Subject: Observation of Excavatian, Proposed Addition to Resideace, Lot 1 l,

Dear Matt:
As requested,a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
excavation at the subject site on September 25,2015 to evaluate the soils exposed for
foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the
foundation design are presented in this report. The services were performed in
accordance with our agreement for professional engineering services to Kienzle
Construction,dated September 24,2015.
The existirtg residence has a basement level. The addition wili be attached to the
northwest corner of the existing residence. The addition will be a 1 yx story wood frame
structure over a basement level. The basement floor will be slab-on-grade. The addition
has been designeci to be supported on spread footings assuming an allowable soil bearing
pressure of 1,500 psf.
At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in one leve!
from about 4 to 4y:feet below the adjace�t ground surface. The soils exposed in the
battom of the excavation consisteci of inedium dense,silty sand. Results of sweli-
consolidation testing performed on samples taken from the site,showa on Figure 1,
indicate the soils are moderately to highly compressible under conditions af loading and
wetting. The sample may have been partly disturbed due to the sandy nature of the soils.
No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were moist.
We understand the existing residence is founded an the compressible silty sand soils.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
canstruction,spread footings pfaced on the undisturbed natural soil designed for an
allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf can be used for support r�f the proposed addition
with some risk of settlement. The risk of settlement is due primarily to compressible
nature o€the bearing soils. The settlement could be 1 to l�h inches and differential with
respect to the exisung structure which shouId be considered in the design. Extending the
foundation down to less compressible sails cauld be dane to reduce the setdement
patential.

Faotengs shoeald be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for
columns. AlI fill and any loose disturbed soils in footing areas should be removed and
the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils, and the subgrade
compacted. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soit cover above their
bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls shoutd be heavily
reinforced top and bottom to span tocal anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported
length of at least 12 feet. Foundatian walls acting as retaining structures should also be
designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unic weight of at
least SO pcf for on-site soil as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain shouid be proveded
to prevent temporary buildup af hydrastatic pressure behind the basement walls and
prevent wetting of the lower level. SUUCtural fill placed within floar slab areas can
cansist of the on-site soils campacted to at least 95°k of standard Proctor density (SPD) at
a moisture content near optimum. Backfill placed araund the structure should be
corrrpacted to at least 90�Yo SPD and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least
1Q feet of the building. Landscape that requires regular heavy irrigation, such as sod, and
sprinkler heads should not be located within 5 fect of the foundation.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation and do nat include subsurface exploration to
evaluate the subs�rface conditions within the Ioaded depth af foundatian influence. This
study is based on the assumption Ehat soils beneath the foatings have equal or better
support than those exposed. The risk of foundatian movement may be greater than
indicated in this report becaase of possible variations in the subsurfacc conditions. In
order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions belaw the
excavation,drilling would be required. It is possihle the data obtained by subsurface
explaration conld change t�e recommendations contained in this Ietter. Our services do
not include determining the presence,prevention ar possibility of mold or other biologic�l
contaminants(MOBC)developing in the future. If the client is concemed about MOBC,
then a profession�l in this special fieId of practice should be consulted.
