Subject: Observation of Boulder Retaining Wall Construction, Proposed Duplex
Residence, Lot 2, Bighorn Estates, 4288 Nugget Lane, Vail, Colorado
Dear Bryan:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical observed the boulder
retaining wall construction at the subject site on a part-time basis on August 20 and 25,
2015. The purpose of our observations was to evaluate compliance with the wall design.
The findings of our observations are presented in this report. The services are
supplemental to our agreement to our proposal to Desmond Home Builders, dated May
14, 2014.
We designed the boulder site retaining walls behind the duplex and submitted our
recommendations in a letter dated May 20, 2015 under the above job number. The design
consists of a two tier wall with individual wall heights of 6 feet maximum and a 2
(Horizontal) to 1 (Vertical) slope between the tiers. The design also shows the bottom
boulders of the individual tiers embedded a minimum 1 foot below grade and a drain
system and filter fabric behind the individual walls. The face of the walls were shown to
be battered back at 1/2(H) to 1 (V).
We observed the foundation excavation for the walls to be cut into natural soils. No free
water was observed in the excavation. We observed the boulder wall construction to be
per our recommended detail plans and as designed. On-site subangular to angular
boulders from the building excavation (to several feet in diameter) were used with the
larger boulders placed at the bottoms of the walls.
