Value of ‘‘a’’: a) For h ≤60 ft (18 m), ‘‘a’’ is the smaller of 0.1 times the building lesser plan dimension or 0.4 times h, and never less than 4% of the least horizontal dimension, or 3 ft (0.9 m). Zone 3 is a square with dimensions ‘‘a’’. b) Forh>60ft(18m),‘‘a’’is0.1times the building lesser plan dimension, but not less than 3 ft (0.9 m). Zone 3 is an ell with dimensions ‘‘2a’’. 8. Value of ‘‘h’’: a) For slopes ≤7°, h = eave height b) For slopes > 7°, h = mean roof height 9. Value of ‘‘w’’ is based on the lesser plan dimension. 1-28 Wind Design Page 10 FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets ©2007 Factory Mutual Insurance Company. For other situations, see the respective tables in this document. 2.3 Wall, Door, and Window Design Design wall panels, doors, windows and their securement to guidelines in this section. Where the effective wind area of a door or window considerably exceeds 10 ft 2 (1 m 2), or 20 ft 2 (2 m 2), for walls over 60 ft or 18 m high, pressures may be reduced in accordance with ASCE 7 to reflect the larger area only. Use impact-resistant glazing or glazing protection, and impact-resistant dock doors rated for small or large missile exposure (as applicable) when located within a windborne debris region (seeAppendixA). Ensure they are satisfactorily tested per Florida Building Code Testing Application Standards (TAS) 201, 202, and 203, or ASTM Standards E1886 and E1996. Some manufacturers of window films are FM Approved (see the Approval Guide Building Materials Volume, Windstorm Resistant Fenestration) for small missile resistance for application on the interior surface of existing windows.Regardless of what design level from Table 1 is chosen, use the basic wind speed map and Appendix A to determine the need for fenestration protection. Determine basic wind speed and Surface Roughness Exposure in accordance with Sections 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 of this data sheet. When significant hills, ridges, or escarpments are present, refer to Section 2.2.4. For wind tunnel testing, refer to Section 2.2.5. The following provides an overview of the methodology to determine inward and outward wall design pressures. 2.3.1 Outward Wall Pressure for Enclosed Building •Determine outward pressure for wall Zone 4 and Θ≤10˚using Tables 9, 10, or 11. •Determine outward pressure for wall Zones 4 and 5 various Θ by applying multipliers in Table 12.
