x EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL: SHOULD THE EXCAVATION FOR THE PLACEMENT OF THE
LEVELING PAD EXPOSE AN UNSATISFACTORY BEARING MATERIAL, THE WALL ENGINEER MAY
REQUIRE REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF THAT MATERIAL. THE REMOVED MATERIAL SHALL
BE REPLACED WITH MATERIAL MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIED BY THE WALL
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER COMPACTED IN CONFORMANCE WITH COMPACTION REQUIREMENTS
SPECIFIED BY THE WALL GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER.
x MOISTURE CONTROL OF BACKFILL: UNIFORMLY MOISTEN OR AERATE SUBGRADE AND EACH
SUBSEQUENT BACKFILL LAYER BEFORE COMPACTION TO WITHIN 2 PERCENT OF OPTIMUM
MOISTURE CONTENT.
x COMPACTION: EACH LAYER OF BACKFILL SHALL NOT EXCEED 8" BEFORE COMPACTING TO THE
REQUIRED DENSITY AND BEFORE SUCCESSIVE LAYERS ARE PLACED. AT LEAST 6" OF MATERIAL
SHALL BE IN PLACE PRIOR TO OPERATION OF TRACKED VEHICLES OVER THE SOIL
REINFORCEMENT. ONLY HAND-OPERATED COMPACTION EQUIPMENT SHALL BE ALLOWED
WITHIN 3' OF THE FRONT OF THE WALL FACE.
O THE FILL AND COMPACTION OPERATION SHALL PROGRESS FROM THE FACE TOWARD THE
BACK WORKING PARALLEL TO THE WALL FACE.
O THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PLACE ADDITIONAL BLOCKS AND FILL MATERIAL, PROPERLY
COMPACTED, TO RETURN THE FINISHED GRADE TO PLAN ELEVATIONS IF SETTLEMENT
HAS OCCURRED.
O COMPACT SOILS LEVELING PAD AND EACH LAYER OF BACKFILL (BOTH REINFORCED
BACKFILL AND RETAINED BACKFILL) TO A MINIMUM OF 95 PERCENT OF THE MAXIMUM
STANDARD PROCTOR DENSITY IN ACCORDANCE WITH AASHTO T-99 OR ASTM D698 AT
MOISTURE CONTENT WITHIN 2 PERCENT OF OPTIMUM.
x REINFORCEMENT: THE REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE LAID TO WITHIN 1" FROM THE FRONT FACE
OF BLOCK.
x LEVELING PAD: THE LEVELING PAD SHALL BE PLACED TO BE LEVEL TO WITHIN 1/4 INCH IN 10
FEET.
x BLOCK FACING: AN OVERALL NEGATIVE BATTER (WALL FACE LEANING OUTWARD) BETWEEN
BOTTOM AND TOP OF WALL IS NOT ALLOWED. THE FINAL WALL FACE SHALL HAVE A POSITIVE
BATTER AS SHOWN ON THE CONTRACT PLANS AND IN NO CASE SHALL THE BATTER VARY
MORE THAN 1.5%. THE SURFACE OF WALL FACE SHALL BE TESTED WITH A 10' STRAIGHTEDGE
LAID ALONG THE SURFACE IN ALL DIRECTIONS. EXCEPT AS NECESSARY FOR HORIZONTAL
ALIGNMENT OF THE WALL, CONVEX DEVIATION OF THE WALL FACE FROM THE STRAIGHTEDGE
(BELLY WALL) SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED, AND CONCAVE DEVIATION FROM THE STRAIGHTEDGE
SHALL BE LESS THAN ½".
x PROTECTION: PREVENT DAMAGE TO WALL AND EARTHWORK BY SUBSEQUENT CONSTRUCTION
AND UNCONTROLLED RUNOFF UNTIL SUBSTANTIAL COMPLETION. AT COMPLETION OF WALL
CONSTRUCTION, IF OTHER WORK SUCH AS FINISH GRADING, PAVING, LANDSCAPING, OR STORM
DRAINAGE ADJACENT TO THE WALL IS NOT TO BE INSTALLED IMMEDIATELY, GRADE THE TOP
OF BACKFILL AND PROVIDE TEMPORARY DRAINAGE AS REQUIRED TO PREVENT WATER RUNOFF
TOWARD THE WALL.
x UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, ALL BLOCKS SHALL BE DRY STACKED AND PLACED WITH EACH
BLOCK SPANNING THE JOINT IN THE ROW BELOW (RUNNING BOND). THE CAP BLOCK AND THE
TOP TWO COURSES OF FULL SIZE BLOCK SHALL BE ATTACHED TO THE COURSES BELOW USING
A MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED ADHESIVE.
x DISPOSAL: CONTRACTOR SHALL REMOVE SURPLUS WALL MATERIALS, INCLUDING BROKEN OR
REJECTED BLOCKS, GEOGRID WASTE, TRASH, AND OTHER DEBRIS, AND LEGALLY DISPOSE OF IT
OFF THE OWNER'S PROPERTY.
ALL WORK SHALL CONFORM TO ACI 301-96. ALL STRUCTURAL CONCRETE TO BE FROM TYPE 1
PORTLAND CEMENT. STORE AGGREGATE, AND DEVELOP 3000 PSI MINIMUM COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
AT 28 DAYS. SLAB-ON-GRADE SHALL DEVELOP 3000 PSI MINIMUM COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AT 20
DAYS. SLUMP OF CONCRETE SHALL NOT EXCEED 4" UNLESS A HIGH RANGE WATER-REDUCING
ADMIXTURE IS USED. THE SLUMP OF CONCRETE PRIOR TO ADDITION OF A HIGH RANGE WATER-
REDUCING ADMIXTURE SHALL NOT EXCEED 4". THE SLUMP OF CONCRETE CONTAINING A HIGH
RANGE WATER-REDUCING ADMIXTURE SHALL NOT EXCEED 10". AIR CONTENT SHALL BE BETWEEN 5
AND 7 PERCENT. NO HORIZONTAL CONSTRUCTION JOINTS SHALL BE MADE IN SLABS OR BEAMS.
