permit requires a Town of Vail Fire Department Approval, Engineer's (Public Works)
review and approval, a Planning Department review or Health Department review, and a review
by the Building Department, the estimated time for a total review will take as long as three (3)
weeks.
All commercial (large or small) and all multi-family permits will have to follow the above
mentioned maximum requirements. Residential and small projects should take a lesser amount
of time. However, if residential or smaller projects impact the various above mentioned
depatments with regard to necessary review, these projects may also take three (3) weeks to
review and approve.
Every attempt will be made by this department to expedite this permit as soon as possible.

Subject: Existing deck analysis

Dear Bob:
At your request I have reviewed the framing of your existing west deck for the additional load of a hot
tub. This is a summary of my findings.
The hot tub that you wish to place on this deck weighs approximately 3360 pounds full and has base
dimensions of 7'€" x 6'-5". I understand that you wish to locate it next to the building at the far south
side of this deck.
The deck framing consists d 2 x 1O joists @ 16" on center. These are supported by double 2 x 1 2
beams at the west rim and at one cenfal bearing line under the deck. The beams aie supported by
rough sawn 6 x 6 posts, which bear on concrete piers. The deck joists are supported at the building
line by a double 2 x 10 ledger which is lag screwed to the wall studs with one lag screw at each stud.
The construction quality of this deck is good, and the framing is cunenily in good condition.
I have determined that the existing floor joists will be adequate to support the new tub load. I have also
found that the double 2 x 12 central beam will be overstressed by lhe new load and must be bolstered.
Furthermore, I determined that the single lag scranvs through he ledger into each stud will be
overstressed by the additional load.
The solutions to these issues are quite simple. One more 2 x 12 should be added to the west face of
the existing double 2 x 12 central beam. This 2 x 12 should be glued to the existing beam with pL4O0
and lagged with two rows of 72" diameter x 4" lags @ 16" on center. This member will not bear on the
exisiing posts; ii will run past the iace of the south and cenrrat posts, and rt will butt to trle north post.
One additional /2" diameter x 6" lag screw should be installed through the ledger into each wall stud,
which are located @ 16" on center. This will provide two lags inb each stud.
Cunently, the floor joists are not blocked over the central beam. I recommend that 2 x 10 blocking be
installed between these 2 x 10 joists over this beam. This will stifien the deck and eliminate the
possibility of rotation in the joists.
This completes my assessment of the deck. Once these additional elements are added, the deck will
be capable of supporting the new hot tub as well as he local design load. Feel free to give me a call if
