In the early years of Vail, landscape companies planted trees and shrubs in high densities with large numbers of fast-
growing plants in order to create a lush, green and attractive landscape quickly. A mature and well-structured landscape
takes significantly longer to develop and requires regular and continuing management.
As trees in the newer woodlands and landscapes grow, they need more and more space to develop good crowns and
stable root systems. A few years after high-density planting, there is inadequate light and space for all of the trees, so a
number must be reduced by the process of 'thinning'.
If thinning is not done, the trees become thin and spindly; no crown or root development can take place; and eventually
the stand kills itself.
As we have observed, planted areas became highly established in a short 20 years. Now these areas are 10 years late in
terms of proper management, and need to be thinned to create a healthy and sustainable environment. In the case of
Vail Golfcourse Townhomes, we have no significant shrub growth and the trees are shading the ground to the point that
the turf can't grow. Not to mention the trees are heavily infested by pests. They are fighting over the available nutrients
and no one tree is much healthier then the next. With a proper tree care plan we can get the beneficial trees to be less
sickly.
A traditional approach to woodland management is needed to develop and manage healthy woodlands. I am proposing
we implement a system which creates a visually diverse and healthy landscape comprising widely spaced trees of
varying ages and height with a shrub layer of variety and color underneath. We need to thin these areas out over time to
create a more positive growing environment for years to come. The current goal for this association is to thin out some
of the existing trees along the berms. To not only grow more turf and beautify there entries but to create a better living
environment by thinning the tree stands and promoting more spacious growth patterns.
Please except this letter as a recommendation to beautify this wonderful townhome community.