ALL CONCRETE SLABS-ON-GRADE TO HAVE CONTROL JOINTS NO GREATER THAN 12 FEET. THE
OWNER IS HEREBY MADE AWARE OF THE CHANGE OF MOVEMENT AND CRACKING OF SLABS PLACED ON
COMPACTED FILL OF NATIVE SOILS. THE RISKS OF SWELLING SOILS AND RESULTING
HEAVING/CRACKING OF CONCRETE CAN BE MINIMIZED BUT NOT ELIMINATED WITH CAREFUL
CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES.
PROVIDE A 3/4" CHAMBER AT ALL EXPOSED EDGES OF CONCRETE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ACI 301
SECTION 4.2.4 UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE. AVOID CUTTING EXISTING REBAR WHEN DRILLING
HOLES IN FORMED CONCRETE.
ALL REINFORCING STEEL SHALL BE ASTM A615, GRADE 60 AND HAVE A MINIMUM OF 60,000 PSI
YIELD STRENGTH. LAP SPLICES, WHERE PERMITTED BY THE ENGINEER, SHALL BE A MINIMUM OF
74 BAR DIAMETERS. WHERE PERMITTED, SPLICES MAY BE CLASS B CONTACT SPLICES.
REINFORCEMENT TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING COVER:
UNIFORMED SURFACE IN CONTACT WITH THE EARTH 3 IN.
FORMED SURFACES EXPOSED TO EARTH OR WEATHER 1-1/2 IN.
REINFORCING PLACING TOLERANCES: PER IBC 2003.
DETAIL BARS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LATEST EDITIONS OF "ACI DETAILING MANUAL",
PUBLICATION SP-66, AND "BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE", ACI 318.
PROVIDE ACCESSORIES NECESSARY TO PROPERLY SUPPORT REINFORCING AT POSITIONS SHOWN ON
PLANS. ALL DOWELS, BOLTS AND EMBEDDED PLATES SHALL BE SET AND TIED IN PLACE BEFORE
THE CONCRETE IS POURED. "STABBING" DOWELS, BOLTS OR PLATES INTO PREVIOUSLY PLACED
CONCRETE IS NOT PERMITTED.
x LEVELING PAD: THE LEVELING PAD SHALL BE CONSTRUCTED OF CONCRETE AND SHALL BEAR
NATIVE MATERIAL. THE SOILS BELOW THE LEVELING FOOTING ARE TO BE OBSERVED AND
APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO PLACEMENT OF THE FOOTING.

ASTM D2487 AND THE USCS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM. THE PLASTICITY OF THE FINE
FRACTION OF THE REINFORCED SOIL SHALL BE LESS THAN 20. REINFORCED BACKFILL
MATERIAL SHALL BE TESTED BY A GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER REGISTERED IN THE STATE
OF COLORADO.
x PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: AT THE TIME OF DELIVERY TO THE WORK SITE, THE UNITS SHALL
CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
O EITHER A FULL BLOCK OR A SAW CUT COUPON COMPRESSIVE TEST IS ACCEPTABLE TO
VERIFY THE 28-DAY CONCRETE STRENGTH. THE LOCATION OF CUT FOR THE COUPON
SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE OWNER'S ENGINEER.
O THE AVERAGE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THREE (3) TESTS SHALL BE EQUAL OR
GREATER THAN 4,500 PSI WITH THE MINIMUM OF 4,000 PSI FOR INDIVIDUAL TEST IN
ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM C140 SECTIONS 6, 8 AND 9.
O THE MINIMUM OVEN DRY WEIGHT OF CONCRETE BLOCK SHALL BE 125 PCF WITH A
MAXIMUM WATER ABSORPTION RATE BY WEIGHT OF 6 PERCENT DETERMINED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENT OF ASTM C 140.
O THE BLOCK WEIGHT (EXCLUDING CORE FILL) SHALL BE A MINIMUM OF 72 LBS. PER
SQUARE FOOT OF WALL FACE.
x FINISH AND APPEARANCE: ALL UNITS SHALL BE IN GOOD CONDITION. CRACKS, CHIPS AND/OR
OTHER IMPERFECTIONS MAY BE CAUSE FOR REJECTION, AS DETERMINED BY THE OWNER'S
ENGINEER.
O ARCHITECTURAL TREATMENT SHALL MEET THE REQUIREMENTS SHOWN ON THE PLANS.
O THE PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS IN THE EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS OF THE CONCRETE BLOCK
SHALL NOT DIFFER MORE THAN ± 1/8", EXCEPT THE HEIGHT OF THE BLOCK SHALL BE
WITHIN ± 1/16" FROM THE SPECIFIED DIMENSIONS FOR AN INDIVIDUAL BLOCK. THE
MINIMUM THICKNESS OF ANY WALLS OR WEBS WITHIN THE BLOCK SHALL BE ON
AVERAGE 3" AT THE FACE AND 2" AT STEM AND BACK.
x GEOSYNTHETIC SOIL REINFORCEMENT: SOIL REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE A GEOGRID OF HIGH-
DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE) EXPANDED SHEET OR POLYESTER WOVEN FIBER MATERIALS,
SPECIFICALLY FABRICATED FOR USE AS SOIL REINFORCEMENT.
