Subject: Findings of Exploratory Drilling, Proposed Residence Additions, Lot 35,
Block 7, Vail Village 1st Filing, 100 Vail Road, Vail, Colorado
Gentlemen:
As requested, Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. performed exploratory drilling at the
subject site to assess foundation bearing and excavation conditions. The services were
performed in accordance with our agreement for professional engineering services to
Nedbo Construction, dated May 14, 2014.
Two exploratory borings were drilled in the eastern part of the lot. Boring 1 was drilled
on the access drive about 15 feet east of the concrete deck and Boring 2 was drilled inside
the building about 15 feet west of the east exterior wall. The borings were advanced with
6-inch diameter continuous flight auger to refusal then with diamond bit core drilling
method to the boring depths of 27 feet at Boring 1 and 29 feet at Boring 2. Boring 1
encountered about 15 feet of gravel and cobbles with boulders in a clayey sand matrix
above siltstone/sandstone bedrock with granitic intrusive rock layers. Boring 2
encountered about 11/2 feet of gravel fill above siltstone/sandstone bedrock with granitic
intrusive rock layers. The bedrock consists of the Minturn Formation which generally has
a moderate bedding dip down to the northwest.
Excavation depths will be about 20 to 25 feet below existing excavation grade or ground
surface. The new foundation has been designed for spread footing support imposing a
maximum allowable bearing pressure of 3,000 psf. The undisturbed bedrock is suitable
for the foundation support with likely considerable more bearing capacity than assumed.
The excavation on the downhill side may be based in the granular overburden soils and is
expected to have a bearing capacity of 3,000 psf which can be further evaluated at the
time of excavation.
We will present our completed findings in the project report. In the meantime, if you
have any questions, please call our office.
Sincerely,
HEPWORTH—PAWLAK AL, INC.
