SUBJECT: Sebastian Penthouse Grease Duct Inspection
Work Summary: On 10-27-15 at the request of Haselden Construction, myself and Tony Haschke
from SGM Inc. visited the Sebastian Penthouse Project at 16 Vail Rd, Vail CO. The purpose of the
visit was to inspect the weld joints on three (3) grease duct extensions that were added to the existing
grease ducts serving the kitchen hood located at the lower level of the hotel. The grease ducts and
shaft extension were required due to the ongoing construction of the Penthouse. At the time of the
inspection, the extensions had been installed and field welded approximately 3" above the existing
(old) roof cap. The shaft extension had not been installed.
Methodology and Results: The three grease duct welds were inspected using a light test. An 800
lumen LED work lamp was lowered into the duct to the level of the weld, A black plastic tent was
installed on the outside of the ducts, creating a completely dark environment and the test lamp was
rotated inside the duct several times each to expose any voids in the welds. Mr. Haschke and I
observed the weld joints for several minute each to identify any voids in the joint. We observed one
(1) pinhole leak on the west side of the eastern most duct (Figure 1). The hole was marked and later
repaired with a weld (figure 2). The hole was easily observable in the dark environment and we are
confident that the welds on all three ducts were installed liquid tight as per the provisions of the IMC
Comments:
The grease ducts extending through the penthouse need to be installed in a fire rated chase as per the
requirements of IMG506. Given the potential heat generation from the ducts we recommend
insulation of the ducts using a fire rated duct wrap such as 3M Fire Barrier Grease Duct Wrap to
prevent localized overheating in the occupied space
