The Town of Vail Fire Department has enacted asbestos testing and abatement requirements.
According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Environmental
Protection Agency's Regulation No.8, Section lll - Project Requirements Part 8., asbestos testing and
abatement shall be performed, when the situations listed below are expected to occur.
The structures/components to be disturbed must be inspected for asbestos by a state-certified asbestos
inspector. lf the amount of asbestos-containing material to be disturbed exceeds the following trigger
levels then an abatement contractor must remove the material.
Trigger Levels means amounts of material as follows:
With regard to single-family residential dwellings, the trigger levels are 50 linear feet on
pipes, 32 square feet on all other surfaces, or the volume equivalent of a S5gallon drum.
With regard to all areas other than a single-family residential dwellings, the trigger levels
are 260 linear feet on pipes, 160 square feet on other surfaces, or the volume equivalent of
a 55gallon drum.
AN ASBESTOS TEST AND REPORT IS REQUIRED TO BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR BUILDING
PERMIT APPLICATION FOR ALL REMODEL, ADDITION OR OTHER PROJECTS INVOLVING ANY
DEMOLITION OR REMOVAL OF BUILDING MATERIALS THAT MAY CONTAIN ASBESTOS.
A COPY OF THE REPORT MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATION
