Dear Mr. Didier:
As requested, a represurtative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
excavation at the subject site on July 31,2007 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation
support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation
design me presented in this report. The services were performed in accordance with our
agreement for professional engineering services to Didier Construction Company, dated
July 24,2007.
The proposed residence will consist of a two story wood frame structure over a full
basement level. There will be a basement level below the garage. The basement floor
will be slab-on-grade. Spread footings sized for an allowable soil bearing pressure of

At the time of our visit to rhe sire, the sourh and westem p0FF|GF#0BY
completed. The garage/basement in the northeast portion of the residence had not been
excavated. We understand that a micropile shoring system will be used for this portion of
the excavation to retain the cut. The building excavation had been cut in multiple levels
from2 to l0 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The step down from the upper south
level to the main basement level was between 3 to 5% feet high. The soils exposed in the
bottom ofthe excavationconsisted ofslightly silty sandy gravel with cobbles. The results
of a gradation analysis performed on a sample of the gravels (minus 5 inch fraction)
obtained from the site are presented on Figure L No free water was encountered in the
excavation and the soils were slightly moist to moist.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature ofthe proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural gravel soil designed for an
allowable soil bearing pressure of2,000 psfshould be adequate for support ofthe
proposed residence. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous
walls and 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils in footing areas should be

removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural gravel soils.
Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing
elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and
bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length ofat least l0
feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should also be desiped to resist a
lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid rmit weight ofat least 50 pcffor on-site
granular soils, excluding oversized rock, as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should
be provided to prevent temporary buildup ofhydrostatic pressure behind the basement
and upper level walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. Structural fill placed within
floor slab are€rs can consist ofthe on-site soils compacted to at least 95% ofstandard
Proctor density at a moisture content near optimurr. Backfril piaced arounci the structure
should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least l0 feet of
the building. We should observe the remainder of the excavation when completed to
evaluate the bearing conditions.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the formdation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to
evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth offoundation influence. This
study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better
support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than
indicated in this report because ofpossible variations in the subsurface conditions. In
order to reveal the nature and extent ofvariations in the subsurface conditions below the
excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface
exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter. Our services do
not include determining the presence, prevention orpossibility of mold or other biological
contaminants (MOBC) developing in the funne. Ifthe client is concemed aboqt MOBC,
then a professional in this special field ofpractice should be consulted.
