RE. The proposed airlock at Campo de Fiori / A portion of Lot O, Block 5D, Vail Village '1st
Dear Silvia:
The Design Review Board conceptually reviewed the proposed airlock at Campo de Fiori
at their February 3rd meeting. The following were their comments:
1. The Design Review Board felt that the proposed airlock was inapproprraie ano
thev worrld be rrnatrle to approve anv sort of temporanr slructrrre.
2. The Design Review Board believed a permanent structure would be more
appropriate. The Design Review Board suggested that the architectural integrity
of the structure would be better maintained through the addition of a permanent
entry feature. lt was highly recommended that you involve an architect in the
project.
Staff has reviewed the file and determined that any sort of permanent addition would
likely be a minor SDD amendment process, depending on the scope of the proposal.
This is the same process required for the airlock addition. Permission will need to be
granted from the property owner.
Should you choose to pursue the Design Review Board's suggestions, please do not
hesitate to call me with any questions at 479-2369. I would be happy to meet with you
and discuss some possibilities for a permanent entry feature.

RE: The proposed airlock at Campo de Fiori / A portion of Lot O, Block 5D, Vait Village 1st
Dear Silvia.
The Design Review Board conceptually reviewed the proposed aidock at Campo de Fiori
at their January 19, 2000 meeting. The following were their comments and concerns:
1. The Design Review Board felt that the proposed airlock was inappropriate.
However, the representative at the meeting felt he could provide an example of a
similar treatment used in Aspen. They are willing to look at pictures and samples
of this similar treatment.
2. The Design Review Board believed a more permanent structure would be
appropriate. Suggestions included a combination of permanent strueture with the
ability to use more temporary materials when needed.
3. The Design Review Board suggested that the architectural integrity of the
structure would be better maintained through the addition of a permanent entry
feature. Staff would suggest looking at examples of entry features throughout
the Village. (Vail Sports at the old Hong Kong Building, the entry addition at the
Vista Bahn Building, the Swiss Haus at the Sonnenalp, Gore Range Mountain
Works, the Golden Bear, etc.)
Staff has reviewed the file and determined that any sort of permanent addition would
likely be a minor SDD amendment process, depending on the scope of the proposal.
This is the same process required for the airlock addition. Permission will need to be
granted from the property owner. I will do more investigation into the process for a
permanent structure and provide you with a letter at a later date, outlining the necessary
steps in the procedure.
In addition, as discussed on the phone, one of your signs is illegal. You are allowed a
combination of two signs. No approval has been granted for the sign attached to the
deck. Please remove this sign within 15 days of receipt of this letter. This serves as
{p**tuoruo
o
' written notice of the illegal sign. All signs erected in the Toram of Vail require a permit
' from the Community Development Department.
Your application will be reconsidered at the next Design Review Board meeting,
scheduled for February 2,2ooo. Please submit any new materials by Friday, January
28rh, so staff can have adequate time to review. Should you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact me at 479-2369,

Doors
Like windows, doors are important to
character and scale-givlng architectura'l
elencnts- They should a'lso be somewhat
transparent (on retail cormercial
facades) and consistent in detailing
nith windows and other facade elements.
Doors with glass contribute to overall
facade transparency. Due to thevisibility of people and merchandise
inside, windowed doors are somewhat
more effective in draw'ing peop'le insideto retal'l commercial facades. Although
gr:eat variations exist, 25-30% t
transparency is felt to be a ninimum
transparency objective. Private
residences, lodges, restaurants, and
other non-retail establishments have
different visibi,l ity and character
needs, and doors shou'l d be designed
accordingly. Sidelight windows are
also a means of introducing door-
transparency as q complement or sub-stitute for door windows.
