Specializing on Trec Servlce and Forestry Consufting August 4, 2005 Greg Banie 75 S. Frontage Road. Vail, CO 81657 RE: Trees on the Donovan Park Bike path. Dear Greg, Thanks you for contacting A cut Above Forestry to address your tree care needs. Asyou requested in our August 3, 2005 site meeting, I inspected and evaluated large 1i.T"J9, lodgepole pine tree (Pinus contorta) located near the edge of the DonJvan Park Bike Path near the Cascade Club. During our meeting you expressed concem about the impact a future re.construction of lhe bike path may have on the trees. You asked me to determine if the tree has health orsffttclural problems that would leave it vulnerable to construction stress or potential failure. The tree is a 23.0-inch diameter, 80-foot tall lodgepole pine tree. lt is located behind the Cascade Glub on the south side of the bike path near Gore Creek. I visually inspec{ed the tree for signs of damage or defect. I also tested the tree for rot using the "hammer tesf . The hammer test simply involves hitting the tree with a hammer and listening for a solid or hollow sound. This tree produced a hollow sound when hit with a hammer and further investigation uncovered a large pocket of stem rot on the east side of the tee. I recommend removing this tree as soon as possible to reduce the chance of injury to penions or property damage. Please contaci me with any questions at 970-45$g154. Dear Greg, Thanks you br contacting A Gut Above Forestry to address your tree care needs. As you requested in our June 16 site meeting, I inspec{ed and evaluated two large diameter spruce trees located near the edge of the Donavan Park Bike Path. During our meeting you elpressed conoem aboutthe impact a frrture re- construction of the bike path may have on these two trees. You asked me to determine if either tree had heatth or structural problems that would leave it vulnerable to construction stress or potentialhilure. Tree #1 is a Golorado spruce (Picea pungens).located on the south side of the bike path near Gore Creek. The north %ot the root zone uras graded and paved over in the 1970's when the original path was built. Tree #2is a Colorado spruce located on the north side of the path. Some of tree #2 root zone was likely affected during the originalconstruc'tion of the path. The folloring tiable summarizes the specifications of both trees. re€ Tree #Specie Diameter lnches Height Feet Grown Ratio Crown Spread eastfilvest Grown Spread northlsouth 1 Pipu 31.5 90 80 31 34 2 PiPu 26.0 90 75 29 32 Crown ratio is the perent of tre trunk that supports live foliage. This number is important because the green foliage is the only food producing material on the tree trees with a higher percent of green foliage are rnore likely to survive the P.O. Box 7133 Breckenridge 970-453€1s4 Eagle Gounty 970-926-9243 stress caused during construction. Crown spread is distance across the crown from the branch to branch. I inspected both trees visually for health and condition and checked them for soundness with a "hammer test". The hammer test consists of hitting the trunk with a mallet and listening for a hollow sound. I also extracted a core sample from each tree using an increment bore to visually test for stem rot. Tree #1 is in good condition with the only concern being the root damage caused when the bike path was built in the 1970's. When hit with a hammer, the tree gave a hollow sound on the south side. I extracted a sample core from the south side of the tree and found no rot. Photo 1: The immediate concern for tree #2 is the severity of stem rot present in the trunk. The tree gave off a hollow sound when hit with a hatchet. I extracted a core from the south side of the tree and found only 3-inches of sound wood. Photo 2r Only 3-inches of sound wood is present in the lower trunk of tree #2. The small amount of sound wood leaves this tree susceptible to stem failure in seasonal winds, snow or the effects of gravity. Since this tree is located near a heavily used bike path, I recommend removing the tree as soon as possible to minimize the risk to persons and property. Please contact me with any questions at 970453-9154. Only 3-inches of sound wood is present in the lower trunk of tree :itl| Certified Arborist RM-21 95
